Now that the Commonwealth event is nearly over, we have another treat ahead of us. Maxima in Indonesia!

In light of what happened on the previous thread, I'm going to take a leaf out of Elizabeth SMT Holmes' book and say critique the clothes and the styling but not the physical appearances of various royal women.

No doubt if they were still here then the tabloids would be finding a way to blame the outbreak on them @BlingLoving!

The British government released guidance against traveling to second homes on the same day Charles flew to his second home.

“Second-homers and tourists were being urged not to travel to rural areas, including the Highlands, as it simply spread the virus,” Joan McAlpine, a member of the Scottish Nationalist Party, told the Times. “Presumably Charles thought those rules did not apply to him.”

Some quotes on W&K 111 visit:

"While in principle it was a nice gesture from W&K, the timing with which this visit was carried out and with whom (essential front line staff) was inappropriate, unnecessary and inherently risky given the current situation with CV infection rates and governments incumbent directive that’s already in place to self isolate. Doing the wrong thing at the wrong time, even with good intentions, causes more harm than good."

"When Kate and William went to the event on Thursday, the government had been telling people all week to stay home for our NHS. They not only didn’t stay at home, they risked getting valuable NHS workers sick. They have traveled, been in large crowds, and it was stated that an employee at BP tested positive. For all these reasons, they should have done a conference call like all the other royals have been doing. It is amazing that the British royals are the most well known and could have the most impact, but the other royal families have been running rings around them in their creativity in supporting their countries and lifting spirits. The Queen is learning Skype, etc and will address the nation soon."

"distracting people from their important work and potentially putting others at risk"

A video or video call would have been better

mrscampbellblackagain · 27/03/2020 13:41

Interesing @thisenglishlife as I saw lots of quotes on insta from staff who were at the visit saying it had been a big morale boost. Guess we all see the quotes we want to see Wink

Personally, I think all of the royals should have stayed where they were and set a good example. Fleeing to country houses or by private jet to different countries is not a good look for any of them.

derxa · 27/03/2020 13:51

Joan McAlpine, a member of the Scottish Nationalist Party, told the Times. Is that a new party in Scotland? I've never heard of the Scottish Nationalist Party.

itswinetime · 27/03/2020 14:14

I think it's tricky surely there are plans in place about who should be where during things like this and also I would think practicalities about which house is easier to run requires least amount of staff, is the most self sufficient food wise ect are all taken in to account to put not only the royals but also their staff at the least risk (I hope that's the thought process anyway) so I'm not sure it's really the same as someone going the holiday let they visit once a year. But I can definitely see Why people are questioning them.

Re the 111 visit I think it's a case of dammed if they do dammed if they don't! Lost of people having been saying William needs to step up for the queen and take a bigger roll and boost morale during this time. Now people are unhappy either way the are in the wrong! Personally it looked like they took reasonable precautions and if the staff doing the job say it helped then that's enough for me!

Finally the comments he made in Ireland, in hindsight were a mistake but I don't think he meant them in the way they are being portrayed there! He was asking a first responder a question. It wasn't worded the best but in early March we were in a very different situation!

QueenOfTheAndals · 27/03/2020 14:24

@derxa that's a typo, she's SNP.

BlingLoving · 27/03/2020 14:25

@QueenOfTheAndals there was one headline that suggested that Meghan and Harry had given it to Charles.

Personally, if the story about them moving to LA is true, I really hope they did the move as soon as they got back from the UK - ie went straight there. Because I have some sympathy for Charles/William/Kate etc decamping to their homes out of London pretty much at the time the announcements/guidelines were changing because I suspect all of them genuinely do think of those as their core homes, but moving country towards the end of March would absolutely be a sign of obliviousness to me.

They shared that WHO thing which I think went down well. But their instagram is also a bit too "ooh, we need to be all warn and fuzzy and we'll get through this together." They're at real risk of being laughed at in the same way that celebs going make up free or the ones singing that ridiculous song last week went in terms of being laughed at.

mrscampbellblackagain · 27/03/2020 14:28

Agree Bling, tough times to be a celeb or influencer - so many are handling this so badly.

QueenOfTheAndals · 27/03/2020 14:42

At least they didn't join in that cringeworthy singalong. I thought their post about WHO was fine and WHO clearly thought so too as they reposted it a few days later!

@derxa that's a typo, she's SNP. I know. I was being sarcastic. I'm not a fan of the SNP despite being the most Scottish person in Scotland. Charles always goes to Birkhall at this time of year.

BlingLoving · 27/03/2020 14:56

The Who thing was good, no complaints. But they've had a few that have been fine but it's a fine line they are very close to... Grin

But then you get Patrick Stewart doing a Sonnet a day. Kind of pointless but I have to admit, listening to his voice reading them gives me a warm glow so I'm taking it as a positive. Or Chrissy Teigan doing her "court" which I've only seen glimpses of but has been funny!

thisenglishlife · 27/03/2020 15:22

Posted those quotes to see opinions/as a topic for debate @mrscampbellblackagain

I personally don't think it's was the right time to visit key workers in their workplace unnecessarily (especially since anyone could potentially be a carrier), but also know it is a morale boost. It is different to the Blitz though, leaving home and being amongst other endangers them and ourselves. I think this is the time for all public personas to use technology.

I was going to say that Princess Victoria and family did well with the hand washing viedo, but have seen that they have visited a hospital (and her husband PD has had a kidney transplant in the past, making him more vulnerable).

Birkhall is where C&C spent their honeymoon, wasn't it? Doesn't he adore the red squirrels there too? I think William said that they were like pets to him.

AdaColeman · 27/03/2020 16:23

Just as an aside, I've been reading some research that suggests that red squirrels could be carriers of leprosy, and that one of the factors for the spread of the disease during the Middle Ages was the popularity of using red squirrel fur to trim garments.

thisenglishlife · 27/03/2020 16:48

Uh oh!

Charles, who is patron of the Red Squirrel Survival Trust, said: “They come into the house at Birkhall and we get them chasing each other round and round the inside.

“If I sit here quietly, they will do so around me.

“Sometimes when I leave my jackets on a chair with nuts in the pockets, I see them with their tails sticking out, as they hunt for nuts – they are incredibly special creatures."

Prince William was also interviewed for the birthday edition of the magazine.

He said of Charles: “He is completely infatuated by the red squirrels that live around the estate in Scotland – to the extent that he’s given them names and is allowing them into the house."

I really don't think she gives good wedding!

mrscampbellblackagain · 27/03/2020 17:07

Apparently she deliberately tries not to shine at weddings so as to leave the attention rightly on the bride.

mrscampbellblackagain · 27/03/2020 17:10

I believe I read that in Hello so it must be true Wink

thisenglishlife · 27/03/2020 17:38

@paradyning Some of those outfits are from the noughties and it wasn't a good decade style-wise

I quite like the black velvet coat, it's not very 'wedding', but it looked quite pretty on her. I believe it was by Libelula (I only remember as it means dragonfly or something in Spanish).

Kate's pre-engagement outfits are classic 00s.

A friend of mine worked for a member of the Royal Household and didn't get married until after she'd left their employment as she didn't want to invite them to the wedding. I think the DofC is good about not shining too bright.
