How to not look middle aged

Justtakeatowel · 17/06/2020 19:30

I've seen a few pictures of my recently and I look frumpy. I don't mind looking my age (mid 40s) but I just look uurgh.

I've started curly girl and I think curly hair ages me loads! Where do I need to buy from to make myself a bit more with it? I've a tendency to buy cheap supermarket stuff which I think isn't always cut the best and I'm willing to spend a bit more.

I'm 5 ft 7 and 9 stone 9 if that makes a difference but a definite apple and have a bit of a belly which I think adds to the frumpiness

Thanks!

@tomhardyfan

How long til you saw a difference?
I always thought collagen benefits were a myth

Zaphodsotherhead · 25/06/2020 15:22

I can't wear a bob. I've got a little round face and, with a bob, I look like a hamster in a wig. Very very short hair is the only thing that works for me (besides, I'm a dead ringer for my dad, so hair doesn't suit me at all).

Pikachubaby · 25/06/2020 15:40

@tomhardyfan , pork sausages contain lots of collagen (the cheaper, the more collagen)

It’s what Nigella credits her plump skin to Grin

tomhardyfan · 25/06/2020 15:59

It's true the best collagen is from boiled beef bones and pork bones.
I would say months before I noticed a difference I've also been generally eating healthier which helps but I feel great I really do but I know lots of people think it's just a farce which is fair 🤣 each to there own.

woodhill · 25/06/2020 17:26

Remember Priscilla Presley on the one show

Sunnydays123456 · 25/06/2020 17:37

@tomhardyfan ah yes collagen - I have collagen and maca powder in my smoothie every day and also make bone broth a lot

ficklemissfickle · 25/06/2020 18:54

Read through it all & finding it all really interesting. Not wanting to hijack but in similar situation - late 40's, slim 5'6" & totally lost my way style wise, not sure ever got it quite right to be fair. 99% wardrobe from Next as easy to buy online. No confidence in knowing what looks good, office/clinical job but life outside of work very casual & spend fair amount of time outdoors. Like style of Jennifer Anniston type, not fluffy or flouncy. Live in leggings, skinny jeans, trainers & tshirt/hoodies 😖Have a v limited budget of £80-100 per month & be interested to know what I should prioritise in regards to purchases?

Zara 3/4 half elastic waist trousers, maxi dress especially ones with thin pleats falling from under bust. New look has nice satin one last season or marks and Spencer, get a couple of ted baker tops with bit of detailing on, ask the ted baker staff to help you. Mint velvet Reiss amd Karen Millen. Get to know your size in these shops then eBay amd depop,
Pilates body balance and yoga at this age to pull your posture back into shape.
Consider limiting pasta and bread in your diet that might be bloating you up and swop for brown rice and porridge
I’m sure you
don’t need Botox just head to boots or mac counters benefit makeup and ask fir make over to get some decent products. Free from MAC when buy 2 products think
Amd best thing I ever did recently being similar age is get your colours done, that spring summer autumn winter shades, and stick to the book of vomit they give you. It really works. Kate Middleton excellebt example of winter but I think you may be autumn.
It will cost you more but better quality does last. Buy less and take advantage of sales.

Purpl · 25/06/2020 21:37

Book of vomit 🤮 😂 book of Swatch colour samples sorry !!!
Good luck you’ll feel amazing with small changes,
Bin the primark has supermarket clothes if they not in your wardrobe you can’t wear them

Purpl · 25/06/2020 21:39

And Joni jeans topshop are brillant for apple shape and do different leg length

Pikachubaby · 25/06/2020 21:48

Purpl... book of vomit Grin

To me elasticated trousers always look bad from behind, on anyone, even the young. Greet big unstructured flabbering bottom... even on slim women

Elasticated waists are a big no no imo

woodhill · 25/06/2020 22:01

Mind you tummies bulging over waist bands aren't great either and if you go up a size they are too big

Littlepurpleflower · 25/06/2020 22:08

You can get powdered collagen from Amazon.

Mawbags · 25/06/2020 22:17

@tomhardyfan

Sorry, didn’t mean to sound sceptical... I did actually order it!

Just didn’t know how it works

I need this help. This is a long thread to read though! I'm almost 42, about 1 1/2 stone overweight for my very short height. Currently hate all my clothes and feel I look bloody awful all the time. I paid for a make up consultation before lockdown which was just fantastic but cos then didnt leave the house for so long I cant remember any of it! Please please somewhere tell me where I can buy clothes. I keep looking online. I want some plain short sleeved dresses.

Happybint · 25/06/2020 22:29

And flattering summer footwear.

Cantdecidewhich · 26/06/2020 09:19

@Happybint yes I find footwear hard too!

@Happybint Have you had a look at Uniqlo? They have good plain dresses, quite classic.

Arket/Cos are more modern.

What’s your budget? What are your best bits?

Shoes wise I wear flip flops a lot in the summer, also Vans, converse, Stan Smiths. I know others seat by Birkenstock and Teva are cool again but I’m not into the dad sandal thing 😁

Cantdecidewhich · 26/06/2020 09:42

I have ordered the collagen thanks, fingers crossed it will help my skin

Happybint · 26/06/2020 13:26

Budget is maybe 40 pounds a dress? My best bits are boobs and legs. Got a big arse, thighs and stomach!!

WhatILoved · 26/06/2020 13:35

If anyone wants a referral code for bamboo clothing pm me

ShirleyPhallus · 26/06/2020 18:51

@PhoneLock

Do NOT lift heavy weights unless you are strict with macros as you will just look big and bulky and legs with be chunky

That really does depend on your genetics. I lift heavy weights and I'm not strict with anything. I don't think I could be described as big and bulky!

Absolutely agree, what complete bollocks that poster is talking. Heavy weights is THE BEST way to achieve this mythical “toning up” that people always talk about

It’s almost impossible for women to become too muscular, it takes a lot of effort to look “bulky”

wowfudge · 26/06/2020 19:26

I'm glad someone else thought that and posted! I now have muscle definition and no bingo wings. What's not to like?

Laiste · 26/06/2020 19:46

So i've ordered the Powdered Collagen from Amazon. It's coming tomorrow.

This bloody thread owes me 15 quid ! Grin

The reviews are fantastic (over a thousand of them). It seems the positive results reach from hair, nails and skin to joint and back pain. Fab!

But it takes about 2 months to kick in. So .... i can tell you what it tastes like tomorrow, but it'll be September before i can tell you if it works for me Grin

Littlepurpleflower · 26/06/2020 20:48

We the powdered collagen - I have the Great Lakes tub. Mix it with coffee and only use a teaspoon first then build up to a tablespoon. It tastes a bit creamy.
