Early 2000's and 35+ what did you wear?

I'm in an am dram play set in the early 2000's playing a (fairly cool) college tutor 40+
All the images I can find are of thongs showing out of jeans, tiny boob tubes etc (and that was students me back then too)

What did "grown up" people wear then? I've tried looking for past Jigsaw collections 🤷‍♀️

Perhaps the family photo album is your freind here? I’m trying to think back to what older work colleagues wore and I can’t remember.

Callmecordelia · 04/10/2019 06:35

I think you need a cheap used copy of this OP -

CountFosco · 04/10/2019 06:37

I was early 30s in the early 2000 and I'm a scientist. I wore a lot of Boden.

Floisme · 04/10/2019 06:58

I was 40+ and, if I remember correctly, I was wearing:
Bootcuts and flares (insanely low wasted - eww)
Gap Long n' Lean jeans.
Combat trousers with a denim jacket.
Midi skirts and dresses (I've recently dug some of them out again.)
Wrap dresses I think, although they might have been slightly later.
Velvet.
I coveted a leather blazer but could only afford a cheap, badly fitting one.
Knee length boots had been off the radar but came back around then, just like now. I can't remember what other shoes I wore.

I can't vouch for them all being around in 2000 - some might have been early 90s.

Floisme · 04/10/2019 06:59

Soz - I meant late 90s or early 2000s

Soola · 04/10/2019 07:03

Have a look at TV shoes on YouTube of that era. Friends as hideous a show as it was is a good indicator of what average people were wearing at the time.

Fozzleyplum · 04/10/2019 07:09

Not sure if this is cool enough/ at all, but I remember a lot of Per Una type longish or midi denim and cord skirts with weird spiral or asymetric seaming.

Floisme · 04/10/2019 07:12

Oh and denim skirts.

Floisme · 04/10/2019 07:15

Ah Fozzle remembered first!

I too recall Per Una being perfectly acceptable at the time. I had quite a few things. And Gap was my favourite shop.

NumberblockNo1 · 04/10/2019 07:20

I taught at that time. Love/ hate of per una. Little row of 3 different buttons on shoulders/ top of t shirt and long checked skirt on a slant.

palahvah · 04/10/2019 07:21

Either bootcut low-rise jeans or needlecords with a chunky roll-neck sleeveless jumper
Or
Ankle-length or midi bias-cut skirt or dress with a wide leather studded belts slung low over the hips.

With square-toed or pointy-toed boots

Juupiter · 04/10/2019 07:22

I was only in my early 20s then but I worked with a lot of teachers in their 30s-50s and I remember a lot of Per Una style long skirts - bias cut heavy fabrics with weird frilly bits, low waist. Large belts that say in your hips especially chain belts or those ones made of big metal discs linked together. Ballerina jumpers that wrapped over at the front and tied at the side. Ballet pumps.

@Palahvaha has it spot on

cricketmum84 · 04/10/2019 07:46

I was only 16 in 2000 but I remember a lot of roll neck jumpers and denim skirts.

ExpletiveDelighted · 04/10/2019 07:54

I remember strappy dresses with a white tee shirt under them, longish bias cut skirts with big chain belts, block heeled court shoes, low rise jeans.

Bigbopboo · 04/10/2019 08:10

Many of the styles from the early 2000s are back in now. High necked tops with bows. Biased cut tops. Sparkles. Brown and camel. Agree on the boot cut jeans and pointed boots.

Craycr4y · 04/10/2019 08:13

Those silk combats, straightened hair from new GHDs, sienna miller skirts with those big belts

treeofwhispers · 04/10/2019 09:47

Trinny and Suzannah 's programme was about that time.

Zinnia · 04/10/2019 10:56

Oh god yes - I was late 20s/early 30s - denim midi skirt + scoop-neck, 3/4 sleeve jersey top + wide hip belt was my favourite outfit c.2001-2. Delicate jewellery. Best going-out top was a beaded halter neck number from. French Connection (or FCUK as it was at the time), to be worn with bootcut jeans of course. Can't for the life of me remember what I used to wear on my feet, mind.

Chanellta · 04/10/2019 12:31

I remember a lot of boot cut leggings, like trousers in nylon.

Xiaoxiong · 04/10/2019 13:18

Sooooo many turtlenecks/roll necks. And cowl necks. I had the Gap long and lean jeans too and lots of knee length bias cut skirts.

I also remember wearing knee-high boots with a skirt long enough to cover the tops of the boots. And thick tights underneath, so I was toasty warm. The rest of the time I was doing the whole Kate Moss thing wearing low rise skinny jeans and ballerina flats and no socks and a massive pashmina and freezing my toes off.

Chocolateteabag · 04/10/2019 20:21

Thank you everyone!
@Callmecordelia & @treeofwhispers - Trinny & Susannah! Of course!

I had that flipping book but charity shopped it at some point Confused
I'll get onto YouTube for a nostalgia fest
Better start learning lines too!

I was early 20's back then but recall uni lecturers wearing a lot of white stuff and FatFace.

HillRunner · 04/10/2019 21:17

Boot cut trousers. Asymmetric skirts with tights and boots. Skirts were sometimes made of cord / tweed.
