I need help, what do older brides wear?

I'm getting married in June [register office] and have no clue how to dress or where to start looking. Any recommendations or suggestions would be welcome.

I'm in my 60's, 5' 2" size 14 on top 12 below but can get away with a size 14 dress ok usually.

I've got my eye on a hat that's fashioned in a large pink chiffon rose style on a headband that I'd like to wear on the day but I need help with the whole outfit and how to look special and not like I'm one of the guests please.

Congratulations!

Perhaps you could show us the hat, or something similar, so people could suggest things to complement it.

Whatdotheywear · 10/02/2020 08:33

Thankyou for replying, it's similar to this one but it's looser petals a bit blowsier - not so formal:

That's beautiful! Congratulations, I am getting married in June too :)
How about something like this?

What’s your style generally?

redwoodmazza · 10/02/2020 09:01

I am early 60s. What about a nice dress [hoping you can find one] with a matching fitted jacket/bolero to cover any flabby arms but more importantly, to keep you warm? [Can still be chilly in June!] Dress could be cream [like the one above] and hat, shoes and bag to match - in your lovely pink shade?

Ladybird37 · 10/02/2020 09:05

I had a 'confident' dress from bombshell hq. Elbow length sleeves, flattering structure and some stretch in the sides to make it hang nicely. In lots of colours and patterns too. congratulations!

NiteFlights · 10/02/2020 09:11

Yes, what’s your usual style? I like the idea of the hat.

Ninkanink · 10/02/2020 09:12

I’m 43, getting married this month, also a registry wedding. I’m wearing this dress from Hobbs, with bridal shoes and pearl and Swarovski headband/birdcage veil.

Ours is very small, though - just the two of us and our two witnesses, so I don’t need to worry about looking like a guest.

You could buy a wedding dress from somewhere like Monsoon.

@Ladybird37 I love those/ just taken a look. Age appropriate but not frumpy and you could style to be sophisticated or quirky.

I just need an occasion now 😃

Ladybird37 · 10/02/2020 09:57

It’s a great dress! I’m tall and fat and never wear dresses and I felt good in it. If you look at the website there are women of all sizes, ages and colouring looking great in it.

Whatdotheywear · 10/02/2020 10:14

Ooh, thankyou for the suggestions, my style is usually sheath/wiggle dresses in pastel colours with a pattern to break up the outline a bit.

Do you think a handbag or a small bouquet would be best?

Congratulations! (And to everyone else getting married). Similar age here, op. I got married in a dress from Warehouse, so this is a case of doing what I say not what I do, but my two favourite wedding outfits are Bianca Jagger's suit and the dress Sarah Murdoch wore for Jerry Hall and Rupert Murdoch' wedding. (Weird Mick Jagger connection going on there I know.) Admittedly Sarah was a guest but I think that dress would work perfectly for a bride.

I wouldn't want as much cleavage as Bianca and I'd have longer sleeves than Sarah but otherwise I'd use either outfit as my inspiration.

Congratulations, Cantdecidewhich and Ninkanink how organised are you so far?

The Bianca outfit is lovely, I think it might swamp me though.
I've just looked at the bombshell hq site, those 'confident' dresses
are lovely, esp the pink one with roses on [sold out]. I'd prefer a higher neck though.

Do you think a sheath dress with pink roses on would be too much?

Our friend had a cream tea dress.

I think a sheath dress with pink roses sounds lovely. Have you had a look at Phase 8? Sounds as if it might be just up their street.

Tartyflette · 10/02/2020 10:56

This looks awful on the model because it doesn’t fit her! But if you look at the other photos of just the dress you may get a better idea.

Ninkanink · 10/02/2020 10:56

I’m not having a bouquet because of the flowers on my dress - I think it will clash too much. I’ll buy a beautiful bunch of flowers for our home though just to mark the occasion. For that reason I’ll have a little clutch bag (and bags are my thing anyway so it would be odd not to have one).

Tartyflette · 10/02/2020 11:09

No roses but i think this looks elegant

Ninkanink · 10/02/2020 11:13

I did consider having a very small bouquet of just Baby’s Breath. It can look very striking in its simplicity.

I’m all done organising really, since it’s such a small affair (we both live far away from family so we will celebrate with them when we catch up with them). Just need to order cakes for the champagne tea afterwards, and book a restaurant for a meal in the evening.

Ninkanink · 10/02/2020 11:16

Thanks for the congratulations 😊

Ninkanink · 10/02/2020 11:18

Oh I like the one Tartyflette linked to!

Coldemort · 10/02/2020 11:22

As much as I'm not a royalist I thought Camilla Parker Bowles looked lovely on her wedding day, very understated and dignified

@Cantdecidewhich - where is the dress from in your picture please? I'm getting married this year & that's exactly what I had in mind
