Royal style & gossip: Breton stripes and skinny jeans...

Previous thread. I think we'll be a bit short of royal outfits as they're all off on their holidays atm. But Kate's regatta is coming up next week, hence the thread title!

Same rules as always - keep it light, critique the clothes rather than the women, and don't believe anything printed in the Daily Mail Grin

And 'Daphne'.

Laiste · 06/08/2019 13:52

Oh and the 'Arlena' in that powder blue!

Come away Laiste, come away ...

Don’t you think she gets them from Castaner, v Spanish?

Laiste · 06/08/2019 14:16

I was wandering through this link:

www.newmyroyals.com/2019/08/spanish-royals-attended-annual-summer.html

and at the bottom of the photo section it seems to show where Leti's dress and shoes come from Olives.

QueenOfTheAndals · 06/08/2019 14:32

I wish NMR would link to the site where you can find the items!

There's an IG account called royal.addicted which is great and gives credits for clothes.

The other one I follow is Europe.monarchies_

Between them I get my fix of all the style.

Another thing about IG is that if you use the Search and Explore page and go down a few wormholes, you can really come across quite rare pics. Pinterest has the rarest of course, but IG has loads too. I've posted quite a few rare pics on these threads over the past while and they're generally from either Pinterest or IG.

SFF = Silver Fox Felipe, aka the king of Spain

Absolutely agree! :-)

mathanxiety · 07/08/2019 06:15

Presumably King JC of Spain (now abdicated) is keeping a low profile in light of serious scandals and revelations of infidelity. The timing of his abdication coincided with news of financial issues.

GlamGiraffe · 07/08/2019 06:30

Yes, I saw that about the Thai king's miststress too and couldn't quite believe how utterly bizarre it was. And people think the BRF had oddities going on!!

Spudlet · 07/08/2019 07:04

Apparently it used to be that nobody was allowed to touch a member of the Thai royal family for any reason, on pain of death for you and maybe also your whole family. The then king changed that when his pregnant 19 year old queen and 2 year old daughter both drowned when their boat sank, because no one dared touch them to rescue them. Bonkers!

Laiste · 07/08/2019 08:34

spudlet that's a heart breaking story :(

Laiste · 07/08/2019 08:35

The ridiculous practice of deifying ordinary people!

Spudlet · 07/08/2019 08:59

Yes, it’s so sad. There was this whole set of rules about such events that basically said that it was allowable under certain circumstances to use a signal spear to hold out to the royal person and to throw coconuts for them to grab but that if you laid on hands on them to rescue them - and bear in mind that these were the specific rules for sinking royal boats - you would be executed and in some circumstances your whole family would be as well. Absolutely madness, and with completely predictable, utterly tragic consequences.

Spudlet · 07/08/2019 09:01

Chulalongkorn (Rama V, ruled 1868–1910) got rid of public prostrations and reformed rules that made the touching of a royal family member by a commoner and crime punishable by death. Presumably one of the reasons he did this was a tragedy that befell his family. Queen Sunanda Kumariratana, eldest daughter of King Mongkut (Rama IV), was a much loved wife and first queen of King Chulalongkorn. Unfortunately, she died at just 19 years of age, while pregnant, from drowning. The Queen was on her way to Bang Pa-in Summer Palace, on the Chao Praya River, when her boat sank. The old Siamese customs that prevented anyone from touching the queen except for the king made it impossible to save the young queen. Her only daughter, Princess Karnabhorn Bejraratana (nearly 2 years old), died with her.

According to a translation of laws regarding the rescue of a royal person in the Siamese State Ceremonies by H.G. Quaritch-Wales: “If a boat founders, the boatmen must swim away; if they remain near the boat they are to be executed. If the boat founders and the royal person falls into the water and is about to drown, let the boatmen stretch out the signal-spear and throw the coconuts so that he may grasp them if he can. If he cannot, they may let him seize the signal-spear. If they lay hold of him to rescue him, they are to be executed. He who throws the coconuts is to be rewarded with forty ticals of silver and one gold basin. If the barge sinks and someone else sees the coconuts thrown and goes to save rhe royal person, the punishment is double and all his family is to be exterminated. If the barge founders and someone throws the coconuts so that they float towards the shore [away from the royal person], his throat is to be cut and his home confiscated.

Absolute insanity, if true - I’ve no idea how good a source that site is. I was googling to find out about the crawling thing.

AdaColeman · 07/08/2019 09:35

Lèse majesté laws are still in force in Thailand, so it is illegal to criticise the King or close members of the Royal Family, or previous kings.

QueenOfTheAndals · 07/08/2019 09:49

I know Mongkut and Chulalongkorn from the King and I, obviously, but I didn't realise Chulalongkorn married his sister!!

OP posts:
AliasGrape · 07/08/2019 10:02

Those laws are insane spudlet - presume those are the old ones that have now been changed? I’m a bit lost as to what the coconuts are supposed to achieve- like a floatation device?

QueenOfTheAndals · 07/08/2019 10:04

I was reading up on the current Thai king and I think he exemplifies why a hereditary monarchy is not the best idea. We're fairly lucky with HM but imagine if Britain had Salic Law? Then our king would be the boorish Ernst of Hanover!

OP posts:
Spudlet · 07/08/2019 10:06

I guess so! As if it’s not bad enough foundering around in the water without being concussed by flying coconuts thrown by terrified people!

I just can’t fathom the mindset that would lead someone to decide that anyone who tried to save someone from drowning should have their whole family killed - it’s just crazy.

The current Thai king is what you might call a character isn’t he though... you can see how living with that insane level of deference and worship might cause someone to be somewhat unbalanced!

Stravapalava · 07/08/2019 10:07

I love reading about all the "what ifs" like that Queen ! Imagine how different history could have been!

DevonUkelele · 07/08/2019 10:22

StCharlotte
I just think she just never puts a foot wrong. The perfect princess.

QueenOfTheAndals · 07/08/2019 13:50

I think it helps that the media are 100% on her side and don't look for a negative side to every little thing she does, or every cause she espouses.
