Heavy dresses to wear with tights and boots?

PlaymobilPirate · 16/09/2019 16:27

I have a black courdroy pinafore that I wear to death. It's thick and very forgiving but I can't wear it every day!

If I like the pinafore, top underneath and tights look what else will I love please?

I'm a short chunky 14/16

You will love Toast but oh it's pricey. I always say this but Uniqlo and COS may have stuff you like, loads of corduroy in Uniqlo right now.
Or the other way, try Seasalt perhaps?

MrsMaiselsMuff · 17/09/2019 10:40

I'd bookmarked this hoping for more responses! Hopefully today's posters might have some ideas.

I'm wondering if we're too early, as most places don't seem to have the proper warm stuff in yet. Although there is a corduroy pinafore in White Stuff that looks great, I'm many colours, and there's a 20% off code currently too.

Teddybear45 · 17/09/2019 10:42

Hobbs, Warehouse and Uniqlo all have dresses that can be worn with tights.

TooSweetToBeSour · 17/09/2019 11:37

Have you considered high waisted skirts with braces? Slightly more modern version of a pinafore!

Musicforsnorks · 17/09/2019 12:41

The issue with most dresses is - they’re thin, badly finished, no lining, overpriced.
I’ve been trying to get away from jeans this past year and finding it difficult for this reason.

To find really decent, good quality skirts and dresses would put me back so much financially that i sim-ly can’t do it.

There’s a lot of cheaper stuff on the high street yes, but it wont be warm, practical or well made. It’s depressing.

Most dresses at cos have no sleeves or so many odd protuberances that they would not sit well under a coat. I wore a skirt yesterday that I paid £65 in the sale for from whistles and the viscose was ugly and shiny in broad daylight. Just glad I hadnt got it at full price 🙁

Musicforsnorks · 17/09/2019 12:48

Both M&S and Joules are currently selling a long pattern skirt, one at £50 and the other at £69 or thereabouts. Neither contain any natural fabric. All reviews state that they are badly finished with no lining.

I searched for a wool heavy pleated skirt a few weeks ago and only managed to find one at Brora and Margaret

And yes. Some eye catchingly lovely frocks at toast - but I’d have to have most of them altered to fit me and would need several different coats to complement them. They may be thicker and lined but most are sleeveless and do not look warm.

Margaret howell.

I like jumper dresses with tights and boots. Espirit do really nice ones that wash well

AnnPerkins · 17/09/2019 13:07

I just came to say Esprit too. I got a knitted dress in the sale last year and it is excellent quality, quite thick so it doesn't cling in unflattering places but not too hot for those of us suffering from hot flushes Blush.

Ninkaninus · 17/09/2019 13:22

I’d probably get a couple more pinafores since you know you love the style and feel good in it.

As pp said above, Toast is good for this sort of thing, but very pricey. Should last for years and years though.

There is another sustainable brand that does lots of pinafores, dungarees and that sort of thing but the name completely escapes me just now...

I like merino wool dresses in A/W. I’d go to places like Whistles, Toast, Jigsaw, Jaeger, White company, Boden, John Lewis, and also as mentioned already, Uniqlo (although I’ve not shopped there yet myself so can’t personally recommend). M&S had some very nice thick jersey dresses in last year but I don’t know about their stock this year.

DontFeedTheCatCake · 17/09/2019 13:26

Boden do lots of heavy ponte dresses, might you like that look?

Sleepinglemon · 17/09/2019 15:28

I like a tartan skirt for autumn/winter: www.johnlewis.com/hobbs-elea-wool-mini-skirt-red-charcoal/p3695835

Cocolapew · 17/09/2019 21:12

Sainsbury's have lots of pinafore dresses as well as cord shirt dresses and tartan dresses.

EducatingArti · 17/09/2019 21:51

Thought do some lovely pinafores. I have 3 in the same style but different fabrics. They were in the sale.

They are really well made with lovely fabrics and pockets!

ItWillAllBeOkInTheEnd · 18/09/2019 01:05

I tend to use eBay to get my natural fabric wool skirts and dresses. Brilliant bargains, good quality not like most of what's on offer on the high street.

PlaymobilPirate · 19/09/2019 21:01

I forgot I'd posted this - excited to see there are replies! Off for a browse!

Divebar · 19/09/2019 23:16

Definitely check out eBay .... I found a gorgeous weighty wool pleated skirt ( similar to a kilt) by Daks. The quality is far superior to anything you’ll find on the high street for a fraction of the price.

Zinnia · 20/09/2019 00:25

@PlaymobilPirate  happy shopping!

@EducatingArti ooh I'm interested to hear you say that about Thought, been eyeing up a couple of things on their website but was wondering about quality at the price. Have you bought much from them?

EducatingArti · 20/09/2019 07:33

I've only bought the 3 dresses. The quality was excellent. Better than M and S and much better than other high street stores like Next. I love my pinafores.

Zinnia · 20/09/2019 08:47

Thanks that's very good to hear! Think I know what my next purchase is going to be...

fedup21 · 20/09/2019 08:50

A line cord skirts with 3/4 serve tops or jumpers.
White stuff/Fat face skirts.

New Look have loads of pinafores.

These are fab, too.

30not13 · 20/09/2019 08:52

Try M&co

nitgel · 20/09/2019 08:59

uniqlo or baukjen have some nice dresses atm

KeithFitt · 20/09/2019 11:06

I've just bought This Dress and its really heavy and well made.

Snog · 20/09/2019 14:33

I love my corduroy for autumn!
I have a couple of cord pinafore dresses from fat face and also a denim one from white stuff. I also have some wide leg culottes from white stuff and some A line skirts too. I also love the Easton cord dungarees from Lucy & Yak. I’m wearing them with the seasalt stripy tops and ankle boots from Fly London.

Loads of places are selling cord pinafores this year if you want to buy another colour or a different length.
