10 Fragrances for Life

JMAngel1 · 04/05/2020 12:03

There's a popular Youtube video called the above and I thought it would be fun for us to list our all time favourite perfumes.
I was thinking about this as I was going through a memory and found an old diary from 10 years ago of my favourite perfumes and it hasn't changed much at all!
I also would love to read everyone's lists as with lockdown, I'm really missing smelling new fragrances in department stores - spring is usually a big launch time and I can easily lose an hour immersed in the fragrance halls! Instead I'll go down a Fragantica rabbit hole!!

So my !ist is as follows

  1. NR for her EDT - my absolute favourite. all year round
  2. D&G Light Blue Intense. S/S
  3. Tom Ford Neroli Portafino. S/S
  4. Chanel Chance. S/S
  5. Stella McCartney Stella. Summer
  6. Agent Provacateur Maitresse Spring
  7. Floral Street Ylang Ylang Espresso A/W
  8. Replica By the Fireplace A/W
  9. Gucci Rush A/W
10. Nina Ricci Bella S/S

A fragrance I'm dying to smell as it featured in so many of the YT videos is Marly Delina - does anyone have this and if so, do you think I would like it based on my list?

@JMAngel1 I loved quite a few of your original list! Gucci Rush - I made my bridesmaids wear it for my wedding day (I hadn’t heard the term ‘Bridezilla’ then) pity that I had a terrible cold and couldn’t smell a thing!

MyNameIsJane · 04/05/2020 19:49

New West! A blast from the past! Loved it!

AgentCooper · 04/05/2020 19:53

I love this thread Smile

  1. Diptyque - Fleur de Peau
  2. Vivienne Westwood - Boudoir only on special occasions. I used to wear it when DH and I were first going out and it takes me right back. I didn’t know it was discontinued Sad
  3. Diptyque - Volutes
  4. Diptyque - 34
  5. Annick Goutal - Eau d’Hadrien
  6. Nuxe - Parfum Prodigieux
  7. Roger et Gallet - Eau de Gingembre
  8. Diptyque - Oud Palao
  9. Miller Harris - La Fumée
10. Fragonard - Fleur d’oranger
Judystilldreamsofhorses · 04/05/2020 19:57

No particular order here:

Chanel 19
Byredo Bibliotheque
Miller Harris L’Air de Rien
Juliette Has A Gun Mad Madame
Heeley Sel Marin
Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady
Maison Margiela By the Fireplace
Guerlain Mitsouko
Diptyque Philosykos

I also don’t like much from 4160 Tuesdays, having sampled loads of them. The only one I like is What I Did On My Holidays.

Luckingfovely · 04/05/2020 20:00

Creed - Aventus For Her (so amazed it's only appeared once!)

Clean - Sueded Oud

EL - Bronze Goddess

Juliette - Not a Perfume

Molecule 01

4061 - have a big sample pack and can't decide which ones I like best!

Beauty Pie - Love, light and fresh for day time

And Clarins Eau Dynamisante for days when I want to bounce about like Tigger!

Butterbeaninjeans · 04/05/2020 20:06

Loving This thread, I'm rediscovering perfumes . IV seen CK obsession mentioned, I still love this, is it wrong to buy myself it? Is it too dated or timeless? 😁

TubereuseNordlys · 04/05/2020 20:12

Thanks so much @MisiaMisia - can't wait for the smell to take me back Smile

LimpLettice · 04/05/2020 20:15

Great thread!

Issey Miyake Le Feu. Missed for many years and nothing comes close.
CK Obsession will always be near the top of my list, I don't care how dated it gets
EL Amber Mystique
Hypnotic Poison
EL Youth Dew
Dana Tabu (cheap as chips but oh so me)
Ghost Deep Night
Tom Ford Shang Hai Lily
Kilian Amber Oud
Madonna Truth or Dare Blush

JMAngel1 · 04/05/2020 20:16

No, it's never dated if you love it. Obsession is timeless.
What I do with perfumes I love but smell a little too "full on 80s" (looking at you Red Door and Beautiful) is spray once into my hand to mix with unscented body lotion. The effect is diluted but I still get that nostalgic feel good hit.

Loving that posters are finding long lost scents fir each other.

Off to investigate sample packs from Bloom London.

@LimpLettice
Truth or Dare gets a lot of action on the YouTube 10 for life - nothing to be embarrassed about - I haven't smelt it yet.

Skybluepink123 · 04/05/2020 20:21

Love this thread, thanks op. Here’s my list, in no particular order.
Chanel - Gabrielle
Ralph Lauren - Woman
YSL - Paris
Guerlain - Air de Samsara
Marc Jacobs - Daisy and also Daisy oh so fresh
Chanel - Coco
Lancome - Tresor
Body Shop - White Musk and Ananya (teenage years)

Skybluepink123 · 04/05/2020 20:22

Does anyone remember Exclamation? Again, from my teenage years. ☺️

LimpLettice · 04/05/2020 20:24

It's one of the few full on florals I can manage, JMAngel1, probably because it starts out uber heavy and my skin eats fragrance for breakfast. Usually stupidly cheap, too!

mamakoukla · 04/05/2020 20:27

Hermes - Un jardin sur le Nil
Givenchy - Ysatis
Christian Dior - Dune
Salvador Dali - Laguna
Hermes - Eau de narcisse bleu
Bulgari - Eau de thé rouge
Chanel - Coco
Christian Dior - J’adore
Guerlain - Aqua allegoria Ylang et vanille
Molton Brown - Coastal cypress and sea fennel

LillianGish · 04/05/2020 20:29

Annick Goutal Eau d’Hadrien
Penhaligon Blasted Bloom
YSL Rive Gauche (my first perfume)
O de Lancôme (holiday scent)
Guerlain Shalimar (evenings only)
CK1 (smells of my youth)
Estée by Estée Lauder (the smell of Christmas)
Chanel No 5 (in all its variants)
Penhaligon Blenheim Bouquet (smell of my DH)
Clarins Eau Dynamisante (for when I’m not wearing any perfume)
Lovely thread - this is making me want to wander the perfume halls. Though I always come back to these ten.

VeniceBeach · 04/05/2020 20:42

Love this idea! We have two favourites in common, OP.

I’ve split my list into spring/summer and autumn winter.

S/S:
Nuxe - Prodigieux The ultimate scent of summer for me. And quite affordable!
L’Occitane - Thé Vert & Bigarde Fresh, green, garden scent. Sadly discontinued.
Chanel - Chance Eau Fraiche Floral citrus but quite heavy and long lasting. One for summer nights.
Estée Lauder - Bronze Goddess Beachy, sun cream smell. Truly love the scent however I can barely smell it after spraying so is expensive for what it is. Next - Summer Sun is a good likeness.

A/W
Liz Earle - Botanical Essence No.15 Spicy, comforting autumn scent. Seriously good.
Floral Street - Ylang Ylang Espresso Dark, slightly smoky, smells like actual flowers to me. Unique.
Tom Ford - Black Orchid Dark, rich, heavy. Sometimes too heavy!
Burberry - My Burberry The description of this was ‘like a London garden after rain’ and that’s what I always smell. Very good sillage and longevity, especially since you can find it well discounted.
Thierry Mugler - Angel A classic. Quite controversial!

TheCanterburyWhales · 04/05/2020 20:55

I have about 300 perfumes and collect vintage. But my desert island 10 perfumes for life would be:

  1. Chanel 19. My roommate at university wore it in 1984 and so did my roommate in Spain in 1986. So though it was other people's perfume, they were my memories, and I am never without a bottle. Currently wearing the EdP
  1. Anais Anais. I would never wear it brazenly now, it's too girly, but it's still my absolute comfort food perfume as it takes me back to the absolute happiest days of my life.
  1. Obsession. I first smelled this in its first ad in the middle of Cosmo April 1986. The blue ad which caused a storm as it appeared to be of a threesome. I was in Spain at the time and it took me another 6 months or so to actually get hold of a bottle. I have a vintage bottle now and it still blows my socks off. The new formulation (cheap and without the gold around the rim is a nasty minger in comparison to the real juice) There are a few boys, now very much men, who would immediately think of me if they smell it. Grin
  1. Ysatis. Moving into late 80s now.
  1. Dune early 90s.
  1. Miss Dior originale- not the nasty beribboned infiltrators. The slightly sleazy yet sophisticated old one.
  1. Dioressence - my Mum gave me a 10ml of this in 1982 and I felt very grown up. I have about 10 vintage bottles and must never run out because again, the new version is a travesty.
  1. Diorella. Sophisticated yet skanky. Shows real genius from a perfumer that they can do that.
  1. Givenchy III First grown up perfume I bought with my own money. On a flight. The woman next to me bought Fidji and she was terribly sophisticated but I only had money for a wee bottle of Giv III
  1. Toss up between Opium and Shalimar. Both my go-to winter scents.
TheCanterburyWhales · 04/05/2020 20:56

Shit! Forgot Rive Gauche . Cancel Opium/Shalimar and add that.

DKanin · 04/05/2020 20:57

Great thread OP!

Mine are;

In a league of its own;

  1. Dior Pure poison
  1. Hermes - kelly caleche
  2. Dior - Miss Dior
  3. Chanel - coco mademoiselle
  4. Hermes - Twilly
  5. Chanel - Paris - Venise
  6. Estée Lauder - beyond paradise
  7. Gucci - Rush
  8. Pacco Rabanne - XS
10. Armani - Code
Onynx · 04/05/2020 21:03

Loving this! Does anybody else keep the perfume bottles when they are empty? So many of mine are associated with different memories. My first solid/wax perfume was Nina by Nina Ricci back in the early 90's- it was discontinued at some point and brought back smelling nothing like the original. Ralph Lauren Romance I net for the first time travelling through Montreal in Canada & it will always remind me of that time. EL Knowing - always associate it with travel too for some reason Smile

Butterbeaninjeans · 04/05/2020 21:08

Woohoo off to buy obsession 😁

DKanin · 04/05/2020 21:14

I used to get all my perfumes from allbeauty as they had great discounts but they don't seem to stock such a variety any more - can anyone recommend anywhere good to get perfumes at good prices nowadays? Thank you!

aneliese · 04/05/2020 21:14

Love this thread! I can smell them as I read and it's lovely nostalgia.

In no particular order:

CK One - my first ever perfume
Chanel Coco Noir
Diptyque Do Son
Liz Earle No 15
Molecule No 1
Chanel Coco - reminds me of my Mother
Chanel Chance
Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir
D&G The One
Body Shop White Musk - never worn it just reminds me of my childhood
