Trying to reboot my 'natural' look, what are your desert-island makeup products?

Going to have a clear out of my makeup, what I've realised in my early 40s is that the cheaper stuff (mostly) isn't doing it for me now, neither is a full face of makeup.

I know so many women who look gorgeous with NO makeup, but unfortunately I'm just not one of them... so I guess now I'm going to try and fake the natural look.

If you could only have FIVE products for your makeup for a long time, but there is absolutely no expense limit on those five items, which would you choose?

Bonus product is you can take one amazing skin booster (serum or whatever) at similarly no budget. Ie a sisley mask or whatever.

I have hundreds of pounds of perfectly all right colours that are all essentially the same thing (maybelline/bourjois/rimmel), I went to selfridges just before christmas to have a good nosey at interesting high-end things, but was terrified of the hordes of assistants (extra Christmas ones) who were so over-helpful they scared me away.

The two I think I know are 1) hourglass ambient in dim light and 2) tarte man-eater mascara.

Everything else open to suggestion.

I don’t wear much make up at all really but mine would be a collection 2000 concealer and Nars orgasm blusher!

I'd recommend keeping your products all cream for a natural look. My top 5 products would be:

  • Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant (smooth skin for a good canvas)
  • Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Foundation OR The Ordinary Serum Foundation (both dewy and light coverage)
  • Nudestix cream blush (in any colour)
  • Marc Jacobs Glow Stick Spotlight
  • MAC Fix Plus OR Caudalie Beauty Elixir

Nars tinted moisturiser (I have Armani silk but find it falls into my pores).
Nars blusher in lustre (slightly peach, very subtle, not sparkly).
Bobbi brown corrector for under eyes.
Bobbi brown gel eyeliner.
Eyeko brow gel.
Eyeko mascara (yoga or beach).

If I want a bit more then,
Eyeshadow sticks from Beauty Pie.
Beauty Pie lipstick.
All skincare is now Beauty Pie.

IT Cosmetics CC cream in Medium
IT Cosmetics Universal Taupe Brow
Max Factor Masterpiece Max Mascara (have tried all the high end mascaras, but this is the best)
Clinique lipstick in Bamboo Pink (my perfect nude)
Urban Decay eyeliner in Stray Dog (a deep taupe with hint of silver).

Skin product would have to be No 7 Protect & Perfect Serum Intense.

I want a makeup room!
As an ex makeup artist and lifelong makeup addict , I think I could fill it...

Am making a list of things to google/purchase. I need treats , so fed up just now.

My makeup collection is large enough to have its own room, so picking 5 products is a fairly significant challenge for me! But here goes:

  • Base: Armani Maestro foundation (incredibly natural & long wearing - light to medium coverage so suits most occasions)

  • Concealer: Hourglass Vanish liquid concealer (doesn't crease and is suitable for under the eyes and on the face)

  • Mascara - Clinique High impact (an oldie but a goodie)

  • Eyebrow definer - Chanel waterproof eyebrow pencil

For a skin booster, I would choose the Westman Atelier tinted highlighter in Peau de Peche. It's a true cream-to-powder texture, like nothing else I've come across before in highlighters. It adds a beautiful healthy glow to the skin. It's quite spendy for a highlighter but worth it,

Laura Mercier secret camouflage - I use under eyes even though they told me not to
Hourglass Ambient lighting palette unlocked - worth the hype
Hourglass Illusion skin tint - fantastic
C.T legendary lashes mascara - found my HG it's as thick as treacle in a good way
Bobbi Brown lipgloss in Buff or Bellini - or mix together , so hydrating and plumping

Paulas choice BHA as a base , makes you all smooth and shiny

Ooo I like this thread!!

For me it has to be:
Mac studio sculpt mixed with some strobing cream - I like a finish between matte and dewy and I find this is perfect. Completely hides all pores, lines etc
Maybelline erasure concealer
NYX setting powder
Hoola bronzer
Lancôme hypnose mascara

As for skin care, my perfect combination at the moment is:
Dermalogica Normal/Dry kit
The Ordinary Buffet serum

Mine are:
Prescription Tretonoin
NUXE delicious SPF 50 for face and body (I use as moisturiser)
IT Cosmetics CC cream
Bobbi Brown cream blusher (either light pink or calypso coral)
Any waterproof black mascara

If I was allowed an extra product it would be Mac prep and prime setting spray.

1 - MAC Painterly - best eye shadow base ever
2 - Anastasia Soft Glam Palette - soft, blends and stays put
3 - Vichy Dermablend setting powder - Better than TooFace, Laura Mercier, etc
4 - Biore Aqua Watery Essence SPF50
5 - No7 Hydralumious in Cool Ivory. **
6 - bonus Dr Jart Cicarepair redness cream

** I flick between this, Estée Lauder Double Wear, and Fenty... but I’ve still not found my HG foundation.

I’ve not covered skincare because I’m a flirt and mix things up, but Rosehip oil and Matrixyl are constant. I’m adding vit c and Retinoid at the moment

I forgot my bonus item....
Tom Ford eye defining pen. It’s basically a brush felt tip black eyeliner. Double ended, but it lasts around 5 months using every day. It’s about £45 though, but worth every penny. I have used just about every eye pen out there and most are around a third of that price, but are not as effective and only last a month, or less.

Firstly I'm not attractive facially..but others say I am. But my plus points are nice eyes.nice long hair and nice personality..I am 55 now and have barely wore make up except the odd lipstick..Result.I look the same when I wake up and go to sleep..I prefer to look who I am instead of a made up face..result..no crows feet..wrinkles etc and nice fresh skin..I put it down to never wearing make up and clogging my skin to try make me look something I'm not..my daughter wears little make up and thinks my skin is in better shape than hers she's 26..But as said
I occasionally wear lipstick. but lately started using Avon Fawless face cream..I've always stayed away from Avon products..but this comes in a little black compact with mirror and compartment for sponge about £6 a lot of offers around 2 for £10 check Avon ebay for best prices no need for foundations etc .light cream all in one that takes around 2 mins and makes you look like had beauty treatment..stays on all day covers any blemishes they've updated the range. I started with nude / natural now they have around 32 ranges covering right up to sun kissed look and Asian and Afro Caribbean skin it lasts for ages..you don't need anything else..then the lipsticks... Maybelline long stay lipstick matt ..matt stays on longer than silk £5.99 buy 2 get 3rd free on all Tesco make up regardless of brands. all colours..I only wear pink..finally not sure of name but superdrug £2.99 again buy 2 get 3rd free..Need nothing else except my perfume I keep at home..no need to buy all these expensive products because you feel obliged to wear make up..forgot factor 30 cream when out in sun ..can get loreal cream a £1 from most poundshops/ poundland etc...A little yellow tube of moisturiser that has factor 15 or 30 sunscreen in for days out when hot and want to safely tan..and really who would wear make up to go out during the day when its 70 + degrees

Assuming that this is more holy grail than island I’ll have

Nars sheer glow foundation
Chantecaille mascara
Chantecaille lip chic Amarylis which I’ll use on my cheeks lightly too
Mac painterly eyeshadow
Marc Jacobs eye liner brown out

Skin product- retinol

If it’s an actual desert island I’ll pass on the foundation and add Tom ford cream eyeshadow in spice.

Are we talking actual desert island in which case

I've just started down a similar path, using up what I've got but plan to replace each item with a better quality one...so far my HG are Bobbie Brown Pot Rouge...I chose Calypso which looks terrifying in the pot but on me gives a nice flushed look and makes me look alive (imo). I'll also repurchase a no7 mascara...comb type wand in gold packaging. Stays put all day and doesn't smudge but comes off with hot water. Will read through for recommendations for other items.

Longpinknails · 26/04/2020 18:37

Items I repurchase over and over again and I cannot live without, which sounds dramatic, I know, are:
Hourglass Caution extreme mascara - the ‘marmite’ of mascaras ( I love it, nothing else compares for me)
Nars bronzer in ‘Laguna’ - (for my fair/light skin, it makes me look alive and it lasts, both as an item and on the skin),
Stila smudge kajal eyeliner in espresso...(perfect for waterline and it lasts hours too. Nothing compares. Bought two this time round as panicked as lots were out of stock)
YSL foundation - Fusion Ink. Easy to apply, blends beautifully and doesn’t age my dry skin. And it lasts many hours. Love it.
Mac mineralise skin finish....for finishing powder.

Dermalogica Primer skin perfect (with tan tint)
YSL Urban Decay palette
Jane Iredale Mascara
YSL eye primer
Eyebrow tint brush on creme

That's a basic day pallette for me above: only other things I would add on would be a lipgloss, Charlotte Tilbury Foundation, Daniel Sandler watercolour blusher and a bronzer finished with a setting spray for a full face

Hourglass palette with 6 powders in (they are all amazing);
Anastasia Beverley hills Brow Wiz (I've never found anything better)
Marc Jacobs velvet noir mascara
Mac lipstick in Chatterbox
Nars sheer Glow

Skincare product would be Dr Jart Ceramidin liquid which I use after hyaluronic acid before oil and moisturiser (I'm very dry).
