Ye gods, jeans are a nightmare!

I have short legs and am a bit fat. I look better in straights than skinnies. I also look better with minimal stretch, as the higher the polyester factor, the more they cling.

Where is a good place to shop for size 16/18, 30” length, non-stretch jeans?

I would recommend Sainsbury girlfriend style jeans.
I am a short arsed size 16 and find they fit better than their straight jeans which are too long even in short fitting and too soft and stretchy to be flattering.
The girlfriend ones don't come in short fitting, but are designed to be rolled up and slightly cropped, so it's easy to adjust the leghth. here

Jeans are awful. I can’t believe anyone finds them comfortable. We have a strange thing in society that makes us believe we need to wear jeans and have to find the right ones for us etc etc. I haven’t worn them in over a year and it’s bliss haha

WentToMarket · 06/03/2020 08:04

Thanks for the Sainsbury’s tip, I’ve ordered some.

Maybe I should have said ‘trousers’ are a nightmare. Smile Anything with legs in, really, but it just so happens I’m looking for jeans at the moment.

I saw loads of size 16 straight leg and also mom style jeans in Topshop yesterday, in my local branch, in the sale. Not stretchy or clingy at all. Not sure what their online offering is like though. Good luck on your hunt, it's tricky.

BikeRunSki · 06/03/2020 08:20

Another vote for Sainbury’s girlfriend jeans.

TeddyIsaHe · 06/03/2020 08:21

Topshop are my holy grail jeans. They sit and wear so well. You do sometimes have to hunt for ones that down have mad tips/zips/patterns but once you find a pair they’re amazing!

TeddyIsaHe · 06/03/2020 08:21

That don’t have.

BikeRunSki · 06/03/2020 08:25

I agree that trousers are a nightmare. (5’8”, chunky legs, size 16). I work in building sites and really need to wear trousers to tick into wellies, climb ladders, hop in and out of 4x4s and because flappy clothes are no allowed for h&s reasons. I have the same Boden trousers in 5 colours. So bored of them. They are not particularly flattering, but they fit!!

WentToMarket · 06/03/2020 12:00

I have also bought some Topshop ones. Thanks! They do a huge range, but sooooo many of them have raw hems. Most unbecoming.

I'm similar sized (size 16 apple) and also look better in straight legs. I've just bought two different pairs of size 16 jeans from M&S - the Sienna and the Sophia. If you don't like stretch you might find the Sophia a bit of a problem as they're quite high waisted so you notice the stretch a bit more, but I think they both fit pretty well. I like the choice of leg length although even the short is slightly too long. Fatface also do a good straight leg jean, but they are more pricey. Good luck!

EdithHope · 06/03/2020 17:22

I wear lots of my jeans cuffed, depending on the weather and the footwear so raw hems don't bother me so much. And sometimes depending on the style (sale price!) I will buy jeans that are too long and trim them down to fit my 5ft 2" frame.

WentToMarket · 06/03/2020 18:17

Have you got good legs though, Edith? I find unless I’m wearing sandals turn ups make my legs look even shorter!

YouJustDoYou · 06/03/2020 18:19

I'm in the same boat. I buy asda men's short "skinny" fit - they're better quality, deeper pockets, cheaper, last 10 times longer and don't cling. Never going back to anything else.

WentToMarket · 06/03/2020 18:34

Blimey, that’s quite a random discovery! So do the men’s skinny fit come out like a straight fit on you? Skinny doesn’t look right for me.

BikeRunSki · 06/03/2020 19:43

I’ve tried to wear men’s tyusets in the past, but I’m too “hip-y” for them to fit, unless they see huge, turn they are massive everywhere else.

EdithHope · 06/03/2020 19:59

Hmmm don't know whether my legs are good or not, I don't think about them too much too busy hating other parts of my body!

Probably easier to wear cuffed hems with skinny jeans imho, so straight legged jeans would have to sit just right - but then do you have multiple pairs with different lengths to go with different footwear?

YouJustDoYou · 07/03/2020 08:30

Yes! The normal men's trousers fit completely wrong on me as a female (weird crotch placement etc), but the short skinny fit is almost perfect. I'm usually a 32 by found that one a bit too tight on the thighs so went up to the 34 and it's perfect; straight, not too tight.

WentToMarket · 07/03/2020 11:42

Excellent detective work there, You.

I’m thinking of calling them tyusets from now on, in honour of Bike. They sound like some sort of pantaloon. Grin

If you're looking for proper denim, non-strech then Monki is very good. Also some Levi's.

MangoFeverDream · 07/03/2020 12:40

Just give up on jeans, they rarely look good on anybody.

MrsJoshNavidi · 07/03/2020 12:44

I'm 5'2" and size 16, chunky legs.
I have 3 pairs of the same M&Co jeans in different colours. They are stretch and fairly high waisted, but they fit well. I have to wear a belt with mine because my waist is small on relation to my hips and legs, but that's ok.

LizzieMacQueen · 07/03/2020 15:36

Friend with similar shape used to buy maternity jeans.

YouJustDoYou · 08/03/2020 18:18

Mind you, today I happened to try on some "mom fit" ones in the sale from m&s for £15 and not only do they cover my "is she pregnant? No, just a bit fat" tummy but they're straight too...converted again!! I'm so fickle.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 08/03/2020 19:06

Straight jeans and flares are back in - I’d forgotten how comfy they are! I hate the way skinnies feel (but did quite like the look for a few years) - soft non-stretch denim is a revelation! Plus ten times more flattering if one’s lower abdomen is not one’s best bit.

WentToMarket · 12/03/2020 10:40

Just reporting back to say that the Sainsbury's Girlfriend ones are a good fit but I'm not mad keen on the colour. HOWEVER, their Vintage Straight in charcoal/faded black are a hit! V high waist, and not clingy.
