Well let me put it this way. I'm Scottish and I feel patronised by the 'oh we're going up north, must pack the kilt' thing that they all do, every time.

Nobody who lives here wears the bloody stuff. It just makes them seem foolishly out of touch. It's not a sodding shortbread tin we live in.

I think patronising is in the eye of the beholder.

Wetdogloveshubert · 14/10/2019 21:20

I see why people criticise the choices, but Her Majesty's been at it for so long perhaps we overlook it? fashion diplomacy article link

PinkSun9 · 14/10/2019 21:21

Kate's feet must be killing her in those heels, they seem pretty swollen in some DM pics.

AudacityOfHope · 14/10/2019 21:21

The irony of being told I'm not feeling patronised by someone named @thisenglishlife just smacked me in the chops a bit Grin

paradyning · 14/10/2019 21:24

Max's dress is stunning!

paradyning · 14/10/2019 21:24

Wetdog I thought you were going to say ' spot the similarities between the Goldsmiths'!

AudacityOfHope · 14/10/2019 21:25

Interesting article @Wetdogloveshubert

It's just fancy dress really then isn't it? Pick a country, any country, they can find a cliched outfit to wear.

I think in the 21st century I'd have liked to see things move on a bit.

The shamrock dress was just bonkers!

queenofarles · 14/10/2019 21:26

Audacity I know what you mean about wearing Tartan while in Scotland. But it’s completely different in places like Pakistan , India , various countries of ME, I lived there and went to many functions, they really love it when westerners take interest in their clothes and would gladly help you buy appropriate stuff for their celebrations.

queenofarles · 14/10/2019 21:30

Silly question , but do the RF have their own Tartan? Or can they wear what they like?Blush

QueenOfTheAndals · 14/10/2019 21:32

There's a Rothesay tartan which I assume Prince Charles wears?

OP posts:
AudacityOfHope · 14/10/2019 21:33

I'm sure you're right @queenofarles it's just a massive personal bugbear of mine.

I don't know about the tartan - maybe they wear the Stuart? Dunno. That's how far my knowledge of tartan goes. Same with most people. Although I do rock my tartan shirt from Tesco Grin

I agree re a lot of the themed dressing, but in this instance at least, I expect that style of dress has been chosen to meet a lot of cultural norms and expectations, while also trying (trying!) to look stylish.

In a strict Muslim country, it's less about wearing a kilt so you (think you) look Scottish and more about dressing in a way that won't actually offend your hosts.

That dress is not for me - and I wish someone would take and burn every pair of her plasticky, shiny (no doubt LI Bennett, so expensive) bloody nude heels. They are godawful.

The jewels are nice though.

Oh, and I'm in the "she looks tense/nervous" camp.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 14/10/2019 21:43

I am just in awe of Max’s sari dress.
It is absolutely spot on for the visit

Kate & Max look beautiful.

Awwww the pic of the Sussexes is lovely! Harry looks so proud and Archie is so cute. I'm looking forward to the documentary

Lol, sorry. I meant that I didn't find it patronising personally.

I find the literal dressing fairly funny.

MrsGrindah · 14/10/2019 21:48

See I’m not keen on Max’s dress ...it’s a bit curtainy

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 14/10/2019 21:49

I think that’s the first time I’ve seen Harry holding Archie.
They look so cute. Archie looks like he’s going to be a strapping lad and I love the red hair!

AdaColeman · 14/10/2019 21:51

I'm not keen on Kate's arrival outfit, too pale a colour for her, and the style was very predictable. Though on the bright side she was nicely covered up in all her important places. Sadly not even her lovely JC silver sandals would have swung it for me.

I liked Max in her sari style dusty pink floral dress tonight. So Max wins today's royal tour bingo for me! Grin

Disfordarkchocolate · 14/10/2019 21:51

Wow, I love Max's dress.

N0tfinished · 14/10/2019 21:52

Have you all seen this Max outfit from India? I'm not a fan... the hat looks a bit mental. I think it's the raw-edged lace.

AudacityOfHope · 14/10/2019 22:00

That's ok just messing @thisenglishlife Grin

DevonUkelele · 14/10/2019 22:14

I just think that while Kate has a very many wonderful qualities, being fashion forward and an innate sense of style aren't among them.

And, y'know, that's fine too, I hasten to add Grin.

But while always scrutinised for her outfits, she's never going to be a style icon like Princess Di or - to be more current - Max.

Even Di was constrained by royal rules and standards for much of her life. Hence the instant impact of the black "revenge dress" posted a little while ago - and worn, if not on the actual day her divorce settlement was announced, then within a couple of days of it

UrsulaPandress · 14/10/2019 22:16

Lol at predictable.
