What one thing has made the biggest difference to how you look?

I'm in my late 40s and I'm looking and feeling better than I have in years (possibly ever!)

I'm now wondering what else I can do to keep going in this direction - to keep improving with age.

What's the one thing you've done or do that you think makes the biggest positive difference to the way you look?

I'm struggling to answer this myself tbh! I'd suspect it's a combo of being happy and fulfilled (quite a change from being the stressed out workaholic control freak that I was!), 18:6 fasting and a plant-based diet... but who knows really?!

Face yoga.
I kid you not. I started last April and I don’t think I’ve ever had the word “ radiant “ used about me so much.
Also somewhere where I volunteer, two women who work there full time came over and told me I was ageless, and that they’d been talking about me trying to guess my age all week. I’m 53.

Iheartdonuts · 22/10/2019 20:45

The one thing for me was learning to like myself and believing that I am someone that people like and respect. Once I understood that, I became more confident and stood a little taller. This gave me the confidence to start dressing better, smiling more and i felt free. I'm still 5 stone overweight and have 3 chins but more and more people have said they have really noticed the positive changes in me.

Believe it or not - letting my hair go grey.

Wish I had done it years ago.

DragonontheWagon · 22/10/2019 21:16

@Ohyesiam have you got a link for the face yoga you do please?

MadameJosephine · 22/10/2019 21:19

I stopped dyeing my hair and embraced the grey

I had counselling and tackled some mental health issues which in turn has given me the motivation to improve my physical health

I went mostly veggie (still occasionally eat fish)

Following 😀

Ohyesiam - can I ask you who you use for face yoga? I have looked at a couple of youtube channels in the past but not kept it up for long.

FVFrog · 22/10/2019 22:05

Genie electronic facials. It’s basically like slendertone for the face and works by stimulating the facial muscles in the same way face yoga contracts them I imagine. I have noticed a huge difference as I tend to be a bit saggy and jowly in the face, not many lines or wrinkles though (same as my mum!) I don’t mind myself in photos for the first time in years and I’m 50. You have an initial 10 sessions over a 5 week period and then go to a maintenance session once every 2 weeks. That and a good skin care routine to go with it, I like Clarins products.

Taking lots of notes here - I think being organised to book things in e.g. Lashes would be my starting point rather than just ringing salon when I start to think I need something done ...must try harder.

Lashes - I have had a lash lift before and was pleased with result but was wondering whether to go for natural false lashes - is there such a thing and how along would they last ?

I saw Mac strobe cream mentioned here and on another thread - anyone else rate it and any particular shade recommendations ?

So far I've added bra fitting and more water as two things I could achieve starting this week ...,

JaceLancs · 22/10/2019 22:18

Sadly it’s not just one thing but the main thing is that I realised skimping on things just doesn’t work as you age
For example when I was younger I used to stretch my hair appointments from 6 weeks to 7/8/9 weeks to save money
In my 40s I realised this was false economy
In my 50s I have more of a routine
6 weekly root touch up and trim
Nails - gel polish every 3 weeks
Gym/swim twice a week
Try and maintain a weight you are happy with

JaceLancs · 22/10/2019 22:20

Forgot to add - regular brow trim and eyelash dye (I don’t wear make up)

OhTheRoses · 22/10/2019 22:25

Avoid sun damage
Posture
Good hair
Smile

Pinkarsedfly · 22/10/2019 22:28

Losing weight.

I couldn’t believe how much older that extra stone made me look and feel. I’ve got nearly a stone to go until I hit my target weight, but I already feel five years younger.

Sarcelle · 22/10/2019 22:28

@Ohyesiam Face Yoga - is this a You Tube? How long to see effects?

Hotcuppatea · 22/10/2019 22:30

Get your teeth lightened. It'll take years off you.

Cattenberg · 22/10/2019 22:30

I had a facial about a year ago and I couldn’t believe how good it made my skin look. My wrinkles had virtually disappeared and my skin was glowing. The effect had faded within two days, but it’s nice to know I could look like that again.

I tend to put on weight around my middle, and cutting down on sugar for a few weeks made me lose three inches from my waist. I looked and felt miles better! I found the self-control because my first IVF cycle failed and I was desperate to improve my odds second time around. I need to do this again.

Downunderduchess · 22/10/2019 22:59

Ooh @Bluntness100... googling that product asap. For me, I recently had microblading/feathering done, it's given me back a strong brow, defines my face better. As for makeup etc. for the less is more. Diligent with sunscreen & moisturiser. Prefer a laid back natural look to a high maintenance one.

Turquoisetamborine · 22/10/2019 23:20

I turned 40 this year. I lost a stone, had Botox in my forehead which is the only area I have lines, regularly get my brows done, nails kept neat and shellaced.

For my girls birthday holiday I was bought a beauty package which included mani, pedi, tan, lashes and brows. All of those things done together as well as my hair done made me feel much better.

imoverworkedandunderpaid · 22/10/2019 23:27

After years of being underwhelmed by my eyelashes...... mascara primer, nothing expensive, but it's a game changer for me

Destinesia · 22/10/2019 23:41

Weight training and the resulting weight loss and shape change.

Dontsayyouloveme · 22/10/2019 23:44

Microblading
Botox and fillers
Elixir Elite sling tightening facial treatment

Dontsayyouloveme · 22/10/2019 23:44

Skin not sling 🙄

carolina21 · 22/10/2019 23:50

Wigs , Botox , fillers... retinol cream ... and sleep

Pandainmyporridge · 22/10/2019 23:59

Toy-boy.
