Anyone having problems with Nice n Easy box dyes over the last few weeks?

I’ve been using this stuff for as long as I can remember and it has always worked ok. My hair is naturally grey/mousey and i dye it blonde. I’ve tried other makes such as garnier and L’Oréal but these tend to look lovely at first but wash out over a few weeks whereas the Nice n Easy one is the only one I have found that seems to stick to my hair permanently.
About a month ago I dyed my roots in the usual way but they turned a whiteish colour. It looked as though the mixture had stripped my natural colour away but the blonde dye hadn’t absorbed into my hair. My initial thought was that I hadn’t shook the mixture properly so I tried again, shaking thoroughly, but the same thing happened again. I tried a third time and didn’t shampoo my hair afterwards in case that was washing the colour away but the roots are still white.
I’ve tried contacting clairol to see if they have changed the formula over the past month or two but they haven’t responded.
Has anyone had this problem or any idea why it has happened? I’ve been using this stuff for well over 10 years with no issues. If not could you recommend an alternative box dye that permanently works on stubborn greys? Thank you

Yes! It left me with a white patch on the side of my temple, much bigger than the grey strands that were there.

ShinyNewNameTimeAgain · 15/12/2019 20:44

Me too! I have Mousehole/ greyish hair which I dye blonde every 4-6 weeks. Always used the same light blonde Nice n Easy. Lat month and again yesterday when I did it it just hasn’t lightened as much as before and I’m left which orange roots. Apart from they grey hairs which have gone completely white. It looks bloody awful.

No sign on the box of new/ different ingredients which is frustrating. I know you’re supposed to do a strand test each time but even though I’ve had a reaction to a different brand of hair dye before I don’t with this as I use so regularly.

TheReluctantCountess · 15/12/2019 20:48

Yes, my hair went a gingery colour rather than the light brown it was meant to be.

Itis6oclocksomewhere · 15/12/2019 21:05

Yes! I bought my normal dye which usually turns my hair a brown with hint of red. Can't remember the exact one, but it covers the grey well and isn't too dissimilar from my actual colour.
Used it a few weeks ago and it went badly wrong. My hair turned mainly black apart from a few patches that didn't take at all. It looked bloody awful.
I've tried contacting Clairol, but no response.

CoolShoeshine · 16/12/2019 06:30

That’s interesting - they’ve definitely changed the product in some way then if I’m not the only one affected. I’m going to try ringing them today to see what’s going on. I’m pretty annoyed that I’ve bought 3 dud boxes already!
The thing worrying me is that whenever I google then best box dyes for grey coverage nice and easy is the one that always gets mentioned!

Please let us know how you get on. I noticed the same when googling about box dyes. Home kits are good for me as I struggle to fit in hairdresser appointments and it saves me money!

HuggedTheRedwoods · 16/12/2019 09:46

Its a while since I used this but only bought a box yesterday (9A/light ash) so just checked and the box does say 'New & Improved' in fairly small capitals in the top corner.

Another line in very small print at the bottom at the back of the box says 'On grey hair, colour appears lighter than non-grey for a highlighted effect' - which sounds odd for those wanting to blend in a few greys, not hightlight them.

Bit worried about using it now.

ShinyNewNameTimeAgain · 16/12/2019 09:49

Look at what it’s done to my hair! I didn’t realise that as well as the orange roots I had a big white streak until I tied my hair back this morning! I’m going to have to go to the hairdressers to get it sorted I think. So weird as I’ve always used this same colour to touch up my roots and it’s never been an issue before.

Gosh, just looked online and see some really bad reviews on Trust Pilot and Superdrug. I think I'll try taking mine back (haven't opened box or anything and only bought yesterday so hopefully it wont be an issue - will bookmark review links on my phone to show them why I'm returning!).

This is awful, thanks so much @CoolShoeshine for highlighting this (no pun intended!).

Goingslightlycrazy1 · 16/12/2019 10:05

Was about to buy one today but maybe I’ll try another brand!!

MrsRoyCropper · 16/12/2019 10:10

Yes same here, I’ve used it for about ten years as I have quite a lot of grey and it’s always worked well. As I’ve had the same issues as previous posters I switched to L’Oréal preference but that doesn’t provide the coverage that nice and easy used to. I was planning to scrap box dye and resign myself to having my hair coloured at a salon as the formulas are just not cutting it at the moment.

CoolShoeshine · 16/12/2019 17:51

Omg I’ve just read the trust pilot reviews and they are dire! This must have been going on for longer than I’d realised, it’s only affected me in the last month or two. Apparently it’s since they changed the colour developer from a small blue bottle into a tube.
I’m quite worried now because some people are complaining that their hair is falling out and I’ve already done my roots 3 times.
It used to look so lovely in the past, lots of different tones. People were often surprised when I said that I dyed my own hair!
Whatever am I going to do now?? Confused

This happened to me. I've been using the same box number for over ten years. It's a mid brown dye that covers grey and looks near to my natural colour.
I used it a month or so ago and I ended up with a big black patch that I didn't notice until I tied my hair back.
I have used other dyes to try to correct it but the black patch is there to stay. I won't use it again.

CoolShoeshine · 16/12/2019 21:37

It seems from the reviews that anyone using dark blonde or brown shades are having their hair turned near black, whilst those dyeing mid to light blonde are going white.
Surely the product can’t last much longer if this keeps happening!
I’ve had no luck in contacting the company today.
Any ideas what dye would be good for me to try next?

I ended up with two large areas of black patches on either side of head. Had been using the dye for years.
It looked terrible.
Made a big decision to stop dyeing my hair & let the grey come through.Took 18 months & I'm pleased I've done it.
Will never dye again. It's liberating!

Goingslightlycrazy1 · 17/12/2019 07:08

Does anyone have advice for what other box dyes are any good?

youvegottobekidding · 17/12/2019 10:53

I haven’t used the permanent nice & easy for this very reason, since they changed the box/formula, must of been around a year ago at a guess, I read all the reviews & nearly all were saying how the results had turned out bad, so I only use their no ammonia 24 wash ones now. You can still get the older nice & easy permanent box dyes in b&m (not all shades) and I think I’ve seen some in home bargains. I hate it when company’s mess with formulas as there was nothing wrong with old one!

jalopy · 17/12/2019 13:21

Forgot to mention, I never used the permanent dyes, just the ammonia-free 24 wash ones. Still ended up with the unsightly browny/black block of colour on my light brown hair.

peoplearepeople · 17/12/2019 15:56

I used the permanent nice n easy in 5a for years. It was perfect for me. Never looked blocky, lots of different tones and just looked lovely and natural. It was the only dye I had found that didn't end up pulling warm tones in my hair as well.
I had to stop using it last year when they changed the formula for the new and improved one. The colour was patchy and never right anymore, and the dye was a horrible texture and stained the skin terribly. I hate that they messed with something that didn't need fixing!
I switched to majirel for a while which I liked but still wasn't as great a colour match as the nice n easy was.
I've switched back to baq henna now like I used to use years ago for bringing colour and richness to my hair. It's more of a faff but think my hair appreciates that it's less damaging.

CoolShoeshine · 17/12/2019 16:39

Weirdly though my colour was ok after they changed the formula a year or two ago. It’s just been the last few times that I’ve coloured my hair that I’ve had problems (I usually colour it every 4 weeks or so). Going to check out majirel in more detail but I’m a bit scared of that as it seems more complicated than a box dye.

Yeah I'm not impressed either. And I've used it for 20 years. Bought a dark blonde which came out straight up brown. Quite a shock! And it's gone all dribbly and stained my forehead. I'm not buying it any more.

I'm switching to Garnier as my blonde co-worker uses it and her hair looks lovely and shiny.

Deathraystare · 28/12/2019 10:26

Oh Gosh! Thanks for the warning. I was going to buy Nice and Easy but will buy something else. Used it in the past so as you say must have changed the formula (obvs not for the best either!)

Goawayquickly · 28/12/2019 10:47

I’ve used it for years and did mine about ten days ago and now have orange patches which has never happened before. I’m not sure what to try next.

RIBlue · 28/12/2019 11:13

I’ve stopped using Nice and Easy and now use Olia instead. You can flip your hair forward over your face to do the back sections without crying/ choking on the fumes which makes me think it’s probably slightly better for me and my hair!

MargotLovedTom1 · 28/12/2019 11:19

I use L'oreal Excellence and never have any issues. I buy mid brown and not blonde though so can't vouch for lighter colours.
