Has the Breton striped top finally died?

I just began to ponder whether the ubiquitous Breton stripe top has finally died a death. Without anyone telling me you can wear whatever you like (obviously) what do we all think?

Usually about 85% of the mothers at school are wearing them, but since the summer holidays that has changed to floaty polyester dresses with leather or denim jackets so small they can't move their arms.
On the basis of that survey: Breton tops may be dying out, temporarily.

I only really see them on women over 60ish so not a school gate thing near me really. As far as I can tell mums on the school run here seem to wear leggings/joggers and hoodies, or work clothes.
I quite like a breton but I don't own one.
Yay to grunge tho. I loves me a plaid shirt.

does a breton suggest it must be a boat neck? because i fucking hate boat necks and they always seems to be. LOVE a stripy long sleeved t-shirt though and will do until i die but my god they are hard to find in a crew, scoop, v or other.

I love my stripey tops and also still wear skinny jeans. Blush I'm starting to think some of you have seen me in my natural habitat Grin

I think they've been a basic for a long time, but they were suddenly elivated by fashionable types from basic to fashionable a couple of summers ago, and now here we are with them looking dated.

I would put to one side for now, or wear under jumpers/pinafore dresses, rather than as a 'main' item by itself.

@evilharpy - I think I might have had the same perfect Breton from Tescos a few years ago, it was fabulous! So annoyed mine got a stain.

BTW - I reckon animal print has got 12/18 months before it's the same - was ok to have some leopard print on accessories as a bit of interestingly neutral, but now it's 2 winters on the run with animal print everywhere, it's going to look dated next year. I'm avoiding buying anything expensive with animal print on it this winter.

Never! I’ve been wearing them since we were little and would get new ones every year when we went in holiday to France.

It amuses me that there are those who believe that someone doesn't have a personality just because they happen to be wearing a stripey top.

I like stripes. Always have.

Floiswise that is all.

So what do the anti skinnies and stripy tops people wear on a normal non work day? Honestly interested!

Block colours? Skirts? Cords? Joggers? Chinos? Combats? DMs? Slouchy jumpers? Slogan Ts? Although I have just realised I have stripes on my top today. It's not a boatneck though, and I'm going to pretend it's in memory of KC, I even have a boyfriend cardigan on Grin. And DH has more than one red and black stripy top.

interesting re: animal print @DisgruntledGuineaPig

I came on this thread to say that I had jsut stopped wearing my breton tops without noticing, but all the people being weirdly venomous about those who wear them are making me want to dig mine out and wear it tomorrow. With skinny jeans.

To understand why we love stripes, why so many mums love to wear stripes and dress their children in stripes, I researched the evolution of stripes, originating in nature.
Bright stripes in red, black or yellow can indicate danger especially in poisonous animals such as snakes, insects and arachnids.
What's more interesting is how in herbivores such as zebras the stripes are used to express family groupings and to identify individual members of the group, by humans but also by the animals within the group.
When the herd stampede it makes it difficult for a predator to distinguish individual animals to attack.

I have enjoyed dressing my toddlers in boden vests this last year but I'm going for a more colourful, wide stripe this year with navy or white this year. The pantone colours for autumn have been announced and they are very bold! Colourblock/rugby stripes, drop shoulders and high neck/snood hoodies, winter shorts, boots,
Sticking with striped tops for the kids, not so much for me though I am enjoying my grey marl sweat hoodie with fine white horizontal stripe. All stripes must be horizontal. Stripes are life.

TLDR: I have ASD, my special interest is stripes.

Forced into wearing the Breton stripe as it's the uniform of breastfeeding mums apparently. It does hide milk stains well though.

Mine is still in excellent condition, so I shall continue to wear it.

Though I'll probably buy something new most seasons, it's really not much as I buy things I think will last and only get rid (to recycling) if very worn, permanently stained, or damaged. And don't go for things that will date.

Isn't it all part of the idea that style is timeless?

Ah now, leopard print is a neutral.

Leopard prints are going to be sooo last season in about 5 minutes, but it's the same as stripes. It's overused right now but it's still a timeless print. Real leopard print fans will continue to wear it.

Yep, leopard print fans will still wear it, but for about 1-2 years, it will look dated, because it was fashionable, rather than a neutral for a couple of years. Then it'll go back to being just a neutral, inoffensive print.

Stripes were everywhere about 2 summers ago. So now they look a bit dated, but will look like a basic again in a couple of years.

Just remembered my Comme De Garcons Play Stripey T shirt with the heart face. I always get compliments when I wear it. Will definitely wear it tomorrow. ♥ stripes.

Wrf is a Breton stripe? Is this a brand?

I just bought a stripey top from Joules :)

I always find it weird when people talk about this stuff. And always on here people go in about M&S basics. What the fuck is a basic? To me that sounds hideously boring!

Can't believe the timeliness of this thread! Just seen it.

I put on a Breton top two days ago having not worn one for about 3 years (when I used to live in the blasted things).

I used to wear with skinny jeans and yep ballet flats but that wouldn't feel right now, a bit dated.

I put my old one (still looks fresh!) with my new Hush midi denim skirt and flat knee-high boots underneath.

Does that sound like a winning combo??! Or still dated...?

I would also wear it with navy girlfriend-style chinos and trainers these days.

But a definite no to the skinny-jean-Breton-pump uniform from me.
