Should you wear eyeliner after 50?

Looking for ways to update my makeup and keep it looking flattering and fresh. I've always used a black or dark grey eyeliner on my top eyelid, but have been reading that it's not recommended for more mature women as it can make your eyes look smaller.

What do you think?

@CointreauVersial Don’t press too hard! The harder you press, the more the powder sprays off the applicator. Little, soft dabs work best. And tap the excess off the brush thing before you apply.

Thanks, AnuvvaMuvva, will try again!! I did like the effect, just not the major clean-up afterwards.

Well after all the excellent advice on here I have ordered an Urban Decay glide on liner in Stray Dog, a sort of medium brown/grey. Excited to see what it's like.

.... and I ordered it in Stash! Now I just have to work out how to apply it.

The Stash eyeliner is lovely. It's been a revelation to me. I'd love to hear what Stray Dog is like when it arrives.

HepburnKNotA · 14/01/2020 11:09

I'm loving my Stash!! So subtle, just makes me look a fraction more bright-eyed and awake without looking made-up. (I'm pale with mousy hair and small eyes...) Huge thanks to the pp who recommended it!

I’m in 40’s, ditched black eyeliner in favour of grey but still need it. The contrast in my colouring is fading with age and I need something on my eyes or I look washed out and faded

ElspethFlashman · 14/01/2020 15:53

And if anyone gets Mushroom let me know!

I can't justify any of these considering my Clinique Soft Brown is still going strong but I'm seriously sitting on my hands here!

Disfordarkchocolate · 14/01/2020 16:00

I still use black put very softly dotted on the line of my lower lashes and it mostly ends up covered up on the top lid by eyeshadow. I used to have a lovely Clinique green but we don't have any 'nice' makeup in our local shops now.

Alsohuman · 14/01/2020 16:06

You’ll never persuade me to give up liner and I’m 66. Never black though. For anyone on a budget Avon glimmersticks are brilliant and cheap as chips, I’ve got seven or eight in different colours.

50 and wearing very dark grey sparkley (Charlotte Tilbury)

Would not be without it

elspethflashman I read some reviews on Mushroom and looked at the swatches on Pinterest and people say it's too pale and not buildable at all. That's why I went for Stray Dog as it's still taupe, but slightly stronger.

@LaurieFairyCake - can I ask, are you wearing a fine black line as well as your dark grey liner? And thanks for the pic - it's good to see how it should be done.

LaurieFairyCake · 14/01/2020 18:52

No, nothing else. And that's what remains after 10 hours Grin I do use an eye prep thingy (Laura Mercier) - basically an eye primer - or it would smudge on my eye

TheYearOfTheDog · 14/01/2020 19:07

I ordered inglot gel eyeliner in shade 94 and it is just shimmery eyeshadow. Not suitable for eyeliner at all.

Might take a look at stray dog.

peaceanddove · 15/01/2020 10:42

Tried Stray Dog this morning and I love it x

Ooh thanks for the feedback. How dark is it?

beautifulstranger101 · 16/01/2020 19:17

Of course. I dont understand these stupid "rules". Wear what looks good on you, it doesnt matter what your age is- if something looks good, then it looks good. Its not going to stop looking good at the stroke of midnight on a certain birthday.

ElspethFlashman · 17/01/2020 14:20

So I realised by holding it up to the light that my Clinique Soft Brown is on its last centimeter so yay an excuse to try on of these out!

I went into Debenhams and had a good look. Stash is beeeyooootiful in person but sadly too greenish for my eye colour. I couldn't find Stray Dog and when I asked the assistant, she insisted it didn't exist in eyeliner form? Just eyeshadow?? Wierd. So I got Mushroom.

Attached is a pic of the Clinique one and Mushroom, couple of swipes each. Honestly there's very little between them except Mushroom is slightly greyer and has a sheen. I'm happy as I didn't want it to be darker really. It's definitely buildable though.

I also had a fiver on my Debenhams card so got it cheaper!
