DIOR nail varnish is absolutely shit!

Splashed out £22 on a DIOR nail varnish for my hols, hoping spending extra would ensure that it had staying power.

Nope. 3 coats and it was chipped in under 24 hours.

I'm livid!

Chanel is the same.

Honeybee85 · 28/12/2019 14:53

Unfortunately a naice pricetag doesn’t always mean good quality.

Personally I wouldn’t spend a lot of money on Dior, Chanel etc nailpolishes. You can get Essie, OPI etc for a much lower price and quality is very good. I always keep in mind that when you wear designer make up products, unlike clothes, bags, nobody will see an obvious brand name/label on your face, nails etc Smile.

overtheseagull · 28/12/2019 14:53

Yep, really high end brands of nail varnish are total shite. You're better off with Essie or other mid-range brands.

tobee · 28/12/2019 14:58

My experience is that companies that make mostly just nail varnish are far better than the big "houses" that do couture, skin care, make up etc.

Honeybee85 · 28/12/2019 15:06

@tobee you’re completely right about this.
Often you just pay for the designers name.

When I bought a lot of high end skincare (now sticking to The Ordinairy and other less fancy but effective brands) sales lady in the department store has told me this. She said brands like Dior, Chanel etc do nice skincare but you pay mostly for the name and if you want something that really works, the real skincare brands like Estee Lauder are the best. She also said American brands deliver claimed results better then European ones.
Though I must say that many European fashion houses like Dior and Chanel make fantastic perfumes.

Ninkanink · 28/12/2019 15:10

Next time get a gel manicure. It’ll stay perfect for two weeks. I pay £25 for mine so only a few more pounds.

Legallybleachblonde · 28/12/2019 15:19

BarryM gel polishes are fab and about £4! They last too and have a great pigment.

TheDevilWearsPantsuits · 28/12/2019 15:30

Yep, really high end brands of nail varnish are total shite.

Christian Louboutin ones come to mind immediately!

Ididit2019 · 28/12/2019 17:55

Barry m have the best staying power out of all the ones I've tested.

Popuppippa · 28/12/2019 17:57

Agreed. And the brushes are terrible - really thin.

I now buy cheap as chips Rimmel with the wide brush unless there's a very specific colour I want. It all looks the same under a good top coat.

3luckystars · 28/12/2019 18:04

I am no help with the nail varnish but saw this today, called 'English Graffiti it its finest'

DIOR nail varnish is absolutely shit!
Michaelbaubles · 28/12/2019 18:06

My favourite nail varnish is Essence Gel Effect - £1.60 from Wilko and goes on best, lasts amazingly and has great coverage. Anything that costs more is never as good.

Popuppippa · 28/12/2019 18:06

@3luckystars LOL!

3luckystars · 28/12/2019 18:08

I know!! I cannot stop laughing at it all day.

AlessandraBumbrosio · 28/12/2019 18:10

I bought diorglow nail varnish at the recommendatiins of S&B. Absolute shit. Sally hansen would have been better.

Miniloso · 28/12/2019 18:15

Seriously, take it back. I do if expensive stuff doesn’t work. It’s a rip off otherwise.

Redtartanshoes · 28/12/2019 18:17

Barry M. Seriously. Usually 3 for 2 in boots

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/12/2019 18:19

Essence is amazing especially with Boots No7 top coat on top, don't wait for it to dry ,straight on and dries like rick in seconds.

Spied · 28/12/2019 18:20

Agree with Barry M. Boots Natural Collection are also great. Last 7+ days easily. As do pound shop ones ( but colours are a bit drab I find)

BacktoMA · 28/12/2019 18:20

All nail varnish is shit, needs to be gel if you want staying power.

RamonaFlower · 28/12/2019 18:20

Agree. And so is Chanel. The best I've found is Avon or Barry M.

Fairylea · 28/12/2019 18:26

Expensive ones are still as shit as many of the cheaper ones. I used to work for Clinique and Chanel and we used to wear Rimmel and say it was whatever brand we worked for as it was better! Blush

Personally I find two coats of Sally Hansen hard as nails, then 2 coats of Barry M gelly nails and then a coat of serche cute top coat the best combo. Lasts easily a week with no chips. Nails grow stronger and longer too.

PersonalClown · 28/12/2019 18:27

It also might be lack of prep.
A good base coat and top coat should give you more time.
I use a cleaner to remove all oils from the nail, 2 coats of different treatments, a peel off base coat, colour then a decent top coat.

My nails then last a week with minimal wear on the tips and I work in a warehouse!

Also, try some independents. Not as expensive as you think and amazing colours.

Jessica is pretty good imo

orchidsarebeautiful · 28/12/2019 19:11

Disappointing true. The big names on the make up counters generally have poor nail vanish.

Buy from a brand that only do nail vanish or that specialise in nail varnish.
