New Look. Not a brand I normally would go for. But should I?!

I’m morning the demise of Oasis and more importantly Warehouse where I have got lovely summer frocks in the past.

I don’t have the budget really for Hush or Jigsaw, especially not for summer frocks that get stained with ice cream/sun cream (I have young kids) and don’t last that well from one year to the next, however much I’m not into fast fashion.

I’m 43. I would have assumed New Look waaasy too young for me.

But I just had a look and they have some pretty dresses, obviously well priced.

Not all Polyester either which I had assumed they would be.

Should I take the plunge and try a couple of things or will they be just WRONG at my (not-very-advanced) age?!

I would say you can wear New Look etc at any age. HOWEVER I am not able to wear New Look due to them not allowing for boobs in the cut of their items 😂 So you're never to old, but you can't be too booby!

YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia · 03/06/2020 15:15

Oh I’m embarrassingly ill equipped in the department of boobage Grin so that may help!

I'm 55 and have been buying clothes from New Look since they came into existence. As I've got older there's less choice simply due to the styles keeping up with changing modern trends that aren't always suitable for the mature woman but still plenty of great outfits that I can choose from

DreamingofSunshine · 03/06/2020 15:22

I find they have the odd gem which fits into my wardrobe of oasis and warehouse. I like their tops and dresses. Quality isn't great and I sometimes have to size up though.

TiptopJ · 03/06/2020 15:27

It's one of those shops that's always worth a browse. The quality is hit and miss but for a cheap top or skirt I sometimes dont mind. They have a brand in there called apricot- I actually quite like it. It's more mature and the clothes are better quality.

RuffleCrow · 03/06/2020 15:30

If you have a mum-tum, i'd steer well clear. Last time i was in their changing rooms i was practically in tears by the time i came out. Everything was skimpy stretchy viscose and made me look about 6 months pregnant! What i wouldn't give for some affordable structured clothing to skim the right bits and accentuate the right bits!

Ploppymoodypants · 03/06/2020 15:33

Yep I’m 40 and have rediscovered them about 5 years ago when they had their shake up, having not shopped there since my teens. Definitely the odd gem to be found in there for sure. Also great for cheap work shoes, if you have to be smart but don’t want to spend money on something you don’t really like (I hate dressing in office wear).

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 03/06/2020 15:43

I am 55 and use New Look for some clothing and footwear
I also find H&M is often reasonable and bought some lovely bits in the January Sales from there.

ForeverRedSkinhead · 03/06/2020 15:49

Go for it op. I've got a few nice dresses and pairs of trousers from New look. I would say that I send back 50% of what I buy though , due to cut and/or quality.

I used to shop at Oasis too and while the quality is lower at NL I'd say that that's reflected in the price.

ForeverRedSkinhead · 03/06/2020 15:51

I'm 39 by the way.

ilovecherries · 03/06/2020 15:53

I’m 62 and have just bought two dresses from NL. I usually find a couple of things there I like every season. It’s never occurred to me I shouldn’t be in there. I do size up though - just one size usually. They do a lot of viscose now, which is a fabric I find quite comfy to wear, and I do tend to wash carefully.

YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia · 03/06/2020 16:05

Thanks everyone!

I like this one

Cotton and loose! Suits my style.

I’m usually a 10/12 so should I go for a 12 or a 14? Bearing in mind the style is a loose one.

Not very exciting, but sure it will look fine if you want to blend in.

onetiredmummy13 · 03/06/2020 16:11

My gran used to shop at new look in her 80s! Go for it if you like it! Oh and no she wasn't super trendy would just buy the odd tshirt or cardigan.

YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia · 03/06/2020 16:12

And this one.

www.newlook.com/uk/womens/clothing/dresses/summer-dresses/green-floral-empire-waist-midi-dress/p/656238939

I’m a sucker for emerald green and haven’t found anything much affordable elsewhere.

ihearttc · 03/06/2020 16:28

I’ve got that black smock dress (I’m 43 btw!). It gorgeous but big fitting. I’m a generous size 14 and I got a 12 (I had a winter version so I knew what size to get).

Terralee · 03/06/2020 16:35

My mum bought long summer dresses & skirts from there at the end of last summer. She's 71.

JaneJeffer · 03/06/2020 16:38

The sizing is all over the place. I think you need to buy in the shop.

Sparklyring · 03/06/2020 16:50

@YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia I love New Look and have 34F boobs and find their clothes fit well.

roff · 03/06/2020 16:55

Same I'm a 32H and never have an issue with boob fitting in NL!

Swiftier · 03/06/2020 17:14

I don’t think you should feel restricted to what shops you can buy from/what you can wear because of age. And in any case, even if you are concerned about that - the two dresses you linked to OP are very safe/bland and unlikely to be seen as ‘young’.

Aprilcherry04 · 03/06/2020 17:44

I love the green one. I was browsing last night and it caught my eye. I'm 52

Char1ey · 03/06/2020 18:01

Nothing wrong with New Look!
Peacocks and H&M are also worth looking at 🙂

simonthedog · 03/06/2020 18:04

I am 44. I have bought several things from New Look recently, they are all lovely.

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 03/06/2020 18:05

They’re very financially shaky so I personally wouldn’t place a big online order with them at the mo.
