Beauty Box insanity

SplatPancake · 24/10/2019 14:07

So, Caroline Hirons has launched another Beauty Box, so far so standard.

www.carolinehirons.com/2019/10/its-here-the-winter-kit-is-live.html

£290.

Yes, that’s right - £290.

Please tell me I’m not alone in thinking this is just too much, even with an apparent £10k going to charity.

It's a lot of money yes. Some people will go for it.

INeedSleepToo · 24/10/2019 14:12

It’s crazy. I’ve just looked up half of those 12 whole products you get. A couple are around £10 and the most expensive is £30, so it’s hugely overpriced for a bunch of products you don’t get to choose.

INeedSleepToo · 24/10/2019 14:13

Oh, actually there is one product that is £70.

MaryMoffett · 24/10/2019 14:14

The value is over £500 and some products are way over £30 so unsure what you're looking at

That said, this feels like such a mis step

MaryMoffett · 24/10/2019 14:20

I'm all for beauty boxes etc but this is vastly overpriced. And donuts insulting.

Her Facebook group has been alienated really and you can tell they feel this way when you read their posts

MaryMoffett · 24/10/2019 14:20

Almost not donuts!

UpToonGirl · 24/10/2019 14:23

It's expensive but not when you compare it to some of the advent calendars this year. I actually like the look of the products in here but I can't bring myself to spend 300 quid in one go on beauty products, I'd rather spread it out over the year - you've only got so much face to use them on!

I must admit to being a big fan of advent calendars and beauty boxes in previous years but I'm trying not to buy any this year.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 24/10/2019 14:25

No one needs all those products. But plenty will buy it.

I don't understand her appeal at all.

RunsForGummyBears · 24/10/2019 14:26

That's way overpriced. 👎 There are similarly priced (and even cheaper) boxes/advent calendars/gifts with purchase that offer better value.

BloodyCats · 24/10/2019 17:41

It’s so expensive! I was expecting something much more affordable, I’m surprised they have priced it at this when it’s so new.
Liberty Advent Calendar is so expensive because the brand is so well known, the box is beautiful and the products are luxurious. I’m not sure what she was thinking.

plunkplunkfizz · 24/10/2019 18:57

Made me chuckle when she said she was considering an advent calendar. Often I feel like the only person in the UK without my own podcast. This month it’s felt like I’m the only one not offering an advent calendar.

AliceLittle · 24/10/2019 21:06

It's only a good price if you already intended to buy each of those items individually. Otherwise it's sucker marketing.

SplatPancake · 24/10/2019 21:31

Lol @plunkplunkfizz

I too have no podcast

OP posts:
Shitonthebloodything · 24/10/2019 21:36

Horses for courses and all that. It's out of my budget but plenty of others can and will buy it. It's decent value if you're into that sort of thing and comes with offers from each of the brands apparently.
I don't think the price should have come as that much of a surprise as the last box was over £200 and lots of advent calendars are well over that bracket now.

I like her.

Ponks · 24/10/2019 21:46

I was interested to find out what she was bringing out and the thought behind it is good ie setting out a whole skincare regime .. if it had been made up of sample sizes (and hence been a lot cheaper) I would have gone for it, to try these hero products she talks about. But full sizes? No - what if you didn't like them? The fun of a beauty box or advent calendar for me is trying out lots of different things.

Lots of people went for it though - sold out in 12 hours! She's probably wishing she hadn't sent out so many freebies to influencers now.

ThePawtriarchy · 24/10/2019 21:58

It’s more the grouting of the tiles she’s pictured it on that is shocking me!

Miniloso · 24/10/2019 22:50

Caroline Hirons has sold out as far as I’m concerned. I don’t read or listen to her anymore. £290 is just ridiculous.

UpToonGirl · 25/10/2019 11:07

Out of interest I put on the YT release video and had a read through the comments, vast majority were saying it's a good selection but too expensive. Seems a shame she didn't research what her actual followers would be prepared to pay and pitch it accordingly.

The Liberty/Selferidges/Space NK advent calendars are all similar prices but it's a pity most of the people who watch and support CH can't afford her version, which she wouldn't have had the opportunity to do without all those subscribers!

SplatPancake · 25/10/2019 16:16

@ThePawtriarchy - I know!!! So mouldy, so vile!

I wrecked my skin last year with a few of the items I tried from the M&S advent calendar, but at least they were sample sizes - and I know now to avoid the ingredients involved. I don’t think I’d be so equable if I’d paid £290 and was stuck with full sizes.

Plus the packaging of the advent calendars is not great, environmentally.

That said, if she did a mini version of this big one I’d definitely be interested in perusing further... (And if it wasn’t photographed on mouldy tiles 🤢)

Branster · 25/10/2019 16:23

I so agree, it is bonkers. I expected better from her as she seems down to earth. She could have had less products and charged less. I’m not entirely impressed with the selection on offer and the price is crazy.
Looking at the overview of all the offers this Christmas, some boxes are unbelievably expensive.

MorrisZapp · 25/10/2019 16:25

She boots people off her FB group for being gender critical.

thisenglishlife · 25/10/2019 16:30

Caroline's boxes with Cult Beauty have always been around the same price mark. I would have liked smaller sizes too.

Personally, there's too many products I wouldn't use and so I would buy what I wanted instead of such a box. No worries - for others, it may be ideal.

lolaflores · 25/10/2019 16:34

I kinda dip in and out with her as I always have to remind myself, she is pushing product at the end of the day. Sure she cares about skin but her bank account is possibly quite high on her list too.
And...she is a bit bossy in a "I know best, bustle bustle, spending £200.00 is perfectly reasonable...chop chop"
Get knotted love. It's over priced snake oil, how do you have the brass neck to sit there and say otherwise. None of this stuff can really alter the cell rejuvenation of skin. I am getting old, ther is nothing in your horrible placcie bag that is going to make a difference. Apart from a face lift.
I simply dont believe you!
So there.
And I say that as a skin care fiend. But I know enough that the products out there are selling dreams and false hope a lot of the time.

MaryMoffett · 25/10/2019 16:42

@lolaflores I agree. I have a spot of Botox and some fillers - only thing that works and even so, you can have all the work done in the world - nothing holds back time does it?

I cannot get over the photo ing of these items on tiles that have dirty grout in them. Really noticeably so. It's very much at odds with the supposed high end contents.

I don't mind CH and we all have to make a living. This is absolutely tone deaf though, it really is. And her slavishly devoted 'freaks' are, on the whole, disappointed. That's very very clear in her fb group. She literally priced them all out of it, bar a few super duper devoted ones

botemp · 25/10/2019 17:04

I thought her boxes were always well over £200, granted I'm used to Euros so £290 these days is not that drastically different of a number as £240 several years ago.

It does seem excessive though. I'm a skincare nerd and am more of the evidence based less is more school of thought and my routine nowhere near approaches 12 separate products and that at least includes a sunscreen AKA the most important item in your skincare arsenal.

Thinking about it, assuming most projected discounts are 50-60% on these boxes/AC, I could probably put something decent together for £29, and something more elaborate for £59. Potentially a spin off thread?
