Anything you have found a waste of money and wish you didn’t purchase, I’ll start Kevin A contour pallet! Looks grey on my face

An innocuous thread will be started on here asking for a lipstick recommendation

Said thread is likely started by the product's marketing team. Then all their paid influencers are given the cure to jump on.. We should call it out when we see it

Icecreamdiva · 19/02/2020 16:24

I could say any one of my numerous eyeshadow palettes which I buy and rarely use. But they are so pretty and colourful I can’t regret them.

Icecreamdiva · 19/02/2020 16:26

I agree CT isn’t great. The eyeshadow sticks dried out very quickly and had to be binned. The lipsticks are drying and the magic cream is heavy and over scented.

gingersausage · 19/02/2020 17:46

@magicrainbowbeans that was my point.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 19/02/2020 20:51

Not beauty/skincare but I've been saying to anyone who will listen on MN for ages, isn't it funny how brands are suddenly all over S&B...Hush is the main culprit in recent years on here, whatever you think of their clothes (and if I want synthetic gaudy cold shoulder batwing shite, I'll pay Primark prices ta) I refuse to believe there is a group of MNers who seemingly base their lives around them. Mint Velvet. Saltwater. Me &Em.
Great publicity departments and product placers, that's for sure.

Swandrake · 19/02/2020 21:02

Hourglass primer
Hourglass poweders, waste of money/stay away. Rimmel etc far better. Benefit Their Real mascara. Living Proof hair products. NARS lip crayon, drying and I typically love their lipsticks.

AnnDaloozier · 19/02/2020 22:40

@Destinesia I’ve been on S& since it started.

It’s never been “ a empowering place of knowledge and information where (mostly) women try to help each other make the most of themselves and share interests. Mean-spirited comments are not expected and constructive criticism is delivered gently. For that reason, people post photos of themselves, safe in the knowledge that they won't be torn to shreds. You posted your photo on here too, asking for advice, no-one made unkind remarks ”.

That bollocks. How long have you bee here ? 17 years too?

ExpletiveDelighted · 19/02/2020 22:48

I have to say I don't recognise S&B from that description either, I ended up hiding it for a long time as I found the sneering and sniping so depressing. School run dresses, tunics, leggings, mum boots, mum bobs. I only venture in very occasionally now. That's not to say there aren't some lovely threads, but it's definitely not all constructive and supportive.

AnnDaloozier · 19/02/2020 22:50

lol. Ducking tunics

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 20/02/2020 06:18

An awful lot of the sneering (and it absolutely was rife and occasionally still is) came from one particular poster who saw MN in general, but S&B especially as her own playground.
She is still immediately recognisable as the starter of any clothes thread slagging off specific, commonplace, clothing styles and/or her own phobia of poorly pedicured feet. Presumably she gets her kicks (no pun intended) from thinking about the common or garden MN who thought they looked passable until reading her diatribes against the tunic, the legging or a cracked heel.
I always imagine her to look like Bet Lynch and feeling it's a good look. Wink

AnnDaloozier · 20/02/2020 06:47

Imagine!

ExpletiveDelighted · 20/02/2020 07:24

A lot of the sneering was one person yes, but there were plenty of others who joined in.

Aworldofmyown · 20/02/2020 08:36

Mac Ruby Woo lipstick does not suit everyone!!
All chanel nail products are useless.

I love the ordinary though!!!

TheLadyAnneNeville · 20/02/2020 09:03

@ChicChicChicChiclana I agree. I stocked up on my No7 lippies last week whilst they had an offer on. In reality I paid £7 for my two favourite shades which I wear all year round. When I was single and childfree, I’d happily “treat myself” to Estée Lauder or some such. None of the expensive brands I bought then come close to the No7.

gingersausage · 20/02/2020 09:56

Yes @AnnDaloozier, just imagine 🙄

beanaseireann · 20/02/2020 10:04

BookMeOnTheSudExpress
I'm intrigued re the very negative poster.
I wonder what name she uses?
I haven't noticed one poster in particular being very harsh. Perhaps I'm unobservant?
I find Style and Beauty hepful.
It's certainly introduced me to brands I'd never heard of.
If somebody gushes about a product there will be counter posts, so I always keep an open mind.
I did wonder about all the Hush love on the site.
Mind you, the clothes do look nice.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/02/2020 10:54

Babyliss Big Hair ( the Revlon one is AMAZING though)

Revolution foundation-great colour but weird consistency

No silicone shampoos/conditioner- my hair NEEDS cones or it looks like straw Grin

Nude lipsticks- I have millions of them, they are all orange. Took me a while to realise I need pink tones Hmm

The Ordinary ...is very ordinary, very underwhelming!

Bare Minerals-over hyped itchy powder.

No 7 Hydroluminous foundation-aged me 20 years, the complete opposite of what it's meant to do.

It was unnecessarily unkind, particularly as over recent months she has been trolled relentlessly in all aspects of her life I missed the comment about DWU but that's an every day saying in my world but wrt trolling it's worth actually reading up a bit on the whole Sali Hughes /trolling situation as there's a lot more to it especially with her appalling treatment of Dawn O'P,it puts a whole different light in it.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/02/2020 11:08

** also meant to say, for those posters who like JM perfume but don't like the price or the fact it doesn't last, try Perfume Parlour roll on oil dupes, smell exactly the same and last all day.

slipperyeel · 20/02/2020 11:08

Completely agree that non SLS conditioner is awful. They use it for a reason.

Great thread, there are brands that seem to get an unreasonable kicking. Ie Boden, caters for women (like many of us I would assume) who are time poor, they are cut for women and not young girls and cater for sizes 6-22 but it’s got so anyone who is embarrassed to mention them.

And then we have toast and Cos, universally feted despite being extremely expensive and cut for women over 5ft10 only. I actually have a few things from toast (and I’m 5ft2) and they’re good quality but there’s something weird about the way they pop up on every thread.

slipperyeel · 20/02/2020 11:09

And yeah, Saint Charlotte of Tilbury gets way too much praise

beanaseireann · 20/02/2020 13:51

Who or what is DWU ?
What happened between Sali Hughes and Dawn O Porter ?
I'm lost Hmm

I'd love a beauty blogger who has similar skin/ hair colour/ eye colour to me.
What would suit Sali H and Lisa Eldridge doesn't suit me.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/02/2020 15:32

DWU- death warmed up, expression for someone who looks under the weather. Wrt Sali Hughes/Dawn O'P, don't want to detail the thread but suffice to say Sali wasn't quite the victim she made herself out to be and she should perhaps remember that if one posts bullying tweets they can be read by others until one deletes them when they realise Wink

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/02/2020 15:42

Just thought of another- Weleda Skin Food, smelled really medicinal and stung my skin.

EuroMillionsWinner · 20/02/2020 21:52

Essie nail varnish. Thin and chips.

Annasgirl · 20/02/2020 22:01

Well I hope the poster mentioning the perfume parlour is not a plant - I've just gone and ordered my own discontinued favourite perfume and 2 dupes of Creed for DH - I'll let you all know when they arrive if they go into best ever purchases or worst ever.
