Fab at 50 - can I do it in a month? Help!

Frexit · 12/08/2019 14:16

It’s my big birthday next month and I’m having a party to celebrate. I want to look really fab on my special night (this is my first and only birthday party as an adult - I’m not great at being centre of attention) and am hoping the experts on here can help me Smile.

Main issues I’d like help with are:

Skin
My diet is rubbish. Waaay too much sugar and my skin is greyish, dull and starting to sag. I’ve got a great set of jowls developing Confused

I have really bad puffiness under my eyes with shadows and redness. I look permanently very tired (I sleep very badly too).

I will be dieting for the next month, reducing my carbs and sugar intake significantly and drinking loads of water but is there anything else I can do in terms of supplements or creams/treatments to help my skin and my eye bags? I’ve had facials before and beyond the initial softness, never really feel I’ve benefitted.

Teeth
Any whitening treatments that are ok for sensitive teeth? I’ve been using a charcoal toothpaste and think it’s helped slightly.

Cellulite
I’ve got a body brush I’ve never used. Am tempted to buy this but no idea if it’s just a gimmick. Has anyone used with good results?

Arm flab
I’m a size 14/16 weighing around 11st 11. I’m genetically blessed with horrific bingo wings. Anyone done anything that’s really made a difference to this area?

I know I’m not going to transform myself in a month but turning 50 and trying to choose an outfit for my party is giving me an incentive to tackle these problem areas in the hope of seeing some improvements in that time frame that I can then continue with.

Thanks so much if you have any suggestions Smile

If your brunette you could get some lighter caramel lowlights around your face area. Lightening the hair around the hairline face area throws light into it and makes face glow. Darker hair around face area can cause shadows to appear deeper. Also, face exercises tone the muscles in your face to shorten and lift them.

Ocies · 14/08/2019 11:09

What about getting a fake tan? I’m 52 and think a bit of colour makes wobbly arms and legs look much better!

Milliy · 14/08/2019 11:30

Also lifting weights can transform upper arms. Could make some difference in a month.

I'm in a minority of one, I think, but I don't like those Dancing Leopard dresses. I think they look a bit (whispers) tacky. Sorry!

bionicnemonic · 14/08/2019 12:06

Those dresses are polyester as well...

Well yes, but so are the jumpsuits OP likes too so I assumed she has no aversion to it?

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 14/08/2019 12:54

I do like the first lot of Dancing Leopard dresses, particularly the bamboo print.

Re weights: get an 8kg kettlebell from Amazon and look up kettlebell workouts on YouTube. Lots of good ones. Presses, bent rows and haloes are great for toning arms. My bingo wings are still there but much diminished.

Frexit · 14/08/2019 13:08

No aversion to polyester unless the item looks really cheap and nasty as my mum would say Wink

I will investigate the kettlebell thank you. Couple of you have mentioned it. 8kg sounds heavy though! I’m a wuss. 3kg hand weights were tricky for me Shock

I’m open to outfit suggestions too by the way if anyone sees anything that might fit the bill

Sounds like my philosophy, in a youthful act of teenage rebellion I did once wear an actual bin bag to a vair vair formal event, to the horror of my parents (I'm still surprised they knew what a bin bag was), and these days so long as its not replicating that look I think I'm good Grin

Frexit Silk Fred stock Dancing Leopard, and often have some other great dresses too, so might be worth checking to see if they have it in stock? Smile

EatenByDinosaurs · 14/08/2019 13:25

Sorry, its still very early and pre-coffee here, I'll have a hunt when I'm a bit more alive too Grin

notacooldad · 14/08/2019 13:40

It looks like all bases are covered
I usually work down top to toe what needs doing for an event (sorry most of these are repeats
Hair. Trim, high and low lights
Eyes. Brows threaded. Eye lash tinted and a couple of extensions
Face. Any threading that needs doing, gentle exfoliation, check out make up style for event.
Teeth. Whitening
Body, de fuzz where necessary, exfoliate, fake tan moisture well
Nails. Manicure
Feet pedicure
Diet. Cut out processed carbs and sugar, no alcohol
Increase exercise ( especially if I'm going through a lazy patch _ like now!)
I usually write a list with the times thing need doing and get appointments if needed booked.

Have a great birthday!!

Frexit · 14/08/2019 13:41

I’ll check out SF thanks eaten. Where are you? In States?

OP posts:
Frexit · 14/08/2019 13:46

Wow not. That sounds like serious prep each time Smile. I’m feeling a little overwhelmed with all the ideas so actually a list will probably help me. I’ve got a nails and brows appt sorted and had been thinking about lashes too. Not sure how I’m going to fit work and kids into my upcoming fab at 50 month Grin

Yup Frexit, Arizona. Not even breakfast time yet, but been awake with insomnia again and DH's now up so no point going back to sleep now Smile

notacooldad · 14/08/2019 13:52

Frexit
Just break it down.
Most you can do at home, diet, home exercises, exfoliate etc.
If you need any appointments for say, hair, threading, eye lash tint etc, get the booking in sooner rather than later!! Ive left booking appointments to last minute in the past and got knocked of kilter when they couldnt fit me in

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/08/2019 14:48

What kind of party is it? How formal?

Frexit · 14/08/2019 15:05

Party is drinks reception outside (weather permitting), seated hot buffet, followed by lots of dancing. Originally I had planned to wear a beautiful full length beaded dress but am now saving that for a more formal function later in the year. So I’d say it’s now somewhere between cocktail dresses and ‘black trousers and a nice top’ territory. Venue is an old barn.

Frexit · 14/08/2019 15:09

I like fitted styles usually because although I’m not slim, I do have a decent shape so anything that’s shift style or high necked doesn’t do me any favours Smile

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/08/2019 15:11

Get a Westwood! Over-budget, but sales bargains to be found and you could wear it forever!

Frexit · 14/08/2019 15:11

Ok I shall look! Do they come with sleeves?

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/08/2019 15:15

Yep

Frexit · 14/08/2019 15:16

Ok thanks! Job for this eve. Back to day job now!

OP posts:
Milliy · 14/08/2019 15:41

You will not want to wear polyester once the hot flushes start,I promise you. You will feel like a sausage wrapped in cling film and will be trying to rip it from you.
