Black opaque tights (40 / 60 denier) - recommendations?

Aridane · 06/02/2020 07:12

My extensive bundle of work tights after many (very many!) years are now past their best.

So should now replace.

I bought a few replacements from Tesco, M&S and Sainsbury’s - intending to see which worked best. But muddled them up and now can’t tell which are which.

Anyhow, there are some I don’t want to buy again- ie bagged around the ankles, snagged very easily or were sort of patchy in colour. A far cry from my old faithfuls of 5 years +Blush

So any recommendations for decent black opaque thoughts 40 / 60 denier?

I am a shortie (5’2”) and one sized tights - unless on the small side - tend to be too big.

Thanks!

Fall down - I think people are referring to the gusset sinking and having to be hoiked up - rather than the whole thing collapsing. My Heists haven't bobbled around the ankle with boots (year 3 of same pairs). And hold my stomach in a bit.

Mine are Morrison's mostly, some are Asda, both very comfy and last 2-3 years of heavy use

For me, it's not the gusset as much, the tops of them roll down, and then that means there is less support and they start to sag from the gusset. It's very frustrating. I've had them down to the tops of my thighs when I've been trying to walk somewhere quickly in the past and couldn't stop to drag them back up again.

I don’t know where exactly the problem starts but by the end of it I look like Nora Batty Grin

I bought some Calvin Klein ones from TK Max a couple of years ago, and they are miles better than my other tights. Better feel, better fit and longer lasting.

Yourejokingme - doesn’t look like like Primark are currently doing black

Just been onto Snag website

Are they targeted at the plus+ size market?

They include plus size but go down to small sizes too, they just choose not to only feature slim women in their pictures. Their sizing starts at size 4 and ends at 36. If you go to the size guide it has pictures of women in every size of tights.

@Aridane they are definitely instore. I bought more, reduced to 2.50 last week, so maybe getting ready for Spring stock. I stockpiled!
Newlook did do fantastic opaques, infact my all time favourites, but their larger store near me closed down so I haven't seen any this year.

I bought some opaque black tights last week in Primark and noticed that they're made in Italy 🇮🇹 so they must be good quality.....no? 😊

I bought into the hype on here and bought 3 pairs of Snag tights. They are crap.... ridiculously oversized, and would fit someone 9ft tall, not this shortarse of 5ft 6. I spent the entire day pulling the bloody things up, and they were enormous. I also had really attractive ankle sagging..... Nora Batty eat your heart out. I'd go down several sizes if you do try them, OP. They're no different to M & S which are just as crap sizing but at least they're cheaper.

I think companies get people to post on here, I'm now very wary of recommendations.

John Lewis 40 denier are good. Three for £8.

I have some from Boots that are over 15 years old and still going strong!

I bloody hate the Snag ads and I'm plus size myself

Ah, the Primark lot must no longer be available online, just old stock in store

All I would say is that for the last 4 + years I have bought Autograph Velvet 40 & 60 denier velvet tights and was always pleased with fit and quality BUT thus last 6 months I have had hit and miss exults with them - somecpairs have still been great and other rubbish.

For those of you recommending Woolford -what is the sizing like ? In M&S I buy extra large as I like them to come up to my middle comfortably

Yes, according to reviews, Autograph Velvet have had their formulation changed...

Snag for me (not a rep!), but I am confused about their sizing. I’m quite tall and find them a fab fit but can’t imagine what they’d be like on someone shorter.

First bought them last year and that pair is still going strong and looking good, however the 6 pairs a bought at the end of last year aren’t wearing so well. I still haven’t got over the novelty of not having to wear safety pants and for that reason alone think They’re still worth sticking with.

Snag sound quite good if you’re not High Street sized (in terms of tights)

I have mentioned the Autograph Seam Free with cotton gusset previously.

In general terms, part of the problem with slippage and a saggy crotch (apart from gravity) is that the top of the tights adheres firmly to your body but not fabric. In other words a lot of the slippage is caused by your knickers.

If you have a good quality pair of tights with a decent cotton gusset and no centre seam (the latter is vital), there is no need for knix and the tights stop in place better.

As for feminine health, an extra layer is not going to help. As someone pointed out elsewhere on MN, tights are really knickers with legs in.

My favourite tights are from Boots of all places, I've been wearing them for years!

Interested to know why Snag's advertising doesn't make them make them look good and pics are unflattering? 🤔

Report
Aridane · 11/02/2020 06:42

I think it’s fantastic that Snag advertise with very large women. However, the tights do look aawful with the stretch meaning they are only partly opaque. However, the pictures showing women in particular sizes are helpful
