Do people tell you you're pretty?

Probably a very shallow post, but here goes…
Background - people used to tell me I was pretty when I was younger. Then I got married, had kids, got depressed and I admit I "let myself go" and put on 4 stone.
I'm now 49, and am getting my life back on track. I've lost 2 stone, started face care routine again etc and am generally much happier.
I think I look pretty good, especially for my age Grin. (I'm still a bit overweight by 1 stone though)
Lots of people comment on how nice my hair is, but no one actually says I look nice.

If you're pretty, do people still tell you?

I'm 38 and I get told it quite a lot.

Northernsoullover · 10/11/2019 20:37

47 and occasionally. I don't think I look to bad Wink

Northernsoullover · 10/11/2019 20:37

*too

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 10/11/2019 20:38

I'm in my forties and only DH, my toddler and my lovely friends tell me I look pretty Smile I used to be told all the time in my late teens / twenties

OverByYer · 10/11/2019 20:39

I’m 48 and never been told I look pretty

Ohyesiam · 10/11/2019 20:41

I’m 53 and I have had friends and acquaintances say I look radiant and fantastic recently. Which is good, but not specifically the word pretty.
To me pretty is a young woman/ girl/ child thing maybe?

FourQuarters · 10/11/2019 20:41

I’d never tell someone over the age of about ten they look ‘pretty’ — it’s a frilly, infantilising kind of word to me. I do, however, frequently compliment other women on their appearance.

cushioncovers · 10/11/2019 20:43

In my 20's yes but not since.

Isbutteracarb · 10/11/2019 20:45

I've never really been told I look pretty, I've heard "you look great" and things like that but then I probably wouldn't really call someone pretty to their face, would say "you're looking great/fab/well" or something along those lines.

Ilovethekitties · 10/11/2019 20:45

I'm 18 stone and get told I'm pretty all of the time. I'm confident and always leave the house very presentable. I am 28.

wishiwasinbarbados · 10/11/2019 20:52

ok. So pretty is mainly for the youngsters then.
I guess as I'm looking to start dating again I'm looking for reassurance as to where I kind of 'fit' if that makes sense.

I do think the word pretty is something people say to kids and maybe younger women. But I don't see why an older woman couldn't be pretty. It's just quite a specific description imo. Someone pretty is almost doll like in my imagination. Someone beautiful can be any age and any type. I think more people are beautiful than our pretty over the age of about 35.

PS: I am 36 and I wasn't pretty to begin with Halloween Grin! Fingers crossed I'm still potentially beautiful...at least to some people.

mustangsly · 10/11/2019 21:16

I'm 35 and get told I'm pretty. Not every day by any means, but often enough. Grin

BeatriceTheBeast · 10/11/2019 21:18

Than are pretty*

BeatriceTheBeast · 10/11/2019 21:21

I think Jane Seymour is an older, pretty woman. Also Felicity Kendall. There are definitely older women who are 'pretty', but they are a certain type I think.

EdWinchester · 10/11/2019 21:22

I am 49 too. I will admit I do get told I am 'good looking' and 'attractive' and sometimes even, 'beautiful' but I can't remember being called pretty recently. I think it's a word reserved for the young.

It's all a bit daft really.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 10/11/2019 21:25

I have never ever been told I am pretty - as a young girl my mum actually said I wasn’t pretty, but I was “striking”. That was horrible at the time, but now in my mid-40s I am often told I am attractive, striking, stylish etc.

HotSince82 · 10/11/2019 21:27

My DH iften tells me I'm a 'pretty woman' Grin
I'm often described as pretty even at thirty six, although I do have generically pretty features, large eyes, cupids bow lips, high cheekbones, long curly hair etc.
Never been called beautiful though!

Waitingforadulthood · 10/11/2019 21:28

I'm often called pretty. I'm 35. I don't like it. I was once told in exasperating detail, that you can be beaut, striking, sexy or pretty. I came away knowing I'm pretty and that left me feeling wanting.

Greenteandchives · 10/11/2019 21:28

Yes, my DH. Every day. I am in my 60s. He believes it. Me not so much. 😀

Delatron · 10/11/2019 21:32

I used to quite a bit. Hairdresser the other day said ‘ you have a pretty face’ now he may have just said that to every one but made me realise it’s been a while since I heard that (43).

Agree that it’s a certain look? Some people are beautiful rather than pretty or striking rather then pretty. Pretty I think signifies delicate, youthful features? Yes Jane Seymour is a good example of a ‘pretty’ older woman. The more I write it the more ridiculous it sounds though!!

siriusblackthemischieviouscat · 10/11/2019 21:36

I do which I can't see. Im a size 22 so massive but certain people tell me I'm pretty or beautiful. I wonder what I would look like if I lost a lot of weight?

BlackSwan · 10/11/2019 21:41

My young son tells me I'm pretty. Actually, he tells my I'm beautiful - and I take that as the greatest compliment.

ahhgoongoongoonhaveacupoftea · 10/11/2019 21:41

😂 ds tells me I'm beautiful. I'm not( I'm rather ugly really) but it's nice to be complimented by your young son.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 10/11/2019 21:48

Pretty is definitely not my adjective! Never was, even when younger. Ah well.
