Recommend me a non drying, non glossy red lipstick that stays put

I love a pop of red lipstick but being in my 50s don't want a glossy look. And I can't stand the drying effect some lipsticks have.

Can anyone recommend a red lipstick that's comfortable to wear and doesn't need reapplying every half hour.

Have a look at Lisa Eldridge’s lipsticks here... www.lisaeldridge.com/shop/beauty/ Velvet Ribbon is a lovely red, Velvet Morning is my favourite though it’s a red/orange.

The Maybelline superstay matte ink liquid lipsticks are really good, they stay put but don't have a horrible drying effect! I've never had good experiences with liquid lipsticks until my DH decided to pick this one up for me Grin

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 06/06/2020 21:34

Matte red lipstick is my specialist subject. I have both the Lisa Eldridge ones mentioned above, and love them both. I favour an orange red, and would recommend:

MAC Lady Danger
Laura Mercier Fire
Nara Lana
Hourglass Raven - this is a liquid
Nars Red Square - pencil/crayon

For more of a true red:

Besame Red Hot Red
Smashbox Bing

For a blue red:

Laura Mercier Dominate
Nars Rita
Nars Mysterious Red - pencil/crayon

Not red at all, but I also like Fenty Candy Venom, which is a fabulous hot pink.

Rimmel provocalips

Great response and a range of prices too. Will start working my way through them Smile

I second the maybeline one mentioned above. Pioneer is my favourite.
It's a bit of a bugger to get off but a decent layer of vaseline left on for a couple of minutes and a baby wipe does the job.

Revlon ultra HD matte mouse and ultra HD matte lipcolour are decent for the price too.

another vote for Maybelline superstay

Mac ruby woo is a lovely Matt

Marmaladegin · 06/06/2020 22:38

Yes but ruby woo is really drying. I have urban decay one in tryst and that shit goes nowhere all day

ITonyah · 06/06/2020 22:39

I'm 53 and i think a matt red lipstick is hugely aging.

If I go matt I go intense pink. Red is juicy tubes or paw paw lip balm

slipperyeel · 06/06/2020 22:41

Clarins joli rouge
Mac Russian red

TomNook · 06/06/2020 22:42

All long lasting ones dry. Maybelline lip things are good. The mac one is more drying.

TomNook · 06/06/2020 22:43

Plus your HUSBAND bought you a supermarket lipstick? Weird

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/06/2020 22:53

I like Ruby Woo, but it's very drying. I like Mac Chilli too.

Don't like pink lipsticks - too 80s.

violetbunny · 06/06/2020 23:07

I find MAC's lipsticks drying (along with most mattes really). NARS Audacious lipsticks and Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet formulas are both non-drying mattes that I've found after much trial and error, and both come in a few different shades of red.

Have you also tried using a lip primer OP? I always use the MAC lip primer under matte lipstick and it helps them feel less drying and keeps them in place longer. The trick is to apply it and let it set for a minute before applying lipstick. It's one of MAC's most underrated products in my opinion.

Everley · 06/06/2020 23:11

I find any long-wearing matte lipstick to be quite drying. I love Lime Crime Velvetine in Red Velvet but it can be drying. It lasts literally all day though.

Pat McGrath Labs MatteTrance lipstick is super long-wearing but I haven’t got a red so can’t recommend a specific shade.

Smashbox have a great product called Insta-Matte which makes lipstick matte and more long lasting. It’s fab.

EyeDrops · 06/06/2020 23:13

My favourite is No7 Moisture Drench in Soft Paprika. Lovely satin finish, not at all drying, and it 'wears off' well if that makes sense!

EyeDrops · 06/06/2020 23:17

Just to clarify, I mean it doesn't stay put in the sense that it's not long-lasting, but it wears off so gradually and naturally without leaving a horrible line that it doesn't matter if you don't reapply it for ages, it just looks great until you touch it up again.

arinah · 07/06/2020 07:43

@TomNook I was there, but couldn't decide on one more item for the 3 for 2 offer. He picked that lipstick purely for the colour.

AlexChitChatting · 07/06/2020 10:07

I have very dry lips. For a true red I do lip balm plus MAC Russian red or NARS cruella (which is a jumbo pencil) I wear both comfortably. Some cheaper ranges (e.g. MUA) also have some lovely true reds in a satin finish that stay on well.

wizzbangfizz · 07/06/2020 10:56

Shameless place mark

TheCanterburyWhales · 07/06/2020 11:02

Dior 99.
Various online beauty stores currently have a Dior Pump&Volume mascara (best in the world IMO) offer where you get a free rouge 99 together. Both for about £20.

Zebbert · 07/06/2020 15:19

Just to clarify, I'm wanting non glossy lipsticl which I don't necessarily see as matt which as pps have said can be drying and ageing.

I tried a lip primer years ago but found it drying but will consider the ones suggested - thanks all

The Maybelline Superstay is great. I have a lot of the ones mentioned above and they are dry and wear off within an hour on me. The colours might be good but I CBA reapplying all the time.

TomNook · 07/06/2020 19:12

The maybelline ones last overnight with me. Which is bloody unnerving
