10 Fragrances for Life

JMAngel1 · 04/05/2020 12:03

There's a popular Youtube video called the above and I thought it would be fun for us to list our all time favourite perfumes.
I was thinking about this as I was going through a memory and found an old diary from 10 years ago of my favourite perfumes and it hasn't changed much at all!
I also would love to read everyone's lists as with lockdown, I'm really missing smelling new fragrances in department stores - spring is usually a big launch time and I can easily lose an hour immersed in the fragrance halls! Instead I'll go down a Fragantica rabbit hole!!

So my !ist is as follows

  1. NR for her EDT - my absolute favourite. all year round
  2. D&G Light Blue Intense. S/S
  3. Tom Ford Neroli Portafino. S/S
  4. Chanel Chance. S/S
  5. Stella McCartney Stella. Summer
  6. Agent Provacateur Maitresse Spring
  7. Floral Street Ylang Ylang Espresso A/W
  8. Replica By the Fireplace A/W
  9. Gucci Rush A/W
10. Nina Ricci Bella S/S

A fragrance I'm dying to smell as it featured in so many of the YT videos is Marly Delina - does anyone have this and if so, do you think I would like it based on my list?

When you all get PP dupes, do you vwet the oil rollerballs or the sprays? Are the oils more true to original?

OP posts:
Richlyfruited · 18/05/2020 17:34

I've had both. Not sure if oils are more true to the original but found the Jo Malone rollerball dupes I bought were great and long lasting compared to the original. I tried Pomegranate Noir and Blue Agave (now discontinued)

Have lots of the sprays and some are closer to the original than others. I buy dupes of my regular perfumes to take into work so I can respray!

Greenpop21 · 18/05/2020 17:40

I’ve had both the spray and roll-on oil for Gucci Envy copy and the oil is truer to the scent and lasts forever but you don’t get that big hit like that a spray gives. They do recommend the oils as they are true with no alcohol added.

Greenpop21 · 18/05/2020 17:42

Sorry that sounds rubbish. What I mean is, I like to walk into a mist of fragrance and miss that with oils. I do what they recommend- rub lots into your hand and run it through your hair .

TheCanterburyWhales · 18/05/2020 18:42

Jo Malones are colognes (mainly water) which is why they hardly last. The PPs are oil based so last much longer. I don't like the rollerballs personally as I find them a bit scratchy on the skin but the sprays are still oil based so long lasting iyswim.

Another plus about PP is that their dupes are very often nearer to the original version of classic perfumes so can give you that before-reformulation nostalgia hit. For example I won't touch modern Rive Gauche with a bargepole but PP's is fabulous and takes me straight back to the 80s. Opium is another one where IMO PP is better than the real thing.

Complex Chanels however are not brilliant at PP. I find they're ok if you want something which smells "similar to but not exactly like".

snappycamper · 18/05/2020 18:59

Yes, agreed re the Chanel ones. I'd rather save my cash and buy the real thing for those.

I've had both sprays and oils. I prefer spray, haven't noticed the oils being closer to the scent of the original

Greenpop21 · 18/05/2020 19:00

I can’t find any Chanels on PP. They’re not allowed to use similar names are they? Some legal challenges I believe. If you know what Cristalle and No 19 are called I’d like to know!

Craftycorvid · 18/05/2020 19:12

Gone but not forgotten.....

Dewberry from the Body Shop - quite awful really, but has sentimental associations!

Choc de Cardin - Pierre Cardin - was a light, spicy fragrance, sadly discontinued. Bit similar to Miss Dior.

The original Fendi - the one in the chunky bottle with gold accents. All musky, leathery and very 1980s, but sadly missed.

The original formulations of Obsession and Coco Channel - I do sometimes still wear the modern re-boot of Obsession, but it ain’t the same.

My ‘just because’ list: usually as they have happy associations.

White Musk from the Body Shop - I time warp back to the mid 1980s whenever I smell it.

Alien - Thierry Mugler - some quite rude (but lovely)memories with this one Blush

Chloe by Chloe. Ah, the 90s!

Amarige by Givenchy - see above.

Mitsouko - Guerlain - first fragrance DH bought me as a gift.

Currently wearing:

Cabotine by Gres - fruity, floral, lovely.

Black Oud by Monotheme - like Nag Champa incense in a good way.

Greenpop21 · 18/05/2020 19:17

My adult taste has settled on more green, woods florals with a bit of citrus but in my early 20s I had Happy by Clinique, Dune Christian Dior and Issey Miake (?)and a whiff of them takes me right back to some ‘fun’ times. Blush

JMAngel1 · 18/05/2020 19:21

Cabotine is me nervous as hell moving into a house share with 7 strangers in 1994! I can picture my attic room so clearly just reading the word Cabotine. This is why I love fragrance.

You’re so right. Have you ever smelled a box of crayons? Straight back to first day at school.

Craftycorvid · 18/05/2020 20:13

I know! Cabotine’s a golden oldie now, but a good one.

Greenpop21 · 18/05/2020 20:24

I’ve just ordered some L’air du Temps that I found for £14. I remember it being really clean smelling.

Coffeecak3 · 18/05/2020 20:27

Quercus Penhaligons
Woman Hugo Boss
CK1
Verveine L'Occitane
L'air du Temps Nina Ricci
J'Adore Dior
Thé vert Bulgari
Fidji
Colonia Aqua di parma
White Linen Estée Lauder

Coffeecak3 · 18/05/2020 20:28

@Greenpop21 just put L'air du Temps on my list. Reminds me of holidays.

Greenpop21 · 18/05/2020 20:50

Oh you’ve got Figi/Fidgi ? I loved that too . I think I had a cream version that my older sister cast off to me! Similar warm, soft, clean smell?

Greenpop21 · 18/05/2020 21:05

Just been on Fragrantica and yes they describe Fidgi as similar to L’air du temps. Just happened to see someone’s on there mention Ma Griffe and I’m transported back to my mum’s dressing table. She wore that plus Rive Gauche, Worth and Chanel no5 if my dad treated her!

Greenpop21 · 18/05/2020 21:34

I’m posting a lot but this is a lovely distraction. Anyone remember Lauren by Ralph Lauren? It was in a dark red glass bottle. Not thought of that for years.

TheCanterburyWhales · 18/05/2020 21:55

I snagged some old Ma Griffe on eBay last year to add to my perfume memory box.

L'Air du Temps is beautiful- shows the hideous oversweet cloying fragrances you sometimes find that sweet can also be simple and just beautiful.

Fidji is lovely- if you can get a box of those miniatures like they do at airports, the Fidji in them is the vintage version and fabulous.

The Chanels on PP were hunted down by a perfumista on the long running thread, but I can't remember what their names are.

TheCanterburyWhales · 18/05/2020 21:56

Greenpop- I've got a miniature of Lauren in one of the aforementioned airport boxes!

clippityclop · 18/05/2020 22:28

Dune - my every day choice for the last 30 years
Anaïs Anaïs - first perfume, bought for me by my dad
Estée Lauder Modern Muse - evening choice.
CK1 shared with DH. They have changed it though, it's definitely not the same.

M

Greenpop21 · 18/05/2020 22:35

Never heard of those airport boxes. I’ve really enjoyed this little trip down perfume memory lane. I’ve just remembered another from my ozone phase- Escape by Calvin Klein.

snappycamper · 18/05/2020 23:10

@Greenpop21

Spike is no 5
Invisible is Coco
Fabric is Chance
Faint is Allure
Perfect is no 19
Clear is Cristalle
Adoring is mademoiselle

I only tried 5 and 19 and wasn't impressed. Eden's attempt at no 19 is lovely but not like no 19.

snappycamper · 18/05/2020 23:11

Fidgi was the scent of my mum. I adore it almost as much as I adored her. It transports me back to my childhood with a single whiff

Greenpop21 · 19/05/2020 08:53

Oh @snappycamper you’re a legend. Thanks so much. PP do make me laugh. Why would anyone ever call Chanel no 5, Spike!!
