Curly or straight?

I have naturally curly hair which I've been straightening for many years - I grew up in the days before GHDs and was badly bullied at school because of my hair, so when decent straighteners became available, that was it for me. I've never really learned how to style it any other way!

My hairdresser has been trying to persuade me to go curly recently, and I'm completely torn about it. I think it looks messy and unprofessional, but I'm well aware that it isn't what I'm used to, and it would ne nice not to have to heat-style my hair all the time.

Honest opinions - which looks best? Obviously I need to get better at shaping the curls while my hair's still damp, and I'm growing out some layers at the moment so the bottom part looks rather sparse. Would you persevere with the natural look if you were me, and how can I make the curls look a bit tidier if so?

Curly 100%!

MsChatterbox · 22/02/2020 15:23

Also to improve the curls you need to test a few products (my sons hair is mixed race so his products may be too heavy for you, but I love cantu for him and also aunt Jackie's o la la curling cream), apply a small amount when your hair is wet and then finger coil in sections!

Curly 100%

Curly!

Whynosnowyet · 22/02/2020 15:25

Curls...
Once had a friend with long straight black hair.
When my water's broke I waddled to her house. A huge mass of curls opened the door! Cue huge contractions and just made it to hospital!
She used to straighten it every day. Been besties for years and I had no idea! Persuaded her to go curly as it was amazing!!
Before GHD's she ironed it!
Shock

Curly!

ThatLibraryMiss · 22/02/2020 15:41

Curly, use the curly girl method and and get it cut by someone who specialises in curly hair. I bet it's much, much curlier than you think.

ZoeandChandon · 22/02/2020 15:42

Definitely curly, looks great.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 22/02/2020 15:44

Def curls.

You look a bit like Phoebe Waller Bridge and that has to be a good thing

mynameiscalypso · 22/02/2020 15:45

I totally get where you're coming from as I have always straightened my naturally curly hair. The difference is, my hair looks shit when it's curly whereas yours looks awesome. I'm totally jealous; it looks so modern and fresh.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 22/02/2020 15:49

mumsiedarlingrevolta I can categorically say the resemblance ends there, but thank you!

My hairdresser has curly hair herself and she did show me how to finger-curl with mousse. Sadly it was very windy today and the picture was the result. I guess I just need to practice. It's all new to me after almost 20 years of straighteners.

Curls all the way. Your hair looks lovely both ways, but curly slightly has the edge. I'm v jealous, as mine is poker straight (and not in a glossy, nice way).

Layoverlife · 22/02/2020 15:55

Curly! 👌🏼

PhoneLock · 22/02/2020 15:58

Curly! Mine is naturally curly and I've never straightened it.

MazDazzle · 22/02/2020 16:00

Curly.

Looks young and funky.

Blueberryblueberry · 22/02/2020 16:00

Curly! Look up the curly girl method!

JustForTheTasteOfIt · 22/02/2020 16:07

Curls curls curls!

JeSuisPrest · 22/02/2020 16:07

After 30 years of fighting the frizz and straightening I've embraced my curls. I'll be honest, I feel more grown up and polished with straight hair, so I still do it sometimes, it's not an either/or permanent thing ime.

Curly or straight?
helpmum2003 · 22/02/2020 16:12

I think there's pros and cons to both. I'm doing curly girl method which has really improved my curls and helped with frizz etc.
I did straighten for a while but it is very time consuming and any dampness and i was back to square one so gave up.
I do agree that curly hair rarely looks as smart or professional....

helpmum2003 · 22/02/2020 16:14

Posted too soon. I would go for yours curly. It's not frizzy and looks sophisticated.

JustForTheTasteOfIt · 22/02/2020 16:16

Here's me currently doing curly girl method - have fallen back in love with my curls now they're all bouncy and new!

canithrottlesomeppl · 22/02/2020 16:17

I'm the same as @JeSuisPrest I feel more done up having straight hair. During the week I leave my hair to dry curly but when I go out I always straighten it.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 22/02/2020 16:37

JeSuisPrest and JustForTheTasteOfIt your curls look incredible! I think the longer your hair is, the heavier the curl, and it probably stops it from springing out at the ends like mine is doing. I probably need to grow it a bit more to get that sort of effect.

I do agree that straight is smarter. I doubt if I'll do curly all the time but it will be nice to have the option of different looks, as I've had a pixie cut until quite recently and I could really only wear it one way.
