Where should I shop? Work knitwear..

I only shop online.

I am trying to find good quality but machine washable smart black or navy knitwear for work.

I like crew or high v necks. Close fitting so I can wear under a suit jacket when needed, and long enough to be over my hips, rather than near my waist. Must be full long sleeves - I'm skinny so look ridiculous in 3/4 sleeves.

It's really hard!

I usually do all my shopping in Banana Republic (but they've got nothing suitable at the moment), Hobbs (ditto) and Boden (but the quality has gone downhill significantly recently so I've given up on them).

I dabble with Phase Eight, various John Lewis options and M&S occasionally but always disappointed and they are not quite me.

I don't have much shape beyond "stick" so Next and the like too shapeless.

I would love suggestions as to where else I should look. I feel as if it shouldn't be this hard!! The world looks stylish and I look a scruff!

Have you tried Uniqlo? I have a navy and a charcoal grey merino wool v neck from there and they wash and wear very well. You might need to size up as they come up small, but if you’re after tight fitting it should be okay

PiedImperial · 31/12/2019 20:44

I was about to say Uniqlo, but Sydney has beaten me to it!

Their merino knitwear is lovely, comes in a huge range of colours (and black and navy) and machine washes really well. And is very reasonably priced!

chenilleblanket · 31/12/2019 20:47

What about Warehouse/Oasis?

Fridaysgirl · 31/12/2019 21:21

Pure Collection

HelloDulling · 31/12/2019 21:23

Uniqlo! Their merino crew necks are my work staples Nov-April.

Bluegrasstrail · 31/12/2019 21:33

Definitely try Uniqlo!! Can add my recommendation to the list. Have lots of their workwear and find it washes really well.

bingohandjob · 31/12/2019 22:26

Uniqlo all the way - good quality classic basics.

TwinNumberThree · 01/01/2020 10:26

Looks like uniqlo it just be!

Never tried them and wouldn't have thought of them so thanks very much!

I agree with uniqlo but have also had some great merino buys in tkmaxx

peachypetite · 01/01/2020 11:39

Random but Wallis do nice knitwear.

TwinNumberThree · 01/01/2020 15:18

Thanks @peachypetite I've just had a look at Wallis but they don't seem to do anything that's plain. I couldn't wear something with stripes or buttons for work unfortunately. I'm considered a scruff in not wearing Reiss every day (like everyone else!); embellished jumpers would send them over the edge!

Unfortunately Uniqglo has a dreadful website. Very buggy on small devices. It bounces the user around and has a million irritating popups. So, I'd go to a store to purchase if you can be bothered.

TwinNumberThree · 01/01/2020 17:44

@DianaT1969 I'm about 200 miles from a store! 😆

I'll give the website a go. When you don't go to shops (I just don't enjoy it so don't do it) you get used to rubbish websites.

I find Uniqlo jumpers are quite short but I do have a large bust and long back

TheCazaletCousins · 02/01/2020 00:26

John Smedley. Though you may have to hold your nose, given they knitted Boris Johnson a Brexit scarfHmm

SuePerb · 02/01/2020 00:36

Whistles used to have some tight fitting knitwear - not sure if it does anymore. Also Me&Em>

Have you tried Jigsaw? I think they do some too. And cos too?

yougotanuglyboatrace · 02/01/2020 07:47

What is a size 12-14 in uniqlo please?

SydneyCarton · 02/01/2020 13:03

I’m a 12-14 and I bought Large in the merino crew neck, although this does give a fairly close fit. If I bought it again I’d get XL for a more relaxed fit

Redyellowpink · 02/01/2020 15:50

Gap washable merino wool crew neck jumpers are fab. I have them in black, grey and navy

TwinNumberThree · 02/01/2020 18:21

@Redyellowpink Are the Gap ones quite long? I'm a bit worried (looking at the website photos of the models) that the uniqlo ones will be short.

DatsunCogs · 02/01/2020 18:22

Cos wool t shirts are great, quite thin but very fitted, and long, with long sleeves despite the name

hallamoo · 02/01/2020 18:25

Zara.

7Days · 02/01/2020 18:26

If you have quite a straight figure you could look at menswear.
Often the mens stuff is much more sturdy than the womens even in the same shop.

Oly4 · 02/01/2020 18:41

Also agree that Gap merino is good, long enough for me but I’m only 5ft5

TwinNumberThree · 02/01/2020 18:42

@7Days I just find menswear a bit shapeless. I need some structure/ fitting to create a shape (when if the shape is straight up and down!) or I look like I'm wearing a paper bag!
