Waitrose baby bottom butter - discontinued. Now what?

user1482949820 · 22/01/2020 18:15

Hi there. I'm one of those people who got to the Waitrose baby bottom butter craze late but then got hooked. For the past few years I haven't used anything else to moisturise my skin but bbb and castor oil. I love it. It doesn't leave me greasy (believe it or not), it's very gentle, no alcohol, no silicon, and it's cheap to boot.

Now Waitrose has discontinued it and I have no idea what to switch to. I have bought a jar of Boots' baby zinc and castor oil cream (it comes in the same jar as the bbb so I thought it could be a knock off) but it's a completely different product.

Any other people here who used bbb on their faces and who have found similar products they are now switching to? I am after a cream (since I already use an oil), something with no alcohol, very rich, and natural (so no to vaseline). Any ideas gratefully received - the other night I went on an 80-mile round trip to bag the last three jars of bbb from one of the few Waitrose stores that still has some in stock (they won't mail them out)... Thank you!

Have a look at the Green People baby range, they used to do something balm-like.

TurduckenFucken · 22/01/2020 18:18

I’m far to scared to google bottom butter.

user1482949820 · 22/01/2020 18:26

Thank you @frugalkitty but I think the 'corresponding' cream is £11.50. The bbb was £3.35...

It's more expensive but I like Celestial by lush. It's not as thick as bottom butter but is very moisturising and natural

frugalkitty · 22/01/2020 18:43

Ultrabland from lush could be an option, although that's not very cheap either.

YouKilledOinker · 22/01/2020 19:37

Try Egyptian Magic. You can often get it cheaper in TK Maxx

morrisseysquif · 22/01/2020 20:16

Why did they do this, I used to love it !

Natalia bottom butter, has tea tree oil in it though.

Their face the day stick is very good

Squiz81 · 22/01/2020 20:36

They've discontinued it??? I didn't know that 😲

LucaFritz · 22/01/2020 20:43

Child's farm might work for you ? I have their nappy cream and moisturizer and the ingredients are all natural

MrsDrudge · 22/01/2020 20:48

I like Aveeno - natural oatmeal, excellent for my very dry skin and also good for patches of very mild eczema I’m prone to.

user1482949820 · 23/01/2020 08:54

Thank you @morrisseysquif ! I have run our of beeswax (I use it to make lip balm) so I just ordered some more and I'll give this recipe a go.

I am thinking of making it too! @user1482949820 !

ShoesJerry · 24/01/2020 09:03

I've been wondering this too as I'm coming to the end of my current supply. It's mostly olive oil, so I think the closest substitute will be something from an olive oil based range. There's a few options on Amazon.

fedup21 · 24/01/2020 09:07

How odd to discontinue it. It was huge ten years ago-what has changed to make it go from really popular to not even worth making??

whiskyremorse · 24/01/2020 09:31

Aveeno has petrolatum as a base so is far from natural, don't let the oats fool you!

user1482949820 · 24/01/2020 13:36

It was discontinued because Waitrose was having issues with its supplier (I know because I contacted Waitrose). Waitrose is currently looking at options but even once it's picked one, this will have to go through testing so I'm guessing we are looking at 6 - 12 months before we get a replacement by Waitrose. In the meantime I'm going to try and make mine as per the recipe link suggested above.

I have made the balm as per the recipe above. However as I didn't have any essential oil I only used extra virgin olive oil and beeswax. It's very good but it smells of beeswax, which isn't to my taste. So next batch I will buy some essential oil and add that as per the original recipe. I recommend you guys try making some too. Extremely simple and effective!

Came to say just make it yourself OP as theres very little in it but olive oils and vanilla fragrance. Shea butter would also work! Glad you've been able to produce something that works.

Not a fan of it personally, it's like a giant tub of lip balm!

averythinline · 26/01/2020 13:40

That recipe looks great.... although have never made anything like that! Where do yo get beeswax from ?

user1482949820 · 26/01/2020 16:43

I got it from Amazon www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01ATDPWDW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8

I only did half the quantities in case I messed up and that gave me nearly two 100ml jars. I put the oil and the beeswax in the microwave in a gravy jug and melted in with increments of 30 seconds. Then I poured it into the jars and let it sit.

I now scoop it out with a little spatula but if you used more oil than the recipe says the consistency would be softer and you could get it out with your fingers.

Thanks am going to give it a go!

LaPampa · 26/01/2020 19:22

Neals yard do a baby butter which is similar

user1482949820 · 27/01/2020 15:04

Yes but Neal's yard is quite pricey. The great thing about the BBB is that it was natural, effective and cheap.
