Keratosis Polaris please help

My dd is 16 And has Keratosis Polaris on her face and arms. She is so upset about it and at times it’s very uncomfortable and the rash is bright red. A dermatologist told us it will just go and nothing will help.
Does anyone have any recommendations. She is so self conscious about it.

(Gentle) Exfoliation and exfoliating acids like salicylic and lactic. Clinique Total Turnaround is good.

RuggyPeg · 07/12/2019 08:14

Ameliorate.

Goslowlysideways · 07/12/2019 08:23

@LordEmsworth I’ll get some thank you.
@Ruggypeg thank you I’ll google it.

KP skin is actually sensitive skin I find and lots of the stuff with urea and acids in that are recommended can make it look red and even more agitated. You also need a lot of product and ameliorate was very expensive and didn’t do much.

Best scrub is table salt mixed with a carrier oil like sweet almond (you can buy on Amazon) - make a loose scrub up, apply to damp skin and soak off in a hot bath. Scrubs with nut shell and other exfoliates will be too abrasive. Also don’t use rock or sea salt flakes - lesson learned by me there!

Moisturiser - best to use something light that you can use a lot of. Put on after the bath.

But that said, Soap and glory sugar crush lotion from boots is good - lasts ages . But it has fruit acids in so I wouldn’t put it on my face or use in summer on my body if I was going to expose a lot of skin. Acids make skin uv vulnerable.

For her face, sorry never had it in my face, I would try a balm cleanser or something non foaming and a good moisturiser.

Ameliorate is brilliant

AmethystMoonShine · 07/12/2019 09:35

I’ve been using Ameliorate lotion for 6 months now and my upper arms are the best they’ve looked in 20 years. Still not ‘perfect’ but a significant difference. I’m now happy to have my upper arms exposed.
Just a little blob of lotion after my morning shower. I’m only halfway through my second tube (large size).
I might not use it on my face though?

Goslowlysideways · 07/12/2019 10:03

Thanks for all the replies. The problem is it seems unusual for it to be on the face. Im hoping she just grows out of it soon.

It might be worth trying cod liver oil capsules for a couple of months. Ameliorate is supposed to be brilliant for the body.

Korean exfoliating mitts are very good and I have been using Gloves in a Bottle on my weather sensitive face, it needs a bit of explanation: it's a silicon based shielding lotion that I originally bought because DS2 developed cracked dry skin on his knuckles, it doesn't add moisture but forms a layer on the skin that stops moisture escaping. I ended up trying it my hands then face, it makes my skin feel great and also works well for me as a make up primer under mineral make up. I am planning to use it on my feet and upper arms next to continue the experiment. I suspect it would work well on KP, I've ordered a large bottle so DS3 can try it on his KP. If you want to try a more traditional moisturiser, chose one with a high percentage of Urea in it, typically found in cream for dry feet/heels.
Good luck, DS3 had KO all over his arms and legs but it is less extensive now so it could get better with age

magicstar1 · 07/12/2019 10:27

I started using almond shower oil from L’Occitane and my arms cleared up within days. Give it a go...it’s not harsh at all, and is a good place to start.

WobblyLady · 07/12/2019 10:37

I don't put any cream on my arms but started giving them a very brisk rub with a very hard towel after every shower and it cleared up brilliantly

TheCanterburyWhales · 07/12/2019 10:57

Ameliorate has changed dd's life.
She also uses the Korean mitt cloths (Amazon) and her skin has been transformed.
Avene also do a cream but she says the Ameliorate is better.

Breathlessness · 07/12/2019 12:41

LookFantastic.com have 20% off selected products with the code LF20 at the moment. They have Ameliorate lotion and other products included in that. They also have a ‘Christmas Kit’ www.lookfantastic.com/ameliorate-christmas-kit/12105392.html with a selection of products in smaller sizes.

chocolatespiders · 07/12/2019 12:43

I remember a thread on here that recommended soap and glory scrub your nose in it.

Hope you find something that helps.

CuckooCuckooClock · 07/12/2019 17:00

I found nivea soft (white tub) pretty effective on my upper arms in the summer.

LarryUnderwood · 07/12/2019 17:18

I had it badly on my face, arms, bum and thighs from childhood. I dont have it on face anymore but still everywhere else (am in my 40s). Best thing I have ever found is korean Italy towels (the green ones, can buy from amazon). Soak in bath for 20 mins then scrub scrub scrub (not on face though). Light body oil after (eg almond oil). 2-3 times a week. Moisturoser every day. Can do in shower too but it's much more effective once you've soaked for a while. For face - a good quality exfoliant plus decent face oil for night time. And exposure to sun is so helpful. Winter is the w0rst for KP. It does get better with age- my skin was like sandpaper in my teens and now its softer even when its bumpy.

Sarcelle · 07/12/2019 17:44

I used to have this but it goes with age. Not much help for your young DD though. I found starflower capsules great for my skin. When I was in my teens I had a rash permanently on jaw line. Doctors gave me steroid creams. One day I read that a rash along jawline was a sign of a lack of fatty acids in the body and they recommended 1000mg of starflower oils everyday. Within a few days of taking it my rash disappeared. I thought I had it for life.

Goslowlysideways · 07/12/2019 18:01

I’ve just checked this quickly and can’t believe all the lovely replies. I’ll have a proper look when I get home. Thank you so so much for all your help I really appreciate it.

Amlactin lotion was pretty life changing for me. Dry painful bumpy KP skin to smooth plump glowy skin and lots of compliments.

And completely randomly, Sanctuary body wash keeps my face smooth and nice. Every other shower gel seems to make it worse. Just looking at the ingredients it has castor oil in it so its probably that.

user1457741482 · 07/12/2019 19:03

I have this on my face too (all over my cheeks) and was similar age to your daughter. It can be treated effectively. Dermatologist prescribed Quinoderm followed by Retin A it and it went down over 6 months. My skin gets worse after a cold, tiredness etc. I use Cetraben to wash and now prescribed Tretonin gel but only need to use now and then asit isn't noticeable now but was extremely red at the time.

Auldspinster · 07/12/2019 21:34

Eucerin 10% urea lotion is good.

Khione · 07/12/2019 21:40

I found mine improved after taking vitamin D (4000 iunits daily)

Beamur · 07/12/2019 21:44

I have this, as did my Mum and the GP prescribed a cream for it. I don't have it now to any appreciable degree.
The cream needs to have a certain acid in it to work, normal moisturiser and scrubs are ineffective. Hope the suggestions on here help as it's not great if you're feeling self conscious about it.

Grafittiqueen · 07/12/2019 21:46

Korean wash cloths have been amazing for my keratosis pilaris

Louise97 · 07/12/2019 21:54

Had the same at her age!! Still have it now at 22. I stopped caring around the age of 18 when I started using fake tan/sunbeds and I couldn't see the little dots.

Although I've been using retinol oil from the face theory. Retin C scar oil it's called I think? Use it on my face each night (thick consistency) but I use that and it seems to calm my redness down a lot.

Give that a try ! :))))
