I’m careful about Boden now. When you’re late 20s / early 30s you can get away with some of the zanier prints, but once you push 35+ zany is not a word you want associated with your fashion style. Their shoes and basics are still good though.

River Island..

I used to be obsessed but now it's mostly Asos.

Another Arcadia refusenik (as an aside, I recommend the book "Damaged Goods" on Green, though your blood will boil to read about how he and his cronies systematically plundered his businesses at the expense of the employees).

I no longer shop in LK Bennett: their prices shot up, the quality went down and their recent collections - all those garish, unflattering florals - hurt the eyes.

Agree Molto. You can get away with anything when you’re in your twenties! I went to a market with my (much much) younger sister a few years ago. We tried on vintage dresses. She looked like Sienna Miller circa 2004. I looked like Grayson Perry.

Hobbs, Phase Eight, Boden and Debenhams. Where my entire work wardrobe came from.

Now wearing Thought, People Tree and Seasalt.

Age 44.

Still sad about Designers at Debenhams. I used to get loads of compliments on stuff from that range and then they replaced it with crap.

I also used to buy more in Reiss but they seem to have kept their prices high and are now using cheap fabrics

Next. Used to shop in there all the time years ago, but it's all boring, poor quality and overpriced.

River Island. Loved it as a teen.

Wallis. Used to be good for work clothes, but it's all very dated now.

Bay Trading Company, Dolcis, C&A Clocktower or Morgan because they've all gone bust! The staples of my teenage years! And Principles, where I bought my first ever suit.

I've finally phased out New Look and River Island but am still partial to a bit of Topshop.

Boden, Hush, Joules, Mint Velvet et al - used to love them and then one day I just felt like I was dressed like an old person. Not sure if they’ve got frumpier or whether my taste changed.

Phase Eight as well

It has become extremely frumpy

Joules, white stuff and Cath Kidston. All a bit samey and dated I feel.
I won't shop in Primarni anymore as trying to stay away from throwaway fashion.
I'm 40

There's actually quite a small range of shops/ brands.
I'll look anywhere if I'm after something specific, I dont think I'd rule out anywhere. Although I have never found anything I like enough to buy in Reiss.
There isn't anywhere I can guarantee I'll find something I like, either, especially with the preponderance of polyester.

Where I would shop all the time if I could afford it...anthropologie, Other Stories,Arket.Still love Zara and H&M.

No longer

  • fat face, white stuff, Boden (used to love them) or M&s (why did I frump up my 30s?!)

Sometimes still
  • French connection (great stretchy trousers), H&M (cotton tops and not bad dresses that are not frumpy.), ASOS (as you can try on loads and send back free, but hate their ASOS own stuff now.

Liking more
  • Buying way less.
  • John Lewis (not mint velvet though yuk) for hush, Mango, one offs
  • Sports shops - having a good pair of trainers, and hoodie makes me feel young still (mid forties)
  • reading this thread for online better quality, less frumpy more ethical suggestions!

Hush for me. Too many purchases that I was hoping would be lovely staples... only for the quality to be poor.
Toast for key basics.
Whistles for work.
Boden for work.
Odd M&S for work (their Autograph black tapered trousers are great, workwear basics).
Cos for the odd piece but only when I can get there. Need to see and feel it on first.

River Island - I'm now far too old and comfort-loving for their styles.
Dorothy Perkins - I walk past it every day but I'm not at all tempted to go in. In the olden days I used to buy cheap and cheerful stuff for work there.

I no longer shop in Uniqlo, unless I'm in London and can go in person, as their online service hasn't been very good IME.

I get a lot of things from eBay and charity shops these days. I love Lucy & Yak dungarees, Cos, Hush, Thought, Duns of Sweden and Run & Fly.

I still get the odd thing from M&S, Topshop, Next, John Lewis and New Look.

I am 35, (but about to turn 36 this week).

Jigsaw & LK Bennett - grandmother of the bride look not me. Outnet better and cheaper.

Cos - been there, done it, worn the vast tee shirt. Swapped to Weekday, they do sustainable stuff that fits and lasts.

Having ignored Next for 35 years, I've just bought a splendiferous blue plisse coat for a tenner in the reduced bit. Their Ghost stuff is the best and cheapest around.

51. fat. chic.

House of Fraser. I lost several hundred pounds when they went into administration because they didn't honour an order. I used to be an excellent customer.

Hush - agree with PP that the quality is awful. Ditto White Stuff.

In the High Street.

Except my local market town, and then only in one very upmarket shop (sale only) and the rather good second hand stall in the market.

My local town is blessed with some fantastic independents who understand their town's population really well, and buy to please. Not designer spend, but nice things that are not immediately recognisable.

Jeez I'm 38 and still shop in H&M, Zara, Primark, TopShop, New Look etc etc.
So all the same places I shopped in my teens and 20s. And the same places my 75 year old mum shops 😂

Actually I went through a weird phase in my 20s of dressing like Miss Jean Brodie and I got a lot of stuff from Oasis and Dorothy Perkins. I don't find anything in there any more as it's too frumpy and shit quality for the price!

In the last few years I've whittled my clothes shopping down to The White Company plus M&S Autograph or Collection (the latter mainly for jeans:/trousers).

However I met a friend for lunch this week who was wearing a coat that looked like it cost £500! Turned out it was from H&M Precious range (recycled wool). It cost £80 and as I haven't bought an actual winter wool coat in a decade I bought one in a different colour. I'd ordered two White Company coats that I tried on at the same time and the H&M one looked three times as expensive, so I plumped for that and returned the White Company ones. It was a real eye opener!
