Chic cocktail party - help

I have NC'd as lots of friends are on here and will have been invited to this doo.

I am a size 14 curvy 50+ woman who lives in jodhpurs and jeans. I would love to do 'chic' and trendy but often get it wrong.

I have been invited to a cocktail party at a very cool club in London. Most of that sentence is out of my comfort zone 😟

I reeeeally want to go. Hosts are trendy artists types and are about a decade younger than me.

Budget not an issue if it's the right thing... dress me please!

I would look in Whistles for a cool Midi

sleeves or not?
what colours suit you?

How about this dress as a starter?

High waisted wide leg culottes with a tailored silk blouse.

The high waist will nip you in and the wide leg is flattering on every shape. The blouse- roll up the sleeves a little and push them up. Wear with a chunky cuff. Shoes- I would go for a mid heal and very very pointy toe.

Colour wise-

Navy for the culottes and a patterned blouse. Red lipstick and a nice clutch bag. I like the idea of a suede biker type jacket.

Will look for links now!

I wouldn’t do a white blouse myself but this gives you an idea of the look I’m thinking of.

Chic. Elegant and on trend without being too “fashiony” also so important to me, trousers will have pockets for that lounge lizard look and separates mean comfort and ease of going to the lavatory.

Thank you so much! I hadn't thought of looking at Whistles. I must be entrenched in the 80's, to me a cocktail dress is short, shiny & black.

I'm 5'5", fair skin, blue eyes & blonde hair.

I don't think I'd dare wear a jumpsuit, at my age? Maybe I should try one on.

I'm traditionally curvy, big boobs, wide hips, smaller waist. Quite vintage looking but I don't like vintage style dresses or big patterns. Need to hide my upper arms and my calves (horse riding).

Gosh, I really rather like th look of the navy jumpsuit. I might order one to try on. What would you accessorise it with? Fab shoes? My friends tell my my pearls are ageing so I can't wear them.

I'd wear a long gold necklace maybe like this one?

If I were you I'd think fuck it and by a totally sequined dress, ideally in gold or rainbow colours. Alternatively wear black and a gold or brightly coloured necklace. Walk tall and with confidence and I'm sure you'll look fabulous.

Farmerfrump I love the jumpsuits but I find straighter leg jumpsuits suit curvies like us. I don't have a small waist though so they may look better on you. Order a few different ones or go to the stylist at John Lewis and get them to help.

I live in London and go to fancy cocktail bars fairly regularly. Please do NOT wear a cocktail dress, you will be hideously out of place, and look like an utter tourist.

The Phase 8 jumpsuit is a really good choice, but don't over-accessorise it. Keep it low-key and sexy.
