Curly or straight?

I have naturally curly hair which I've been straightening for many years - I grew up in the days before GHDs and was badly bullied at school because of my hair, so when decent straighteners became available, that was it for me. I've never really learned how to style it any other way!

My hairdresser has been trying to persuade me to go curly recently, and I'm completely torn about it. I think it looks messy and unprofessional, but I'm well aware that it isn't what I'm used to, and it would ne nice not to have to heat-style my hair all the time.

Honest opinions - which looks best? Obviously I need to get better at shaping the curls while my hair's still damp, and I'm growing out some layers at the moment so the bottom part looks rather sparse. Would you persevere with the natural look if you were me, and how can I make the curls look a bit tidier if so?

Curly. Out of interest, what mousse did you use?

acatcalledjohn · 22/02/2020 16:48

Curly!

I'm a curly girl and I still occasionally treat myself to a blow out. But the curls win. And I am in a corporate office based environment.

Definitely recommend looking up the curly girl method!

drina27 · 22/02/2020 17:25

Curly! 100% as others have said.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 22/02/2020 17:33

Doctor it was just a cheap own brand mousse from Boots. I only put it on the ends, and there was also some leave-in conditioner on there.

Get your hands on Cantu products OP - they are miracles!

BrollyMo · 22/02/2020 17:54

Definitely curly! My dd recently gave up the straighteners and went back to the curly girl method - she gets loads of compliments now and her hair looks so much healthier.

BrollyMo · 22/02/2020 17:55

Ooh and she uses Sainsbury's own conditioner and highly recommends it.

Go curly, it's so much easier to deal with once you get the hang of it.
Mine is corkscrew curls, you should see it in the wind. I look like a mad scientist caracture. If it gets out of hand I just tie it in a messy bun.

An update... I left it curly for work today - a lot neater than in the picture with the help of some mousse and using the straighteners to curl some odd bits the right way. And nobody has noticed! That's what happens when you work in an office full of blokes. I'll definitely be wearing it curly more often now, as it was a lot less work than I was expecting and I'm sure the reduction in heat-styling will be good for my hair.

I think longer hair works best with curls, on me anyway - my short curls look very frumpy. Yours look more waves though?

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 24/02/2020 11:11

Yes, it is more wavy than curly. There aren't any actual ringlets, which I think would look nicer, but there you go. If I really mess around with the mousse, I can make it look like a Marcel wave, which I suppose would be handy if I had to go to a 20s themed party...

Unlike a PP, I would advise against Cantu as it made my hair stringy and limp. AsIAm is much nicer. Brands like Bounce Curl are great, but so is the budget Tesco gel (55p) and the Sainsbury's Apple Conditioner (75p).

Other people have raved about brands like Noughty, and I particularly like the MooGoo protein shampoo for the occasional deep cleanse as it's nasty free.
