Has the Breton striped top finally died?

I just began to ponder whether the ubiquitous Breton stripe top has finally died a death. Without anyone telling me you can wear whatever you like (obviously) what do we all think?

Currently wearing my stripey Save the Whales t shirt from J Crew and straight jeans.

I'm not in the UK and not many people wear them over here.

For many people they were a wardrobe staple before they came back into fashion.

Well I wish I had read this before I put mine on this morning. Grin

I don't really like the classic Breton but I do like a stripy b/w tshirt. If they're dead, order my coffin.

I’m pretty sure they count as a neutral.

Love mine. I freely admit that they are a lazy option.

I have neither time, energy nor budget to break free from them at the moment.

I have never heard of this top

Me neither!

I've literally just looked at myself in the mirror in one, before seeing this thread and thought how dated I look. I'm not fashionable by any stretch of the imagination, but I think the time may have come to look for something different.

I hope not! They’re pretty much my whole wardrobe Blush

I love how a post which refreshingly shows a bit of intelligence and thought is considered overthinking Grin

Clothing, and why we wear what we do is pretty fascinating.

I hope not- I've just bought my very first one from Joules outlet store. I love it, fits very well and I disagree that you need a washboard stomach for it.

I love Toast ones - but usually in the sale. I am ,on paper, completely wrong for a Breton - 34G and five food nil but I always get compliments - the slashier the boat neck the better though.

Those of you who veto wearing them with skinny jeans. What do you wear them with?

They have been going strong since the 1800s so no. It's just that they've been so incredibly popular in the 2000s that people are starting to tire. I will continue to wear them, it's simply a good basic top.

You can wear them with anything Joan. Skirts, wide-leg trousers...

I'm with Flo too. They don't seem quite right with the not-skinnies silhouette. Stripes are a 'classic' but classics come and go too. Like everything, classics tire. Stripes are just tired. They'll have a little rest and then come around again for sure.

I do like the idea of them, but they are SUCH a uniform here in Cornwall I can’t bring myself to wear one.
School mum uniform with jeans and boots or converse.
Retirees uniform with a padded gillet and rolled hair.

So what do the anti skinnies and stripy tops people wear on a normal non work day? Honestly interested!

Idontneeditatall · 18/10/2019 16:05

Jeans not skinny and tops not stripy!

I still like stripy jumpers but tend not to wear more traditional Breton cotton tops as on me they look frumpy

I loathe breton tops. "Hi everyone, I dont have a personality but I really hope you'll like me!"

Breton tops belong with white jeans, trench coats and supergas: in the fucking bin!

FaFoutis · 18/10/2019 16:28

Agreed gwacky.
But they are useful in identifying women I won't have much in common with.
