A thread for those of us who still quite like Boden

I know, I know. It's not high fashion, it's not sexy, the fabrics can be questionable and some of the prints look like eighties Lura Ashley on speed. But I'm a 41 year old working mother and no one else at work, at the school gates or on the parish council looks fashionable or sexy either. And Boden does provide a reliable range of decent quality basics for an okay price ( once you find your obligatory discount code). Also, I live in the sticks and, while I often go to Cambridge and London for work and play, I don't want to spend too much time hauling around the shops. Although I've discovered a Cos and a Jigsaw conveniently close to my station, which could be expensive.

I've just bought a Hengeave coat in Airforce blue to wear for the Autumn. And I picked up this dress which looks gorgeous on the model, so fingers crossed my matronly behind doesn't frump it up too much. Anyway, any other fans please do come along and share your finds. I'm think I'll buy a silk shirt next and possibly a tweed blazer later in the year.

I can't imagine dressing for work without their Richmond trousers, silk viscose blouses and interesting flat shoes (I'm really over heels). I've also had a few amazing bags from them that have lasted years.

mrspk · 19/09/2019 19:36

I love their Jeans, have 4 pairs and love them all, so comfortable and don't go baggy on the knees

LoveBeingAMum555 · 19/09/2019 20:13

I bought three of their Dorchester skirts last winter and wore them endlessly, they will be coming out if the wardrobe again this year, the shape and fit work well on me. I like their Richmond pencil skirts too and I have a navy ponte one that I have worn a lot on smarter days. Disappointed with the quality of a cardigan I bought a few months ago and yes they just try too hard to be different sometimes.

Emmapeeler · 19/09/2019 20:26

Boden quite liker here too.

I avoid anything ‘different’ and stick to safe options, usually successfully.

What bugs me most about Boden though is you find the perfect staple, then try to buy it again next year and they have changed it, or the fabric isn’t quite the same.

Oly4 · 19/09/2019 21:35

I love Boden in the summer as I
Live in their jersey dresses. So much choice and flattering.
I buy less in the winter as don’t love their knitwear.
Agree that their stretch cotton work trousers are the business

RoseyPeas · 19/09/2019 22:07

I have 2 of their cashmere jumpers, only worn once or twice and both very bobbly already.
But their silk shirts are good and lovely to wear.

I’m not afraid to say that I like a bit of Boden. I live in Australia, so it’s not infamous here and I can probably get away with it better. In terms of value, prices compare well to similar Aussie retailers.

I have the Ravello top which is silk and viscose, it has washed really well.

PiedImperial · 20/09/2019 06:39

Littlemiss, I have a couple of Boden silk shirts.

I put them in a net washing bag and stick them in the washing machine on a silk/delicates cycle, with woolite detergent.

So far, they're absolutely fine.

Windowbasket · 20/09/2019 06:45

I've just bought this www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/abigail-jersey-dress-navy-zebra/sty-j0493-nnv?cat=C1_S2_G4 and love it!

Pinkarsedfly · 20/09/2019 06:46

Their Brighton biker jeans and coated skinnies are fantastic.

Loveislandaddict · 20/09/2019 06:58

I take the view, that it doesn’t matter where you buy your clothes, as long as it suits your shape. Consequently, my wardrobe is a mix of Asda, next, m and s and Boden.

Sarcelle · 20/09/2019 08:18

I might try their jeans. Are they true to size? I am a size 12-14 depending on the shop.

SeaRabbit · 20/09/2019 08:37

When I saw it in John Lewis, in Cambridge I think, they didn't seem to have steamed anything so it all looked a bit tired. The quality didn't seem good for the price, so I rapidly went off things I'd quite liked in the catalogue.

Also, the patterned dresses people have linked to have the pattern skew wiff (sp?) at the hem, when the hem is meant to be straight!

They have a standalone shop in King's Road, London.

IceniSky · 20/09/2019 10:23

I wear a lot of Boden dresses for work. Their petite section is really good. Tend to go for muted colours although do have a cobalt blue Jersey dress I really like.

Simple cuts and fabric reasonable thick , although I have noticed a thinning.

RoseyPeas · 20/09/2019 11:28

@LittleMissEngineer
I do the exactly same as Pied, except I use Persil Silk and Cashmere 😀
I've only washed it.about 4 or 5 times though

AbandonHopeDarr3n · 20/09/2019 11:47

I've never thought of myself as a Boden kind of person, but I have just bought myself a pair of 7/8 trousers from there - are they called Richmond? Why am I asking you 🤔?

Anywho, I am just waiting for them to arrive. They do look useful and a bit different to my usual.

AbandonHopeDarr3n · 20/09/2019 11:48

The trousers I've just bought are secondhand, so hopefully will be thicker fabric...

Sooverthemill · 20/09/2019 11:56

@Sarcelle in general their jeans are true to size. I have very many pairs. I am size 8 and short so love the petite that is available in almost all of them. I have once only sent back a pair because they weren't a good fit. Try them, they have a 365 days return policy and are a good quality Jean. Look in the sale too

Cohle · 20/09/2019 11:57

I like Boden for work.

I don't like many of the prints (I think a lot of them are very identifiably "boden"?) but their jersey dresses in black/navy are great workwear staples for me. They're good for very long days when I want something comfortable but still smart looking.

I also like their blouses/shirts.

Lucked · 20/09/2019 12:06

I buy a fair bit although rarely prints. I have noticed Jo Swinson has the Aurelia Ottoman dress in multiple colours and it got me thinking about that thread of buying multiple colours of a good piece of clothing.

I want the Bronte dress in midnight garden as it is such an unusual shade of cool green.

zafferana · 20/09/2019 12:19

If I worked in an office I would probably have several of their smarter dresses, as they can be really nice and they're good quality. The mid-price jersey dresses though are completely unflattering unless you're tall and slim. The ones in heavier fabric though or with full skirts look really good. I have a couple for special occasions and I always get compliments. I steer well clear of the flowery patterns though and stick with plain colours, polka dots, etc.

PiedImperial · 20/09/2019 12:38

I have to agree that the concessions in JL look dire.

It's like the JL buyers have handpicked all the brightest colours and boldest patterns and ignored everything else.

So many times I've gone in wanting to try things on and they've not had one single thing there that I was interested in.

But on the whole, yes, I like Boden (except for the garish patterns and their penchant for "fun" details, obviously!)
