Anyone with very thick hair had a pixie cut / short?

Anyone done this? I've tried a few times and the cut never seems right. Anyone show me a photo of how they've had it cut? Or tips? Thank you!

Find a really REALLY good cutter. I think it's hard to impossible for anyone who is not technically adept to do well. If your hairdresser can't cut a really precise bob on straight hair to perfection, doing a pixie cut on erratic hair is a recipe for disaster.

PinkysEars · 27/09/2019 20:50

Yes, it needed product to make it behave (and not look like a microphone). I took a picture of Halle Berry in Die Another Day to my hairdresser and that cut worked really well.

CountFosco · 27/09/2019 20:55

We are a thick haired family and I and DD1 (11) have pixies, mine is very short (like a man's haircut) but DD1's is more of an asymmetric pixie. I do think you need to go to a good hairdresser regularly so they know your hair and then they'll be able to give you a cut that suits you, I've had every haircut going in my life but short hair feels most like 'me'. Personally I think my very short hair looks youthful because very few men my age (I'm nearly 50) have as much hair as I do even if I do have the odd grey. But that might just be vanity talking!

Isolemnlyswear · 27/09/2019 20:59

I had really long, thick and frizzy hair, took forever to dry and straighten, with 3 young children just didn't have the time, so usually just tied it up. Went to the hairdressers with a picture of Jennifer Lawrence with really short hair, and after many "are you sure?" from the hairdresser, i walked out with a really funky pixie cut. Only regret is i didnt do it sooner.

DontFundHate · 27/09/2019 21:02

Ah thanks everyone! It's mid length at the moment, taken me ages to grow it out, hairdresser said longer would weigh it down more but it's just so heavy!! Even with an undercut! I'm tempted to go for it again, I like my new hairdresser so hopefully she'd do a good job, perhaps it's just bad hair cutting in the past

I have a short pixie cut, I also get it thinned at every cut (with those pinking shears scissors if you know what I mean). So much better once half my hair has been removed 😂

I got a pixie for my very thick curly hair last month and I bloody love it. Like Isolemnlyswear I just couldn't be arsed drying and styling with two young kids, and I'd wanted a change anyway. I took a pic and had to put up with a bit of "are you really sure?" but it turned out great. My hair is so healthy at this length that for the first time in my life I don't need to use product, it just air dries in minute in a really nice curl. It's similar to this pic.

Don’t do it op.
I’m currently rocking hair like wurzel gummage when I wanted a lovely pixie cut like the one Sarah Lou who has.
You will almost definitely wake up everyday looking like someone has combed your hair with a toffee apple and the slightest bit of rain makes it puff up.
It will be too short to scrape back and you will spend your days reapplying hair products to flatten it out.

I’m obviously projecting my issues but I’m hugely regretting my cut and am furiously saving for extensions because I just can’t bear the upkeep of it. Maybe Try a long bob first and if that is fine then go shorter.

Iwantacookie · 27/09/2019 21:57

Love my pixie cut jump in shower and by the time I'm ready to go hairs dry. Wish ide done it years ago.
Just wish I could style it a bit more if anyone has any tips?

wichitalinemanswoman · 28/09/2019 09:27

I've got horrendously thick hair which looks terrible when long as it's so thick I have to have it up all the time. I've got a very very short pixie and it takes minimum effort and it's ace

I have extremely thick, 2c/3a hair and I had a pixie cut for years. Absolutely loved it and still miss it now. I found the best way was to keep it quite short, mine was based on the style of Ginnifer Goodwin and pink.
The back would be shaved, and I would have it thinned out. I did blow dry and straighten the top for a sleeker look, a wax for a messier look or to actively style it like Pink does hers. Surprisingly for a short hair cut I could do a lot with it

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 28/09/2019 12:58

I tried it with my mop and it aged me ten years. Easy to care for, but I grew it out.

Ratbagcatbag · 28/09/2019 13:00

I've got massively thick hair. I've had my hair short for ages, but the key is blow drying it correctly (takes less than a minute) and then pencil straighteners and product.

Me! I've thick, curly hair - so you'd think it was a recipe for disaster, right? My hairdresser cut it very short this summer (as short as a man's) and the first time it took him about 2 hours to get it right. But bloody hell it's an amazing cut, I don't even need to style it as such now when I dry it; just blast it all over with a hot dryer and then apply a bit of control paste to give it some texture. It is without doubt the best cut I've ever had.

The hairdresser is key - they have got to be able to cut really, really well because with short hair there is nowhere to hide. I took a pic of Frankie Bridge to the hairdresser and that's pretty much what I got (only very grey and 20 years older Hmm )

Although in my subsequent couple of cuts he's taken it even shorter. Oh, and it does need cutting every 4-5 weeks otherwise it loses its sharpness.

Wonkybanana · 28/09/2019 15:17

I've never had long hair. Growing it out even a little bit shows that I'd end up looking like Crystal Tipps.

Agree with PPs. You need a stylist who's good at cutting. An awful lot these days only seem to be able to do long hair and up-dos. If you can find one whose own hair is also thick, so much the better.

It will need cutting often, or you'll end up looking like the wild woman of Borneo. Four or five weeks is tops for me or it explodes.

Take a picture of what you want. And then explain carefully what it is about that particular cut that you like.

I also use a moisturising shampoo, rinse with water as usual, then tip a jugful of warm water with a good squirt of vinegar added over it as a final rinse instead of conditioner (my hair isn't dry and conditioner just used to make it look even heavier). It makes it really soft and smooth and manageable.

Clangus00 · 28/09/2019 15:26

I did when I was around 13/14....it grew upwards. Never, ever again.

Fragle0611 · 28/09/2019 17:51

I went from long, to bob and undercut, then saw sarah louwho too! Loved it so got it done, my hair is very thick and knew it wouldn't lie like hers as she has fine hair.. but that being said I love it! Tool a bit if practice but now style it straight or curly! As long as you remember your nit going to get it exactly like hers but can adapt then you'll be fine, you do need a good hairdresser though it's TRUE! I also agree it's not the cut if you are busy and want low maintenance,, a pixi crop would be better suited maybe x best of luck with your final choice and have fun with the new look xx

Nonamesavailble · 29/09/2019 09:21

I have incredibly thick hair and I always go for pixie cuts use photoshop to try hairstyles to. Check which looks good with your face shape mine needs to be relatively short
Also I find a barber cuts the hair much better as they aren't afraid of clippers and can blend in well plus they are use to short hair

You need to get it cut more often too between 3-4 weeks I find and ask them to thin it as well

Hope this helps

PinkDaydreams · 29/09/2019 10:17

My hair is extremely thick and curly/frizzy. I’d love to have the chop as I no longer do anything with it, just goes in a bun. Haven’t had it cut for a year because I feel so down about it and hate my hair.
I’m too scared to go short though as I’m worried it’ll end up like a mushroom. One hairdresser bobbed me and it looked ridiculous! (I didn’t ask for a bob, he just did it) or that it’ll end up looking manly.

Teddybear45 · 29/09/2019 10:20

Google Indian women and pixie cut to get an idea of what thick hair can look like. Indian women often have a variety of hair types from all races- I would just stay away from it if you have an afro like me and don’t want to spend loads of time styling it down!

PinkDaydreams · 29/09/2019 10:38

I’m googling but seeing lovely gorgeous hair that’s obviously had hours spent styling it. Can anyone show me some real pictures of their short thick hair please Grin

6060rachel · 29/09/2019 16:18

I had an asymmetrical cut a few months ago and it was really easy to manage. My hair is really thick, and I can't go much shorter than this, cos it just goes spikey! I love short hair though. It suits me much better than long.

That's a great idea @Teddybear45 thanks so much for all the photos everyone, looks fab and so low maintenance. @186060rachel that's very similar to what I'm currently thinking! Looks lovely. Is it easy to style? How do you style it? Do you have to wash it and style everyday or can you wake up some days and just leave it? Thank you!!

6060rachel · 29/09/2019 16:35

Yes, it is easy to style. You just rough dry it all going forward, then it sort of falls into place afterwards if it has been cut in that shape. Then I just use a bit of putty to smooth it, and sometimes some styling powder at the crown if you want to lift it up a bit.
I do wash it every day because it can get greasy, but styling it probably takes me 15-20 mins.
This styling powder is a Godsend if you've got that sort of short style. Hope this helps you!

I love your hair rat bag. Mine is supposed to look like that style but never does. Im guessing the lack of a hairdryer, straightners and product has something to do with it?
