“Wow” dress for date night

Hi all, I’ve got a dinner event next Mon with DH and I’m hoping to use it to, ahem, get our mojo back, shall we say, after DC2.

I’m blonde, 5’5”, pale, quite evenly proportioned and used to be a size 10 but am 8 weeks postpartum (so roughly the same size but now squishy and carrying an extra 5-7kgs...). Trying to kickstart DH into seeing me as a wife instead of just a mother again, and he tends to like classic jewel tones esp blue. I like figure hugging outfits but my bras are currently giving me an unattractive bulge in the middle of my silhouette. I hate having my upper arms uncovered. It’s a semi-formal event, so something classy but sexy...?

I’m in London so can get to most stores, can also go online but it’s already Tues night... Any ideas please?

TL;DR - looking for a classy, sexy dress that doesn’t expose upper arms, for 5 days’ time.

Ooh watching with interest.

I was in oasis earlier and there were some nice ones in there.

Goostacean · 04/02/2020 22:21

Mm, not too keen on the shiny fabric, but thanks for the suggestion! I’ll also check out Oasis.

I was going to suggest a Yondal dress from Dancing Leopard, but I see that style is very similar to the one Smellslikebiscuits posted and just as shiny!
If you can get past the shininess the Yondal dresses are the most flattering style. I have one and have had so many compliments on it.

LaurieFairyCake · 05/02/2020 08:30

Do the Dancing Leopard have any stretch to the 100% polyester - I think some poly is stretchy ? Hmm

Elllllle · 05/02/2020 08:55

Those wrap dresses look quite hard to wear - the slit looks high and wrap tie looks like it would slip in that material.

There is a cobalt blue faux wrap dress on the Closet London site and a couple of gorgeous non-shiny v neck dresses on the Goat website in cobalt and turquoise.

I feel these arent wow enough though so havent bothered linking. Can you do a fitted style? Just asking as I dont think i could at 8 weeks post partum, but I'm similar height, colouring and size to you non post partum

Elllllle · 05/02/2020 09:43

Worth a try on? ghost zebra dress

Or Ted Baker dress

Or this, which is totally off spec but looks very wow (and I might get it for myself!) warehouse faux leather

mrslebon · 05/02/2020 09:44

I'm a similar size to you and I could have done fitted at 8 weeks post partum, but with some clever ruching. Now this dress isn't for everyone but I saw it in Zara yesterday and it's bloody gorge:

www.zara.com/uk/en/draped-faux-leather-dress-p02969058.html?v1=41847345&v2=1445722

The clever ruching will be great around the tummy region. Trinny included it in her shop up the other day and suggested wearing it with dark green tights and metallic heels. I just love that idea! But like I said, it won't be to everyone's taste!

mrslebon · 05/02/2020 09:47

Also, never dress for your husband ('he likes me in classic jewel tones'), dress for yourself!! I can't ever imagine saying 'oh DH likes me in so and so'. I'd be like 'Fuck what he thinks! Grin

BigusBumus · 05/02/2020 10:16

This dress is only £14 available in all sizes!! Paper Dolls

BigusBumus · 05/02/2020 10:21

Or this from Lavish Alice

CallofDoodee · 05/02/2020 10:22

Yes, that was my thought as well - I can't say I have ever given a fuck which tones DH likes me in (although I don't think he has ever given a fuck either 😂)

But, yeah, dress for yourself and what you like.

BigusBumus · 05/02/2020 10:25

I have a Yondal dress and can confirm it has zero give or stretch to it.

BigusBumus · 05/02/2020 10:26

This will hide your boobs and upper arms in an emerald colour from Coast

BigusBumus · 05/02/2020 10:28

I love it when my DH tells me he loves me in something in particular!! He loves me in midi dresses and heels, I love him in pink gingham shirts with cufflinks. Don't see whats wrong in it tbh (as long as you like it too).

ShirleyPhallus · 05/02/2020 10:30

I too have a yondal dress and it has zero stretch to it and is rather smaller on the bust than may be forgiving for breastfeeding boobs. But it is beautiful and gets lots of compliments

I think it’s absolutely fine to dress for your partner on occasion. DP knows that I love classic jeans, shirt tucked in, blazer look and so sometimes he puts it on as he knows I’ll fancy the pants off him like that. Sometimes I put on his “favourite” dress knowing it gets a similar reaction. Absolutely fine to put some effort in for your partner’s benefit in my view.

Elllllle · 05/02/2020 10:40

My dh loves me in bright coral pink. My happy place is head to toe black. When we go on a date night I usually wear something I know he likes.... ditto him for me! If he wanted me in shiny pvc trousers and a bralette however, may be a different story Grin

Miseryisabutterfly · 05/02/2020 10:41

Would this work?

“Wow” dress for date night
Ladyratterley · 05/02/2020 10:47

@LaurieFairyCake there's no stretch in the Dancing Leopard dresses but because they're wrap dresses they can be figure hugging. And the cut is very flattering.
The splits aren't too high on them and the wrap tie's don't slip either!
They're rather overpriced for a polyester dress but they are worth it for the lovely cut. Some of the prints are a bit lurid for my taste but they have a few more muted patterns and shades.

abstractprojection · 05/02/2020 11:08

I would personally go for a pencil skirt with a good balance of structure and stretch. And then a lower cut floaty blouse in a jewel colour.

Scoose · 05/02/2020 11:13

this is nice?

HollowTalk · 05/02/2020 11:26

There's a size 10 left in this Reiss dress.

Elllllle · 05/02/2020 11:47

Elllllle · 05/02/2020 11:47

BigusBumus · 05/02/2020 14:00
