Nice dress or not?

I'm looking for a dress to attend a wedding in the USA at Christmas. Is this too matronly? I'm hopeless at style. Usually wear jeans.

Nice dress or not?

For context, I'm mid-fifties and the bride's aunt.

It show off your figure really well. I'd take it up a little to knee height. Tiny amount but makes a big difference.

Sickoffamilydrama · 19/10/2019 11:08

It fits you well and shows off your figure.

It's not my style but is it yours does it make you feel good?
If not you now know that shape suits you and it's a fairly standard shape so just go for a different colour/pattern.

9Greenbottles · 19/10/2019 11:08

*shows

Yeahnahyeah1 · 19/10/2019 11:08

I don’t love it to be honest, I don’t think it sits quite right and I don’t like the pattern on it.
Despite all that tho, you have an absolutely cracking figure and you’re on the right road choosing a dress to show that off!

MrsBertBibby · 19/10/2019 11:10

It looks very nice on you, but it is a bit dull in terms of colour. Is there anything in a similar style but a bit more zingy?

Namechange84 · 19/10/2019 11:10

It's honestly fine for the US and actually a lovely colour and I like the lace. With a nice fascinator, shoes and a bag it will look great.

US weddings and formal events are much more casual I've found over 25 years of attending them and a more conservative approach is often appreciated. I've frequently been criticised for being overdressed when wearing what would be totally appropriate here in the UK!

WhisperingJesse · 19/10/2019 11:10

Thanks. I find these boobs annoying tbh. Taking the dress up slightly might be a good idea. Tbh it's only £40 in TKMaxx so might take a punt on it.

I’m not so sure namechange last US wedding I went to was dinner suits and long evening dresses.

I think that dress could be styled up nicely. Killer heels, great bag, fur bolero jacket. Might be a useful 40 quid spend.

Namechange84 · 19/10/2019 11:14

What kind of wedding is it?

Church/place of worship, Outdoors, Stately Home type place?

If it's a religious ceremony, that length is bang on for what will be expected.

Mammyloveswine · 19/10/2019 11:14

I wouldn't take it up, I think knees should be hidden as much as possible (I hate knees, on an aesthetic level!).

It looks great! Paired with a faux fur shawl or jacket, a beautiful necklace, matching hatinator and high heels it will look fabulous!

WhisperingJesse · 19/10/2019 11:14

How about this? Serious sucking in of wobbly tummy required though.

Nice dress or not?

Namechange84 · 19/10/2019 11:15

Nope. First one is better.

WhisperingJesse · 19/10/2019 11:15

It's got stars all over it and my brother is an astronomer 😀

WhisperingJesse · 19/10/2019 11:16

Nothing else here in a similar style but different colour, BertBibby.

CountFosco · 19/10/2019 11:18

I'd check with the bride's family. DH has lots of family in the US and weddings all seem to require evening gowns.

WhisperingJesse · 19/10/2019 11:20

I don't know much about the event yet but it will be in church.

OP posts:
MrsBertBibby · 19/10/2019 11:22

That's more fun, but looks a lot less smart. Spanx would help, although they give me indigestion if I eat in them so a no from me!

The first one winning for me still.

WhisperingJesse · 19/10/2019 11:26

I'm going to get it but also keep looking. I'll be able to wear it somewhere!

OP posts:
WhisperingJesse · 19/10/2019 11:27

Similar suggestions will be welcomed!

Namechange84 · 19/10/2019 11:30

If it's in a church then the first one is better.

Where are these evening dress weddings?!

I've been to ones in the Southern States and California and they've either been pretty frumpy dress wise (sorry Blush) or super super casual. Most recent one was a church followed by outdoors in Colorado and it was very casual. Ladies were told to wear flat shoes and dresses that wouldn't trail on the ground.

I can imagine a New York society wedding would be very different in terms of dress code but even in New York, not at weddings but black tie type events, I've found it's still not quite as dressy as here in the UK.

WhisperingJesse · 19/10/2019 12:02

It's in Kansas so not glitzy New York or LA!

OP posts:
Elllllle · 19/10/2019 12:12

Longer or shorter sleeves and the first one would be really nice

Jacksback · 19/10/2019 12:19

Great figure , you could wear anything
Second one is more fun / celebratory feel tho

Sturmundcalm · 19/10/2019 12:32

I like the first one and for £40 I'd go for it! I like the second one as well but definitely more casual looking.
