Do these look like orthopedic shoes for grannys?!

Just bought these. Fitflop rally trainers in all black. Have been wearing them round the house today and they are super comfy. Hubby has just come home and said they look like orthopedic shoes, something like his mum (age 90) would wear! Was chuffed with them, but now not sure?!

They aren't ugly. They are plain though but is that such a bad thing really? If YOU like them then that's good enough surely? You do not need anyone's permission or approval.

Oddbutnotodd · 19/10/2019 04:23

I have the same shoe but in a colour with a white sole. I think they’re fine. Very comfortable. As a pp said who actually remembers what anyone wears most of the time. With slightly funky clothing they’ll be fine.
I’m old enough now, 50s, that actually 99% of people don’t really notice or actually care what anyone else is wearing. We’re all just getting on with our own lives. If you like them just wear them. Your feet will thank you. We all spend too much time worrying what other people think.

beanaseireann · 19/10/2019 04:50

Ghastly.
Sorry.

LunaTheCat · 19/10/2019 06:37

If you need comfort then go for it. Ugly shoes can look great. Wear them with funky patterned socks. Make their Ugliness a point. Wear angle grazer jeans or a vintage skirt and denim or leather jacket.
If the rest of your clothes are funky you can carry it off and be comfortable!

Floisme · 19/10/2019 07:54

For god's bloody sake, old people are not the reason for ugly shoes. Feet are the reason. Feet look funny and I don't see the point of pretending otherwise. They also do an amazing job and without them we're a bit screwed. If my feet were causing me pain then I'd wear whatever shoes offered some relief and work around them.

20viona · 19/10/2019 08:02

They are brutal sorry.

GimmeBread · 19/10/2019 08:13

@TroysMammy I'm off to watch reruns of Barbara Woodhouse on YouTube 😀

I'm a Troy's mammy too! My elderly handsome cat is called Troy 😀

tumpymummy · 19/10/2019 08:45

Thanks for the suggestion to relace them (although I think I have done them the way PP said not to!). I think they look better now. These are definitely not for a night out, but for work days mostly or days when I have to walk. I knackered my feet in the summer from wearing 'inappropriate' sandals (including broken bones!) so feel like I need to be sensible now!

Currently in Canada and was thinking again yesterday on the subway for the millionth time how people here dress as they like and 99% do so correctly for their climate .
They have all sorts on their feet (mostly practical) from battered sneakers to leather boots and no one bats an eyelid .yoo busy getting on with their own lives

.everyone is layering up as it’s getting cold .. again coats , hats scarves , gloves etc even the teenagers ( no bare midriff in freezing temps here )

It always strikes me how “samey “ and uniform like people in the UK dress in comparison ....sensible , practical , comfortable or not ...

Wear them if they are comfortable.. your feet have to last you a lifetime ..

TSSDNCOP · 19/10/2019 11:01

It’s good you bought them. Now hide them away.

Alwaysgrey · 19/10/2019 11:03

Honestly? I’d chose comfort. I have issues with my back so shoes are important. I like vionic and do wear fitflop.

totallyradllama · 19/10/2019 15:02

Ah yes ok I think they look fine like that. I quite like them actually. You can always leave the top hole undone too.

I bought some all black converse and I couldn't make them look good so they went to the charity shop in the end for some hipper younger person to enjoy!!

user1471504234 · 20/10/2019 00:44

They are fine OP. If you style a good outfit to wear them with they will look just fine. I’m quite trendy I think and I’m sure I could make them work! Who even cares? Even if people notice them and don’t like them, I doubt they will dwell on them too long. Fitflops are so comfy!

Pinkarsedfly · 20/10/2019 02:52

They look like black Stan Smiths. Absolutely fine.

Time40 · 20/10/2019 03:01

They are the ugliest shoes I have ever seen on mumsnet

No, I've seen far, far worse. Lots of things with horrible heels and buckles all over them.

They're just plain, sensible shoes, OP. If they're comfy, you wear them - and enjoy having happy feet. No one's going to notice if you're wearing them with trousers.

AliciaQuays · 20/10/2019 03:04

As someone with Canadian family. No. Even Canadians wouldn’t wear them. Sorry.

NachoFries · 20/10/2019 03:18

I think they’re fine.

tappitytaptap · 20/10/2019 08:08

I think it’s because they are all black OP, do they do them in some different colours?

CamVegOut · 20/10/2019 08:15

Have you seen the Nike airforce one's that the kids are wearing? They also look like granny shoes but the kids like them. If you like them, wear them. Who cares!

Divebar · 20/10/2019 08:34

If you saw them in Cos you wouldn’t bat an eyelid. In fact I ordered some similar in all white from Cos and returned them on the basis that they were the most uncomfortable flat shoe I’d ever tried on. You’re certainly not going to make them look better with long trousers though. Personally I would say ankle length narrow trousers/ jeans with an oversized sweater or wider legged ones with a shorter top. Coloured socks maybe.... nice ones from Arket, & Other Stories. I would also wear them with a long pleated skirt ( ( (although not with tights.... never tights and trainers imo) . I wear chunky trainers, brogues and Dr Marten lace ups and would have absolutely no problem styling those. Crack on OP.

Aderyn19 · 20/10/2019 08:39

They look like school shoes to me. I don't think they are ugly, just plain. Whether they look 'old' will depend on the rest of your clothes. You probably could get equally comfy trainers that are more fashionable if that matters to you.
I think life is too short to have painful feet - I find I care less now about other people's opinions and more about my own comfort levels.

AnnaMagnani · 20/10/2019 10:06

Just wear them. You have problems with your feet and they are comfy. You aren't going to wear them on the red carpet.

They look like the shoes everyone I know wears at work - we are on our feet all day and comfort is the most important thing! We all own shoes that are more fashionable uncomfortable that we wear for short periods of time on a night out but for all day every day, commonsense is the overriding factor.

SuitedandBooted · 20/10/2019 12:33

Divebar has the styling right.Grin

They are fine, and I certainly see people wearing very similar shoes - flat sole and all! It's quite a thing now - check out ASOS.
They are very plain - but so what? They are comfortable, and that's what matters.
If they were mine, I might try some different laces. I have an "arty" job, so like to look a bit different. I reckon people are just reacting to the brand - tell everyone they're Vans!

Cocolapew · 20/10/2019 12:40

They arent a million miles away from Stan Smiths or Nike Air Force, wear them Smile

Tortoiser · 20/10/2019 12:55

@tumpymummy another here with foot problems. I’ve also got a couple of pairs of fitflop trainers. They’ll look better once you’ve broken them in and they’re a bit bashed.
They are so bloody comfortable that after months of foot pain it’s bliss to find shoes that don’t kill your feet.
The second pic looks better than the first one you posted. Also, what about lacing then x-style.
