Can we stop with the stupid ‘can I speak to the manager/mum bob’ comments

I see the same ‘joke’ over and over and over again. We’re not rude about any other style of hair cut so what makes a short bob open to it?

I’ve had versions of bobs my whole adult life. I’m chronically ill and it takes a toll on my hair. It’s fine and thin. It can’t handle being coloured. It always looks best in a short sharp bob, cut into my neck at the back. Any longer and it looks like rats tails, any shorter and it sits flat to my head.

Reading the constant piss-take comments about my hairstyle gets me down (and there’s at least one on every short hair style thread).

It’s not even funny, it’s just boring.

The haircut you describe isn’t a “talk to the manager” haircut.

Birdie379 · 05/09/2019 07:26

Yes it is, it’s an inverted bob.

In fairness we're rude about lots of haircuts...

Sorry about your issues but you can't police what other people think is funny. It's not offensive- racist or disablist or homophobic. It's just hair.

Birdie379 · 05/09/2019 07:29

We’re not though, not on here. It’s the same crap joke over and over again. I’ve never heard any other hairstyle referenced like that.

Would you like to speak to the manager op? Grin

Only playing, it’s obviously getting to you but I’d say it’s more of an online thing than something people really think in real life. I’ve never heard anybody refer to it offline. I also quite like a bob, functional but nice.

Elementalillusions · 05/09/2019 07:34

Is your name Karen too?

That’s the only reason I can think why you would be so bothered about what other people think is funny or consider a joke.

ExpletiveDelighted · 05/09/2019 07:38

I think they are horrible, sneery expressions, not funny at all.

31RueCambon75001 · 05/09/2019 07:39

I dont get the joke!

ImperfectTents · 05/09/2019 07:40

I have a grey bob, I might as well go die in a hole

Kenworthington · 05/09/2019 07:41

You would if you’d ever worked in retail @31RueCambon75001

LolaSmiles · 05/09/2019 07:43

The thing is "can I talk to a manager" wouldn't have become a thing of enough people hadn't had run ins with women looking similar asking to speak to a manager.
When the trends change and there's another observation then I would imagine the silly comments would change too.

I think it's a bit much to take offence at a silly observational comment about a group of people, if you know it doesn't apply to you.

ruddynorah · 05/09/2019 07:45

It's not exactly a bob those memes mean. It's a very short bob with a longer section to one side and usually spikey bits at the crown, often with stripey highlights. It's definitely not just a straightforward bob.

It’s an import from twitter and the origin is American, as such it doesn’t really make sense when thrown around as an insult in the UK and it wouldn’t be something the vast majority of people in real life would be thinking when they see a bob.

This insult says more about the person saying it than the person it’s directed at. I know it’s hard but when you see it, just roll your eyes at the poster who derives their opinions on style from twitter memes rather than their own life experience.

maidenover · 05/09/2019 07:52

I don't understand the "can I talk to the manager" comments. Is this just a way to ridicule assertive women?

^ this in spades btw

maidenover · 05/09/2019 07:53

@LolaSmiles I’ve never seen this, have you?

Manontry · 05/09/2019 07:53

I think it's very funny and accurate. I have 'mom boots' and other items of frumpy clothing.
You could always cut your hair?

Stevienickssleeves · 05/09/2019 07:54

Can i talk to the manager haircut is not a bob, it's a kate gosselin circa 2007 cut...short with some body/flair on top

ShirleyPhallus · 05/09/2019 07:55

No, the standard bob is not the talk to the manager haircut - it’s a starkly graduated cut with stripey highlights and long bits at the front

To be honest, there are lots of things which people disagree on. The prettiness of shoes being the first thing. Also a lot of clothing some think are lovely and others think are lovely. The same with haircuts.

With regards to repeated jokes - maybe go to the spider threads (“burns house down!!”) or any mention of gin (“pass the gin!!”). Those are repeated far more frequently than this

Manontry · 05/09/2019 08:02

Is your name Karen too? Grin

MildThing · 05/09/2019 08:04

Birdie, I get those raw nerves close to the surface.
People mostly take an interest in S&B because they care about their looks and often feel self conscious. How many people here would never go out without make up or on holiday without straighteners etc?

So feeling your style is potentially being laughed at doesn’t help.

I have a child who uses splints and Piedro boots to walk www.piedro-uk.co.uk/childrens-orthopaedic-footwear and I flinch every time someone describes shoes as looking ‘orthopaedic ‘. Fair enough people might prefer daintier footwear, but I know my child will hear this derogatory use in a fashion context for life.

Never heard of this particular bob, but I am sure you look great.

MorrisZapp · 05/09/2019 08:05

My name actually is Karen and I have a bob. Thing is, I'm baffled as to what hairstyles aren't bobs? Seems to me, if you have hair, you have a bob. Short hair: short bob. Does anyone have hair shoulder length or shorter in a non bob, and if so could they describe this hairstyle please?

Manontry · 05/09/2019 08:06

It's been described above. It's not a normal bob.

Manontry · 05/09/2019 08:07

karen

milliefiori · 05/09/2019 08:13

What I don't understand is what the hell hairstyle are we supposed to have instead of a bob? I'd look mega frumpy with short hair/pixie cut. I do look better with shoulder length hair but it's such a faff to maintain - far more trips to the hairdresser, having to tie it up when it's hot. Bobs can be made to look sleek or messy - they are really versatile. But I have often heard a friend of mine who always has a bob being referred to as 'that frumpy woman,' or 'that woman with the frumpy bob'. I don't think of her as frumpy at all, but clearly people under forty do.
