Fab at 50 - can I do it in a month? Help!

Frexit · 12/08/2019 14:16

It’s my big birthday next month and I’m having a party to celebrate. I want to look really fab on my special night (this is my first and only birthday party as an adult - I’m not great at being centre of attention) and am hoping the experts on here can help me Smile.

Main issues I’d like help with are:

Skin
My diet is rubbish. Waaay too much sugar and my skin is greyish, dull and starting to sag. I’ve got a great set of jowls developing Confused

I have really bad puffiness under my eyes with shadows and redness. I look permanently very tired (I sleep very badly too).

I will be dieting for the next month, reducing my carbs and sugar intake significantly and drinking loads of water but is there anything else I can do in terms of supplements or creams/treatments to help my skin and my eye bags? I’ve had facials before and beyond the initial softness, never really feel I’ve benefitted.

Teeth
Any whitening treatments that are ok for sensitive teeth? I’ve been using a charcoal toothpaste and think it’s helped slightly.

Cellulite
I’ve got a body brush I’ve never used. Am tempted to buy this but no idea if it’s just a gimmick. Has anyone used with good results?

Arm flab
I’m a size 14/16 weighing around 11st 11. I’m genetically blessed with horrific bingo wings. Anyone done anything that’s really made a difference to this area?

I know I’m not going to transform myself in a month but turning 50 and trying to choose an outfit for my party is giving me an incentive to tackle these problem areas in the hope of seeing some improvements in that time frame that I can then continue with.

Thanks so much if you have any suggestions Smile

I absolutely LOVE those two jumpsuits (I don't have anything more helpful than that to add, I'm sorry!!)

LadyBumclock · 13/08/2019 16:20

Ah I’m hurtling towards it too!

For your skin, as well as lots of water, eat salmon and avocados at least twice a week, and get enough sleep. Also agree with Vaseline - great for around your eyes at night.

Wear something easy to wear and comfortable as well as gorgeous, so you feel positive and relaxed. On the night, smile, laugh, dance (if you do that!) and don’t worry about whether you look fab enough - enjoying yourself will make you look lovely as well.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/08/2019 16:49

I like the green jumpsuit, depending on the fabric.

I think the grey dress is more of a wedding vibe than party vibe.

Personally not a fan of the red dress, sorry.

JMAngel1 · 13/08/2019 18:49

@EatenByDinosaurs. oooh I swear by African Black soap too - it has transformed my skin.

OP, the red jumpsuit is perfect - classy but trendy - red trumps green for birthday girl status especially as you're a brunette.

EatenByDinosaurs · 13/08/2019 21:50

JMAngel1 African black soap really is remarkable isn't it Grin

Frexit that green jumpsuit is gorgeous. I'm not keen on the others, with the red ones I think they'd be tricky to pull off without them looking like they were wearing you and not the other way around. I suit red, but very rarely wear it as a main colour for that reason. Its your birthday, you want everyone telling you that you look amazing, not that your dress is amazing, iyswim.
The grey one is a bit wedding, the next one, I don't know, seems a bit nondescript is a weird way. Just my opinion, wear what makes yiubfeel amazing.

Have you had a look at Dancing Leopard? They often have great stuff Smile

Longlongsummer · 13/08/2019 21:57

Lots of advice here! I’m 50 too in a few months. Eek!

It’s a bit scary.

A dentist professional whitener is probably best?

Excercise too. I’m really slack at the minute and it definitely impacts on everything. When I exercise my skin glows.

Really good hair colour now.

Really good cut on the day.

Experiment with clothes now, try on loads.

Don’t bother with cellulite. Just cover bits you don’t like. But buy expensive if you can for the night. A good fit does wonders.

Mediation or yoga to relax you.

Have a great party!

Longlongsummer · 13/08/2019 22:00

Sorry to ask, are you slim?

If you are slim and tall the jumpsuit might be chic.

Otherwise forget it.

Grey dress is nice. The others are really bold and not sure they wouldn’t overwhelm.

Longlongsummer · 13/08/2019 22:03

Phase eight can be good.

I like french connection. And sometimes coast.

Frexit · 13/08/2019 22:34

Thanks ladies for the feedback. Will take a look at dancing leopard. Never heard of it. Will try FC too. I take the point on the boldness of the red items. I think maybe I was taking the ‘it’s my birthday, I need to embrace being centre of attention’ a bit too far maybe Grin

I’m not slim or especially tall at 5’6 but I have 2 sleeveless jumpsuits from P8 that I always get loads of compliments on when I wear them. I am in proportion and I think the wide kegs balance me out. I’ll seek an opinion when I have a try on. The green one just feels a bit safe and potentially boring but it does have the advantage of covering both cellulite and bingo wings Grin

I am off to search for some of the face products recommended on here now. Thanks again

Looked at dancing leopard. My favourite is this style
and I quite like these in the multi options but I’m not a leggy Latina so not sure if they would look right on me. I like the slightly less formal style of these. Party is in a rustic setting, seated meal and dancing if that helps.

I like the dresses from dancing leopard. As you say, so hard to tell, I find trying it on, tAking photos and then asking honest friends is good. As then they can say this one - rather than ‘oh god no!’ Iyswim

Frexit · 13/08/2019 22:55

Yes good shout. I have missed two deliveries today so I’ll start that process tomorrow Smile

Teeth - i think a session with a hygienist professionally cleaning them is better than a whitening toothpaste. Every timei leave the hygienist i think my teeth must have been brown before! Gets rid of all the staining

Frexit · 13/08/2019 23:29

Thanks Potatoes I’m a bit scared of my hygienist but I should probably make an exception here. My dentist is amazing. The hygienist is a bit heavy handed! It hurts Confused

So I have taken EatenByDinosaurs skincare regime and ordered ...

The Ordinary Glycolic Toner. I’ll use my Pixi Rose Toner for days I’m not using that.
The African Black Soap
Rosehip Oil
Biore sunscreen stuff
The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid

I will buy Vaseline tomorrow and once all my products have arrived I will do a month of the regime outlined. There will be before and after shots taken. Whether I’m brave enough to post them is a different matter!

I’m off to look at eye bag potions now. Once I’ve done that I better get my beauty sleep Wink

I’m excited! Thanks all Star

Gentle acid for dull skin - even old fashioned to most but new in our prime clinique turnaround can make skin brighter.

My 50th is in 8 weeks. I've got down to 10st 3 but don't uncover my bingo wings (they're permanent) unless temps are above about 20-23, depending on how hot the flushes are.

EatenByDinosaurs · 13/08/2019 23:45

Frexit yes, but that's exactly the point, we want everyones' awestruck attention on fabulous you, not on a beautiful dress with the birthday girl in it, iyswim? Grin

I love the first Dancing Leopard dress, in the red leopard I think it would look fabulous with some dark red lipstick. Any of the colours could work really well depending on whether they look good on you, and more importantly feel good on.
I confess I have been mooning over that dress in the navy star pattern. Grin

I really hope the skincare regime works as well for you as it has for me, keep us updated! Grin

PickAChew · 13/08/2019 23:52

Don't like either of the last 2 dresses - theat grey one makes the model look bulgy!

Either jumpsuit, if you can carry them off. They'd look like boiler suits on me.

Frexit · 14/08/2019 00:13

I like the green or dark red leopard and the navy star one is gorgeous too for a daytime look. I just have a feeling that they’ll look a whole lot less glamorous without a super slim, up to the armpit, naturally brown and smooth leg poking out Grin

OP posts:
EatenByDinosaurs · 14/08/2019 00:26

The green leopard one is gorgeous too, and would look stunning as you're brunette. You could really glam it up with say a suede obi belt and some great jewellery and shoes. I think it's one of the few styles which genuinely looks as good on the less leg length endowed and paler of flesh of us Grin

Yes, the navy star one is too casual for evening, but I am quite fancying it for casual lunches and the like Grin

zippyswife · 14/08/2019 07:40

The first dancing leopard dress is stunning. I nearly bought that for myself recently. I’ve never bought from there before and was unsure of the quality/sizing. Not sure if anyone else can advise on that?

The skincare. Personally I’d be scared to start a new regime especially with several items. Your skin could easily react and that’d be awful! Although I’m sensitive prone skin so I’d be more concerned maybe.

I second the tonnes of water, fruit and exercise. That’ll make you look great.

Pinkarsedfly · 14/08/2019 07:48

Hi-Smile teeth whitening system is working well for me - I have very sensitive teeth but I can use this with no problems.

Frexit · 14/08/2019 10:07

Oo thanks for the teeth whitening tip. I’ll investigate.

OP posts:
Frexit · 14/08/2019 10:15

zippy I’m hoping my skin will be ok but it’s a good point you make. Whenever I get a beauty calendar I just slap a bit of everything on and so far no issues but I’ll keep an eye out for any reactions.

Think I might order the leopard dress and see what it’s like.

The red dress I linked to above has arrived. It’s horrible. I suspect I’ll look like Jessica Rabbit’s older lumpier sister when I try it on later. It’s all boobs and legs by the looks of it 😂

Both colours of the dancing leopard shirt dress are sold out in my sizes. Had the green one in my basket and by the time I got to checkout it was showing as out of stock 😭
