Black opaque tights (40 / 60 denier) - recommendations?

Aridane · 06/02/2020 07:12

My extensive bundle of work tights after many (very many!) years are now past their best.

So should now replace.

I bought a few replacements from Tesco, M&S and Sainsbury’s - intending to see which worked best. But muddled them up and now can’t tell which are which.

Anyhow, there are some I don’t want to buy again- ie bagged around the ankles, snagged very easily or were sort of patchy in colour. A far cry from my old faithfuls of 5 years +Blush

So any recommendations for decent black opaque thoughts 40 / 60 denier?

I am a shortie (5’2”) and one sized tights - unless on the small side - tend to be too big.

Thanks!

I bought 3 pairs from Snag and really like them. I like them a bit less than when I first had them, when I was positively evangelical about them. Mainly because they have worn around the ankle where I’ve worn them with boots - annoying bobbles.

They are very comfortable though and haven’t lost their shape with washing.

Snag are terrible . Sizing is bizarre - mine are massive! And they wear really badly, laddering and splitting easily.

Cannot bring myself to pay £27.50*+++ for a single pair of Woolford tights Shock

Really just need the equivalent of my old faithful multi pack of M&S tights which lasted 5+ years. But no idea now which ones they were or whether in fact that type is still manufactured (M&S having an annoying habit of changing well rated and popular products 😯 ).

Mixed views on Snag, I see

Another vote for Snag, they last really well in my experience. I tried Heist and they didn’t stay up and laddered. I think it depends on body shape a lot, I have a long body so most tights don’t sit at my waist and then just roll down every time I move. Snag are long in the body, so for people who are short bodied they must come up to their armpits. M&S are very inconsistent with their sizes, some styles are Ok others are hopeless and because they have about fifty million different ever changing types of tights it’s impossible to know if they will fit or not.

Heist are amazing. Perfect. Transformational.

Heist are brilliant, but expensive!

I didn’t like snag, they roll down and the colour is patchy and cheap looking

I think Snag reps must scour boards like this and post recommendations for themselves! I’ve not heard of them outside mumsnet (apart from the constant Facebook ads I now get as I looked them up once.) In my opinion their advertising doesn’t even make them look good! And I’m not being sizeist, I’m not small myself but all the pics they use are very unflattering.

I've used M&S magic wear 60 den for years, they last, shape and stay up, £6 a pair

What Prosecco said. M&s Autograph velvet they come in a shaper version too. The basic M&s look a bit cheap next to them. John Lewis do a nice own brand velvet opaque too.

I like Sainsbury's 30 denier.
Silky or something. Might only be 2 in a pack and more ££ but last and wash well.

That’s right, Prosecco, I’ve been rumbled, I’ve spent a decade on here building a false identity by talking about entry requirements for engineering at university, restaurants in Boston, what to wear to the Open etc just so I can give my opinion on Snag tights!

Heist are comfortable but bobbled terribly around the ankles from wearing with ankle boots. Looked awful if you then wanted to wear with another shoe.
I like Snag, and so far they’ve worn well.
I like M&S sheer tights so I might try their opaques. I stopped using them many moons ago as they were always rolling down

And I’m definitely not a snag rep!

Not saying everyone is! just that there always seems to be a higher than one might expect turnout for them on here every time the question is asked. Just surprises me, particularly when their marketing doesn’t even make them look good (in my humble opinion)

@ProseccoSupernova it's not about looking amazing - it's getting tights that fit no matter what size you are. It's great for people to be able to see size 24/26/28 actually wearing the tights

Manzi from Amazon. I am wearing the ones I bought and wore throughout last winter and they are like new. Plus they properly fit, are supportive in the tummy area, don't sag or bag, and don't move once on. I think they are about £5 a pair.

I tried Snag because someone on here recommended them and I discovered that they never fall down. It was a revelation to me how much that improved the quality of my working day. Standing in front of 200 students doing hard maths on the board while inwardly debating whether or not to hitch up the tights that are slowly descending is no fun. Try them Prosecco you might find you like them, if not, then you can come back and say you don't. They don't suit everyone as PPs have said.

@Aridane you’re lucky! On mumsnet alone there are tons of threads asking how to stop tights falling down! And if you google it you’ll see so many people asking the same and loads of tips and tricks to stop them falling down (such as wearing knickers then tights then another pair of knickers which is a bloody nightmare!).

The M&S bodyshaper ones go right up to your bra (gorgeous!) and don’t fall down

I wish Grin. With most brands of tights when they fall down I’ve tried a size up and a size down incase they’re too big/too small (because advice online goes both ways when you say your tights fall down) and what I’ve noticed is when you go up a size the tights are noticeably longer but not any wider/hardly any bigger in width. I don’t get taller if I eat cake (unfortunately Grin).
