Embarrassingly obvious fake?

WillowySnicket · 07/11/2019 20:53

Inspired by kind and brilliant posters on another thread, I wondered if I could borrow some collective eyes (and constructive feedback!)

I bought a lovely leather handbag in a charity shop a few years ago for about £10. Used it a bit but then felt like it was really good, thick, heavy quality and wanted to check it wasn't anything special. A friend asked if it was a real mulberry? To which I went ????? I have done some googling and, while it looks like a reasonable knock off, the serial number is a known fake.

Now I'm too embarrassed to use it in case people can just glance and think "how SAD that person is with their awful obvious fake!"

So. Would you be so kind as to tell me whether it looks cringey try hard obvious fake or reasonable knock off/I can get away with using?! Thanks!

You're waaaaaaay overthinking this. It just looks like a normal bag. Nobody is going to look and think "ooh that's a [brand name] bag", let alone consider if it's a genuine or not. People do not give that much of a toss about your accessories.

TwattingDog · 07/11/2019 21:06

I have two fake Mulberrys. They are just nice leather bags as far as I'm concerned. Who cares?

BumblePan · 07/11/2019 21:06

OP, do you like the bag? That's what matters most

MyKingdomForBrie · 07/11/2019 21:09

I wouldn't have a clue what the brand might be let alone whether it was from the brand it purports to be. If you like it use it, that's all that matters!

I think you must know it's not an obvious fake as your friend asked if it was genuine.

WillowySnicket · 07/11/2019 21:11

I know, I know. I guess if I see someone splashed with a logo or brand I think it looks tacky. Especially if it is (for eg) a Louis Vuitton item where the letters are back to front or something! I would be a bit embarrassed if people thought I was trying to achieve branded status but failing! I am rubbish with this kind of thing. Thanks for the feedback!

@MyKingdomForBrie my friend is as clueless as me! She just saw the tree logo!

I've got a fake prada and everyone thinks it's real, despite the R being ever so slightly wonky.

Candle1000 · 07/11/2019 21:15

‘You wouldn’t care so much about what people think if you knew how little they did’

WillowySnicket · 07/11/2019 21:18

@Candle1000 100% amen to that. Normally something I live by. For some reason, this is making me cringe a bit.

So, the take home message I'm getting is: nobody cares, get over myself.

Pinkbonbon · 07/11/2019 21:19

Its not a fake bayswater or lilly ect...and it doesn't have mulberry printed on big letters on it so I doubt anyone would think 'ooh its mulberry' at a glance, let alone that it is a fake one. No one will notice. If you like the bag then it's all good.

Sexnotgender · 07/11/2019 21:20

As someone who knows mulberry it’s very obviously a fake.

WillowySnicket · 07/11/2019 21:21

It's a fake Roxanne, I believe.

Any mulberry experts about?

WillowySnicket · 07/11/2019 21:22

Thanks @Sexnotgender, that's what I was after! What is the giveaway?

OP posts:
Bilngismything · 07/11/2019 21:22

It’s a Mulberry Roxanne, looks pretty good but would need more photos (the interior mulberry disc back and front and any ‘made in’ label. They were £500 in 2007.

TheDevilHeHas · 07/11/2019 21:27

Unless you are friends with the crew of "The Devil Wears Prada" most of us normal people do not have an inbuilt fake radar. The vast majority of people will have never seen a real designer handbag or spent the hundreds or thousands of pounds on one. The result? If people recognise a brand they tend to assume it's fake.

Unless your friends are loaded, they would never actually know the difference and neither would your average person on the street.

Sexnotgender · 07/11/2019 21:27

The flat polo mint magnetic tabs, they were used in some early models and the smaller rosemary version but most Roxanne’s have a more bevelled disc.
Where the handles attach is the wrong shape, they should be less rounded.
I’ve attached a picture I stole from the purse forum of an olive Roxanne so you can see the difference.

HobbyIsCodeForDogging · 07/11/2019 21:30

I judge people with fakes, but for different reasons. It's because of the ethics of it - counterfeiting is known to fund organised crime. I find it quite abhorrent that people will fund other people's suffering just for want of a label they can't afford.

LemonPrism · 07/11/2019 21:37

I wouldn't know or really notice the tiny mulberry symbols

WillowySnicket · 07/11/2019 21:38

@HobbyIsCodeForDogging totally agree.

@Sexnotgender that is SUPER helpful. Thanks. And yes. I see it now. The shape of the handle bottoms is stark🤦🏾‍♀️ Doh.

You’re welcome. I love Mulberry, the old stuff though not the guff they sell now. Plenty of bargains to be had on eBay if you know what you’re looking for.

alittlebitdemented · 07/11/2019 21:50

I own and have owned a LOT of Mulberry. I think the bag is genuine. When they're making fakes, they cut as many corners as possible; the rivets are all stamped and the buckles have Mulberry written on the side. At the height of the Roxanne's popularity, fakes were not as sophisticated as now and the olive would have been a far less popular colour than oak or black.
Not sure it would be worth their while making fake olive Roxannes. It is a beauty of a bag. I sold mine because I found it an utter faff to get in and out of.

I'm not a true expert but you can get bags authenticated for £5 e.g. m.authenticate4u.com . They really are excellent and could give you a definitive answer.

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 07/11/2019 22:08

Are the metal loops on it's 'ears'heavy enough to pull them down and are it's ' ears' suede or leather? How long is the mid buckle strap? More photos please! I'm a Mulberry aficionado and Roxannes are my all time fave!

ZaraW · 07/11/2019 23:37

I disagree about the fakes being poor quality. I bought one in red from EBay when they first came out and paid around £400. It was my first EBay purchase and I was a bit naive about fakes. The quality was very good but the serial number was the giveaway. I gave it to the charity shop shortly after.

shinynewapple · 08/11/2019 01:23

I would just think you were carrying a leather bag - I wouldn't even look at the label. And if I did I would have no clue if it was real or not.
