Should you wear eyeliner after 50?

Looking for ways to update my makeup and keep it looking flattering and fresh. I've always used a black or dark grey eyeliner on my top eyelid, but have been reading that it's not recommended for more mature women as it can make your eyes look smaller.

What do you think?

I am now 60 and need definition around my eyes. Use any colour pencil or liquid but mainly just to upper eye. Sometimes use darker shadow there instead/as well as.

My urban decay Stash (khaki/gold) has just arrived and I’ve tried it. I look fabulous! (Natch). I’m 43.

Sooverthemill · 08/01/2020 13:17

I'm 61 and have never worn it. Even when I wore makeup daily I didn't. But no reason why you can't it it's well applied and not in a 'dated' style

lindyloo57 · 08/01/2020 13:45

My Kryolan has just arrived, will try it tomorrow and let you know if it lasted on me.

Oly4 · 08/01/2020 14:10

My go-too is Urban Decay Mildew. A fabulous green and stays put.
I’m 43

bohemia14 · 08/01/2020 21:19

My Urban Decay Stash arrived today. It's a revelation - not only is the colour gorgeous but I love the texture. After years of black or brown eyeliner I'm an immediate convert. I shall look at their other colours.

Thanks very much to the OP for starting this thread!

Oly4 · 09/01/2020 22:28

Yes urban decay eyeliners are the best by miles!

definitelyshouldknowbetter · 09/01/2020 22:54

I need this UD eyeliner in my life, I’ve been looking for a goldy green liner for ages and none of the ones I’ve tried have been quite right.
I love Clinique quick liner in smoky brown normally, it’s not actually brown though really but gives a soft definition

AnuvvaMuvva · 09/01/2020 23:06

I'm late (very late) 40s and I've always worn eyeliner, since being a Goth in my teens.

I recently discovered an amazing new eyeliner, by No7, that gives a soft smoky look. It's like eyeshadow but goes on with a clever eyeliner-type applicator. It's fab!

TheYearOfTheDog · 09/01/2020 23:46

Is it powdery?

Fabellini · 09/01/2020 23:57

I don’t use an eyeliner, but like a pp, I use a dark eyeshadow (a sort of auberginey colour) applied with an angled brush right in at the lash line of my eyelid. It smudges a little over the course of the day, it in a deliberate smokey eye kind of way. It looks much softer, and I think it suits me better than eyeliner used to.

Pinkarsedfly · 10/01/2020 08:20

My UD Stash arrived yesterday. It’s the bomb. Bloody gorgeous.

AutumnRose1 · 10/01/2020 12:42

The poster who had it tattooed on....I guess you mean semi permanent

I thought about it but it looks painful...

AnuvvaMuvva · 10/01/2020 14:47

@theyearofthedog Yes, but not so that it falls off all over your face. It's really good stuff.

DuchessDumbarton · 10/01/2020 16:04

I love my eyeliner.
And loathe those "rules".... never wear short skirts/long hair/ eyeliner/ boho/ after 30/40/50.

I'm going to be a long time dead...so I'm going to make the most of it while I'm here.

Saying that.... anyone got a good online tutorial for applying liner +/- shadow on older hooded eyebrows?

TheYearOfTheDog · 10/01/2020 19:23

Angie hot n flashy
Fabulous at fifty

ComeBackPeterComeBackPaul · 10/01/2020 22:04

Any chance any of you have any photos - I really am an arse at eye make up and don't properly know how to wear eyeliner. (52 and just getting into make up!)

notapizzaeater · 10/01/2020 23:12

@AutumnRose1 no it actually wasn't that bad, they put a numbing liquid on, put it this way when it fades (and I'm 5 years in) I will have it done again.

AutumnRose1 · 10/01/2020 23:18

notapizzaeater thank you

How long did it take and were your eyelids sore?

lindyloo57 · 11/01/2020 13:23

The kryolan eye liner, it goes on lovely, but when my eyes run in the wind it runs down my face,

AutumnRose1 · 11/01/2020 13:37

I'm off out and it's horribly windy outside....I too would end up with eyeliner running everywhere if I put it on today.

notapizzaeater · 11/01/2020 16:14

@AutumnRose1 it took 2 sessions a couple of weeks apart, each one took about an hour. Fir the first week - 10 days its was much heavier looking than the final result but once the 'scabs' (you couldn't see they where scabs as they looked liked heavy eyeliner ) fell off it was perfectly fine. I didn't do anything different, just carried in as normal, in fact one day I went straight to work.

NightsOfCabiria · 11/01/2020 17:58

I think it entirely depends on your colouring. If you’re brunette, it may be ok but probably wont be if youre a red head or blonde (naturally).

I like powder liner best, well blended, in grey, navy or taupe. With a lighter colour to line the lower lash line.

AutumnRose1 · 11/01/2020 17:59

notapizzaeater thank you.

the word "scab" has made me decide not to! Grin

CointreauVersial · 12/01/2020 14:38

@AnuvvaMuvva - I think I have that No7 powder eyeliner, but I gave up on it, because I find it impossible to apply without showering my cheekbones in grey powder. What's the secret??
