Bleaching my hair - do I follow with toner or

Hello,

I’m going to colour my hair from a dark brown to a (hopefully) pale ashy slightly violet blonde.

I’ve bleached it before and managed to get it very light so should be ok with that part but it was a while ago so I was wondering if this would be correct:

A) bleach with 20 vol developer once or maybe twice

B) Followed by either Wella t18 toner OR Wella koleston perfect in 10/16 again using 20 vol developer?

If any hairdressers could advise I’d be so grateful, thank you!

I went from mouse to platinum at home then added a pink toner. Loved it but the upkeep was a nightmare

Hi
I am a hairdresser and I use wella koleston on my own hair - 12/16, so I know about this particular tone.

10/16 will bring it down quite a few shades from your old bleached pic, will be a lot darker if you use that. Also it is quite pink rather than violet.

Reallyyy wouldn't recommend doing it yourself, or this way. But good luck and looking forward to some after pics

It's definitely doable!

Sounds like you have the same attitude about it that I did (aka - eh if it sucks I'll chop it short and it grows out. It's only hair after all). Think that helps! Ha

Good luck! Look forward to the pics!

Thanks - @novacaneforthepain that’s really helpful, I won’t use that koleston colour then. So if you were forced to do your own hair with only products you could buy online, and you wanted to go a cool, ashy but not too silver/grey blonde what would you use and do if you don’t mind me asking? I am definitely open to advice! Thank you! Will attach a picture of the colour I want if that helps?

L'Oréal dialight are really nice gentle toners for after bleaching. Google them and have a look, (I tried to attach a pic but I can't). You will need to buy the specific developer for it though.

Frosty milkshake is probably going to get you the best result. But I would only leave it on for a few minutes and wash it off because after bleaching your hair will grab the colour really quick. You can always repeat it. And they are so gently you can use them often to refresh.

These results will completely depend on how the bleaching goes though.

@novacaneforthepain could I just ask - I have ordered the dialight in frosty milkshake and the developer, what do you think about me doing a root smudge in dialight 9.11 (deep ash)

I think that doing that yourself can be seriously risky. Root smudges are really hard - not to get a line or patches.

If you do it, only leave it on for a few minutes and if it's not effective enough just repeat it

@novacaneforthepain ok thanks Smile I probably will try it just because once I get an idea I have to see if I can do it Grin

Going platinum is easy the first time, it’s the subsequent root touch ups that will be difficult to do without overlapping the bleach and keeping it an even lift. Chances are you’ll get banding and it will cost more to put right as you’ll be paying for a colour correction, but it’s your choice.

You only need a very low vol developer to tone after bleaching, not 20 vol.

@EverythingChanges321 yeah I know you’re right.. I think actually what’s stopping me at the moment is after adding everything up - bleach, developer, Olaplex, two toners and the toner developer (it’s 6 vol) plus brush, clips etc is over £100...
