Recommend me a non drying, non glossy red lipstick that stays put

I love a pop of red lipstick but being in my 50s don't want a glossy look. And I can't stand the drying effect some lipsticks have.

Can anyone recommend a red lipstick that's comfortable to wear and doesn't need reapplying every half hour.

Seconding Dior 999. Best red lipstick I own.

I've found that liquid lipsticks have more staying power than any other types. My favourite, non-drying ones are the Smashbox Always On range and Fenty Beauty range. I forget I even have lipstick on! Fenty's liquid lipstick in Stunna is a very popular red.

Glossier. Matte lipsticks. Poppy is an orangey red.

Charlotte Tilbury's Red carpet red (matte revolution formula) is my perfect red and I've tried them all. True red, not drying and surprisingly easy to carry off given it's colour.

I like 999 too. Lovely case too. Not sure it’s so long lasting

Hands down maybelline ink.

Lifeaback · 08/06/2020 10:10

Charlotte tilbury lipsticks are similar to what you’re after. They aren’t matte so aren’t drying, and are incredibly moisturising without being shiny (I’m sure there’s a word for it but I can’t think of how to describe it!)

I can’t comment on a particular shade of red as I don’t wear reds but I’ve got 4 shades from her collection and they’re all the same formula so I’d imagine the red one is too!

The NARS velvet lip crayons are great - don't move and not too drying

Bobbi Brown - Red Carpet, I'm 50 and always get compliments when I wear it, I don't find it drying either.

I've tried the Maybelline ink one and I can't get the darn stuff off!! Personally I found the sticky texture to be a bit off putting. My fav is Sleek Matte Me in Rioja Red - similar to Maybelline ink but slightly less thick.

Mac Russian Red is my favourite, it's not as drying as Ruby Woo. I normally use a lip balm under it and it's fine.

DancingFox · 10/06/2020 16:31

Zengarden Micellar water gets the Maybelline lip ink off in a flash.

Occasionally, if I've applied multiple layers/top ups to keep it looking perfect and it's sticking hard then a baby wipe or baby oil on a cotton pad would bring the rest off. But for everyday, micellar water (I use Garnier in the pink bottle) is great.

(I should say that another good thing about it is that you can layer/reapply it without it going bobbly unlike some similar brands of long lasting liquid lipstick, and I've tried lots!)

@Judystilldreamsofhorses - saw your comment with interest as I’m debating whether or not to get a Lisa Eldridge Velvet Morning as it looks so similar to Nars Red Square. Do you find them similar or both worth having? Thanks!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 21/10/2020 11:52

@horokania they are quite different. I find Red Square goes on a bit pinky, but Velvet Morning is much more orange. I need to layer up RS for dense colour, whereas VM is completely opaque. The packaging is really lovely too!

The Chanel liquid powder allure, Lovely range if colour and great finish.
