What can I wear with this dress?

DH's son is getting married this summer and, although it's a bit early, I've bought this dress Wallis (the pink version) as I saw it on the website and loved it.

I don't usually wear dresses (or get dressed up!) if I can help it so please help me with what to wear with it! I've got a dodgy ankle so can't wear heels for too long so I was thinking of wedges? What sort of jacket or cardigan?

I'm 5'7" and a 16-18 if that makes any difference.

Sorry for the questions but I have absolutely no idea as you can probably tell! It's at a 5 star hotel and I know I'm going to feel out of place but I'd like to look half decent whilst feeling out of place!

If you prefer the black and white Wallis dress it is absolutely fine to wear black and white to a wedding

Ninkanink · 29/02/2020 09:46

@notacooldad no worries - that’s what I did too which is why I made the second comment! Smile

Ninkanink · 29/02/2020 09:50

@PinkSparklyPussyCat yes you could definitely wear a black bag with it. However you could also treat yourself to the lovely gold shimmer version that comes up on the link Grin which would go beautifully and add a bit of extra sparkle to your outfit.

You will look fantastic!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/02/2020 10:55

I do rather like the gold but I didn't know if it would go but now you've suggested it I might have to!

Ninkanink · 29/02/2020 11:02

It would go, I think. And it’s a more celebratory colourway for a summer wedding.

(I am a terrible handbag enabler Grin )

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/02/2020 13:51

I'm quite liking these, and I usually get on ok with Next shoes as they do wide fit and half sizes!

OP you have options! This thread has been a lovely antidote to the bad-tempered nonsense I've been reading. Love the idea of rose gold with the pink dress.

Ninkanink · 29/02/2020 20:01

👍👍👍

Go for it!

HermioneWeasley · 29/02/2020 20:07

Fitted blazer like this would look good.

Big no to linen - it always looks sad. You need some structure

Thank you all so much for your help, as other posters have said this has been a really nice thread and I'm glad I asked your advice!

The sandals and bag arrived today. I love the sandals, like most Next shoes for me they fit perfectly, are soft and the strap sits below Cyril the Cyst (I named him as he can't be removed so we're stuck with each other!). I'm not as keen on the bag as it's very shiny but it does the job and goes with the dress. For the evening I'll be taking my rose gold Saltwater sandals for comfort!

Regarding a shrug/jacket, I've decided to go for a black shrug. I tried it with one I've got and it looked more striking. I'm very pale so with white, pale pink and rose gold I'll fade into oblivion without a stronger colour!

I might use this as an excuse to buy some rose gold jewellery!

Sounds perfect! So happy that the shoes fit and are comfortable! Must say if you don’t love the bag I think you should return it - it’s such a shame to have things that aren’t quite right, it means you’re not likely to use them much.

Could I link to a few suggestions? I’ve been looking at blush pink bags just today for another thread...Is there a budget you might be willing to go to for a bag that you could keep and use for evenings/special occasions?

Also, you should definitely treat yourself to some rose gold jewellery! Smile

Ninkanink · 01/03/2020 19:25

I’ll just do one for now....

Here’s one from Dune that is around the same budget and not quite so shiny. I think it’s really cute! It’s not leather though, if that matters:

If you want more links let me know. Smile Smile

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 01/03/2020 19:35

I'll probably only use the bag for the wedding anyway but I really love that Dune one! If you don't mind posting some more links that would be great, thank you.

I never do fake tan OP and don't really bother sunbathing either but I do think special occasion dresses look better if legs aren't really white. I only dress formally once a year or so. Last time I picked up a tip from MN to use Sally Hansen leg make up. It really, really works well. You can choose how light or dark you make it. You just rub it in so you can guarantee it doesn't look streaky. Then you just wash it off afterwards.

Ninkanink · 01/03/2020 19:56

These are slightly more expensive.

And this one is more expensive still, so I guess it depends how much you would want to spend, and maybe also quite blingy:

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 01/03/2020 20:08

Ooh I love the Beliza! I'm not sure about the other two but I might have to order that!

OP posts:
Ninkanink · 01/03/2020 20:20

Yes I really like it; It’s probably the one I would go for. Obviously needs a little more TLC as it’s suede, but it’s lovely and subtle and a timeless design.

Here are another two, from Kurt Geiger. Different direction but I tried to find a couple that you might be able to get more use out of day to day (not leather though so not sure how durable they’d be), but also I thought perhaps the slightly darker shade and the mock croc would add another level of texture/interest:

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 01/03/2020 20:23

They're both nice as well but I'm still leaning towards the Dune one. Even DH said it was nice and he could imagine me using it, although I did cover up the price when I showed him!

OP posts:
Ninkanink · 01/03/2020 20:28

Heh! Well I definitely agree that you should order it. Smile

Ninkanink · 02/03/2020 18:30

So @PinkSparklyPussyCat have you bought it??

Love a handbag thread... Grin

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/03/2020 07:07

Oops sorry, yes I've ordered it and it should be here today or tomorrow. I've also ordered shrugs in black, white and pink so I can decide which one looks best.

OP posts:
pickingdaisies · 03/03/2020 10:20

That suede bag is beautiful OP, and you have time to find just what you want.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/03/2020 18:39

The bag has arrived! It's lovely but I'm sending it back as it's going to mark so easily. I'm gutted but don't want to spend £60 on something I'll probably only be able to use once!

I've also ordered the navy polka dot dress that I linked to earlier, just because I want to see what it looks like. Not sure if it's right for a summer wedding but I just want to compare it as I'm wondering if I'd be more comfortable and I wouldn't need a shrug as my arms wouldn't be on show!

OP posts:
Ninkanink · 03/03/2020 18:41

Don’t send it back!!

It won’t mark so easily if you spray it liberally with suede protector. I got burger grease on a mink coloured suede bag once (hadn’t sprayed it) and it came out given some time and some careful cleaning.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/03/2020 18:12

@Ninkanink I'm keeping the bag but there's been a complete change of plan. I ordered the navy polka dot dress for comparison and I love it. It suits my shape and colouring better and I felt more comfortable in It - even DH said it looked better.

polka dot

I tried the Dune bag and rose gold wedge sandals with it and they seemed to work. The only problem is the bag and the dress are both faulty! Luckily they are both in stock so I'll exchange them even if it does mean more deliveries from Hermes!

Now to find some rose gold jewellery - any tips welcome!
