Does anyone wear shapewear all the time?

I put a pair of control pants on under leggings the other day because it was washing day and they looked so much better.

I've been watching Mad Men on Netflix and they all wear "foundation garmets" under pretty much every outfit and they look amazing.

So would I be mad to wear shapewear under everything from now on? And any recommendations for good shops/brands? Usually I head to Primark as have a very minimal budget.

If you've found this page in search of shapewear that has been tried and tested by fellow Mumsnet users, you might find our guide to the best shapewear useful. Hope this helps! MNHQ

I’m sure Carol Kirkwood who does the bbc breakfast weather probably wears shape wear under her dresses.

I did when I put weight on... I feel so much better having lost a stone and a half and not needing to daily! Was really uncomfortable!

georgialondon · 04/11/2019 07:43

I think that must be miserable!

fishonabicycle · 04/11/2019 07:45

I do wear opaque black 'shapers' tights. But that's all.

StarlightLady · 04/11/2019 08:02

Special occasion/dress only for me.

And for the uber special occasion I go for a basque. Not if going for a large meal though!

AngelsWithSilverWings · 04/11/2019 11:54

I only wear a control slip under dresses if I'm going out for an evening. I don't particularly enjoy wearing them but they do make me feel a bit more confident.

Sainsbury's do a nice shape/support slip that is quite comfortable and gives a nice smooth look and pulls my non existent waist in a bit.

I've got firmer control ones from M&S ( the type that fit under your bra line ) but I find them quite restrictive so would only wear for a very special occasion.

Have never got on with control knickers. Just get hot and bothered trying to get them on and off.

I wear shaper tights most days to work under fitted dresses/pencil skirts. After three kids they help my stomach feel a bit firmer. I think wearing actual spanx or the like might be a bit restrictive for everyday?

Volvemos · 04/11/2019 12:00

That’s my idea of hell.

WellTidy · 04/11/2019 12:01

I used to! I am now heavier, and don't anymore, I just wear clothes in larger sizes.

Shapewear does make me look so much slimmer though, I agree. I used to wear stretchy dresses, and looked and felt better when everything was smoothed out.

I always chose Spanx, the ones that are one piece and start under your bra and finish like cycling shorts.

LittleAndOften · 04/11/2019 12:04

Only special occasions. The rest of the time I need to breathe! Life is too short to hide in a tubey grip every day.

GrumpyHoonMain · 04/11/2019 12:10

It really depends on your figure. If you are pear shaped then shapewear can often make you look worse by pushing the fat to the waist. In my opinion Shapewear tends to look best on slim women with a tiny bit of an overhanging ‘mum tum’

Miseryisabutterfly · 04/11/2019 12:50

I did when I was bigger and it was awful. I don’t think it’s a good habit to get into. So happy not to feel I need to these days.

managedmis · 04/11/2019 12:53

I wear spanx knickers most of the time when I'm at work. They just make me look more streamlined

managedmis · 04/11/2019 12:54

P. S. I'm not over weight but have a lovely csection shelf, spanx it flattens it loads

Bluntness100 · 04/11/2019 12:55

Do you mean even at home in leggings etc?

Personally I'd not do that, and I get you won't like the solution but It's better to spend some time exercising every day, even if it's just for ten mins, and focus on diet if you need to either tone up or lose weight, rather than strap it all in on a daily basis. That can't be comfy at all

thedevilinablackdress · 04/11/2019 13:25

God no. Sounds miserable. I'd rather spend the money in clothes that fit well.

1300cakes · 04/11/2019 13:26

I find shape wear really comfortable in the areas it's actually compressing, it's like a nice supportive bra for my bum and tummy. But hideously uncomfortable where it starts and ends - always digs in and rolls up/down so I have to keep adjusting it. If I found a solution to this I would wear more often.

MaybeDoctor · 04/11/2019 13:53

I find that a pair of tights, a slip and a vest under a dress can create a much smoother line, but I only do that in winter. In summer I think that I might die of heat!

BeatriceTheBeast · 04/11/2019 14:29

No, I don't, because I'd find that really sweaty and uncomfortable. If I gain weight, I just wear bigger / more forgiving clothes until I've lost it.

GinZinger · 04/11/2019 14:36

I wear M&S non VPL full briefs most days now, they come way up above my belly button. Makes me feel like a right old bird at the grand old age of 37
They aren't technically full scaffolding or anything, they're actually comfy as, but the lack of waist band showing through clothes makes a big difference and I definitely look and feel sleeker.

confusedmaybe · 04/11/2019 15:00

Err no. Not even on nights out etc. Can not get on with the stuff

SteelRiver · 04/11/2019 16:52

I wear it all the time. I find it very comfortable and it gives me that confidence so I don't need to wear the loose & shapeless that I used to as I was so conscious of my flabby bits. Mostly it's just knickers but I have a slip, and a body suit with shorts, that I wear with my own bra, usually under my nice dresses.

StarlightLady · 04/11/2019 18:08

Within my, let’s call it a womens’ friendship group, there is one of us who wears control knickers day in, day out. In fact I would be surprised if she owns anything else. But she is not the largest of us!

For me, first and foremost everything must pass the pretty and comfortable test and “wee with ease” test. Smile

BearFoxBear · 04/11/2019 18:27

I do, clothes just look better with shape wear underneath. I generally find it really comfortable, but have one or two items that aren't as comfy.

TootNCarmen · 04/11/2019 20:22

I wear dresses to work and always wear a control slip underneath. It hides VPL, smooths lumps and bumps and probably takes about half a stone off me. Not too uncomfortable either.

Spanx are amazing but no way could I wear them everyday. Too tight and hot and make my stomach hurt.
