Trying to reboot my 'natural' look, what are your desert-island makeup products?

Going to have a clear out of my makeup, what I've realised in my early 40s is that the cheaper stuff (mostly) isn't doing it for me now, neither is a full face of makeup.

I know so many women who look gorgeous with NO makeup, but unfortunately I'm just not one of them... so I guess now I'm going to try and fake the natural look.

If you could only have FIVE products for your makeup for a long time, but there is absolutely no expense limit on those five items, which would you choose?

Bonus product is you can take one amazing skin booster (serum or whatever) at similarly no budget. Ie a sisley mask or whatever.

I have hundreds of pounds of perfectly all right colours that are all essentially the same thing (maybelline/bourjois/rimmel), I went to selfridges just before christmas to have a good nosey at interesting high-end things, but was terrified of the hordes of assistants (extra Christmas ones) who were so over-helpful they scared me away.

The two I think I know are 1) hourglass ambient in dim light and 2) tarte man-eater mascara.

Everything else open to suggestion.

Maybelline water shine gloss in sugar plum
Orgasm Nars Blush
Rimmel lipstick Vintage Pink

justilou1 · 19/04/2020 09:54

Oooh, I have ditched Beauty Blender Sponges in favour of Juno microfibre ones. They last much longer, are MUCH softer, clean better (soooo much cleaner because they don’t absorb so much product.) I love the finish as well! I keep one in a ziplock bag in my handbag for patting sunscreen over foundation as well. Works very well and doesn’t shift what’s underneath!!! (Admittedly they are different and took a little practice, but I’m never going back.)

thethoughtfox · 19/04/2020 10:24

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder
Laura Mercier Paint with Light palette ( does highlighter, blush and bronzer)
Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Powder
Milk Matte Makeup Foundation ( it's glowy, covers everything and stays on all day)
Skindinavia Bridal Setting Spray - keeps your make up on all day without having to touch it up or even think about it.

thethoughtfox · 19/04/2020 10:40

My skincare product would be Sand and Sky pink clay mask. Life-changing.

pangolina · 19/04/2020 10:59

Body Shop Camomile cleansing butter
Nivea Q10 moisturiser
It Cosmetics CC cream
Lancome Hypnose mascara

Mine are
Boots foundation as mentioned by pp , good coverage , dewy around £15
Mac strobe cream under or over foundation
Clinique waterproof mascara in green tube
L’Oréal blush in peachy colour
I do vary lipsticks
Gimmie brow benefit as I have sparse brows and this builds them
And a new love a little pot of gel eyeliner from Avon (with the finest of lines pushed into the base of the top lashes) ( saw this trick on 10 yrs younger and it works )

theseriousmoonlight · 19/04/2020 11:39

justilou1 · 19/04/2020 12:07

@theseriousmoonlight

justilou1 · 19/04/2020 12:09

Just noticed that they are not full size

ChloeDecker · 19/04/2020 12:23
  1. Daniel Sandler Fluid Blusher-I could use it on my cheeks, eyelids and lips.
  1. Heliocare 360 Fluid Cream
  1. Body Shop Chamomile Cleansing Butter

4 Bare Minerals Bare Pro Foundation (the compressed powder). I’d also need the brush so hopefully doesn’t count as the fifth item Grin

  1. Benefit Triple Performing Facial Emulsion SPF15 for All Skin Types
justilou1 · 19/04/2020 13:58

I forgot another oldie but goodie (also doubles as sunscreen in a pinch, too.) iT Cosmetics Cc Cream (Original Formulation or Illuminating one. I mix them, too.) Have to be honest, I rarely wear foundation these days.... mostly slap on tinted sunscreen and go.

theseriousmoonlight · 19/04/2020 14:07

@justilou1 thank you!

WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo · 19/04/2020 14:14

I have very sensitive, acne prone late 40s skin and what works for me is:
Guinot hydra finish base
Maybelline masterpiece mascara
Laura mercier warm bronze mineral powder
Mac prolongwear brow cream
Mac touch lipstick

WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo · 19/04/2020 14:17

Oh & my outrageously priced bonus product is
iS Clinical pro heal serum advance
It actually works!

MaryBoBary · 19/04/2020 14:29

I've been thinking about getting some new products too, so yesterday I ordered a bare minerals starter kit. Thought I'd give it a try as I've never found a good liquid foundation for my skin. Hopefully it will be my new holy grail! I would also say nivea watermelon shine lip balm. Its amazing.

Spied · 19/04/2020 14:36

Clarins Beauty Flash
Rimmel (yes, Rimmel) wake me up! Foundation
Soap&Glory Supercat eyeliner
Any Lancome mascara
Mac lip glass clear

Bubblysqueak · 19/04/2020 14:46

I follow the no make up make up routine from beauty and the boutique, using heliocare 360 as a base (unfortunately beauty and the boutique no longer stock it so I get it from Amazon.)

Franticbutterfly · 19/04/2020 15:36

Hourglass palette with 6 powders in (they are all amazing);
Anastasia Beverley hills Brow Wiz (I've never found anything better)
Marc Jacobs velvet noir mascara
Mac lipstick in Chatterbox
Nars sheer Glow

Skincare product would be Dr Jart Ceramidin liquid which I use after hyaluronic acid before oil and moisturiser (I'm very dry).

TheLadyAnneNeville · 19/04/2020 15:41

@WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo. Something actually works?... do tell. 😊

S1ngap00rsling · 19/04/2020 15:46

Don't wear makeup

Like Lush solid bars in bathroom for a treat or when traveling

Wear hat if sunny

keffie12 · 26/04/2020 18:13

Dermalogica Primer skin perfect (with tan tint)
YSL Urban Decay palette
Jane Iredale Mascara
YSL eye primer
Eyebrow tint brush on creme

That's a basic day pallette for me above: only other things I would add on would be a lipgloss, Charlotte Tilbury Foundation, Daniel Sandler watercolour blusher and a bronzer finished with a setting spray for a full face

Longpinknails · 26/04/2020 18:37

Items I repurchase over and over again and I cannot live without, which sounds dramatic, I know, are:
Hourglass Caution extreme mascara - the ‘marmite’ of mascaras ( I love it, nothing else compares for me)
Nars bronzer in ‘Laguna’ - (for my fair/light skin, it makes me look alive and it lasts, both as an item and on the skin),
Stila smudge kajal eyeliner in espresso...(perfect for waterline and it lasts hours too. Nothing compares. Bought two this time round as panicked as lots were out of stock)
YSL foundation - Fusion Ink. Easy to apply, blends beautifully and doesn’t age my dry skin. And it lasts many hours. Love it.
Mac mineralise skin finish....for finishing powder.

RoseHarper · 26/04/2020 18:39

I've just started down a similar path, using up what I've got but plan to replace each item with a better quality one...so far my HG are Bobbie Brown Pot Rouge...I chose Calypso which looks terrifying in the pot but on me gives a nice flushed look and makes me look alive (imo). I'll also repurchase a no7 mascara...comb type wand in gold packaging. Stays put all day and doesn't smudge but comes off with hot water. Will read through for recommendations for other items.
