Summer raincoat?

Happyelfjokeday · 28/07/2019 20:11

Feels necessary based on these last few days! My winter raincoat is too warm (and black). Just bought one from Next with big flowers on which I was a bit unsure about, and my husband said I looked 70 when I tried it on at home! (Which is double my actual age...!). Nice to have a bit of honesty :)
So has anyone come across a nice lightweight raincoat that is slightly stylish (appreciate raincoats and stylish don’t always go hand in hand...)

I think my issue is maybe I don’t have a very ‘fun’ style, so lots of prints just don’t seem very me. Just had a look on the Joules website and the only Mac I liked was the plain one, which was out of stock. I could just buy a really boring cheap one I suppose but probably not the most flattering (maybe not a big issue in the rain...?)

Just a plain black cheap pac-a-parka type thing?

Happyelfjokeday · 28/07/2019 20:57

Yeah I guess so. Seems boring that might be best option!

Seasalt?

LightOfAThousandStars · 28/07/2019 23:26

Lighthouse Clothing do some colourful lightweight ones and you can get them off Amazon.

Chochito · 28/07/2019 23:27

And Other Stories had them 3 weeks ago, I haven't been in since (trying not to spend 😳 ).

Haworthia · 28/07/2019 23:56

I need one of these too. I have quite strict criteria:

No quirky prints a la Joules/Boden
Properly lightweight
Arse covering
Parka style, maybe drawstring waist
Doesn’t cost the earth

Haven’t had much luck so far.

Found this one in my further googling last night... might be ok? Will check out those other options mentioned thank you

Mumsnet has a 40% off code for Protected Species www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/3645870-Get-40-off-Protected-Species-coats. I bought the parka last year and love it. Extremely lightweight and totally waterproof.

nothingwittyhere · 29/07/2019 15:50

I have this one in the chalk colour, it's comfortable and fairly smart:

The M&S trench costs are stylish lookibg and light and come with Stormwear fabric.

My sister wore hers during very rainy trips to London and Edinburgh and it didn't get soggy and dried super quickly. The water just skimmed off. They sell these year round but the colours vary according to the season.

happytobemrsg · 29/07/2019 18:07

Just bought a PS commuter! Thanks for the heads up on the discount @fraxion!!

Happyelfjokeday · 29/07/2019 18:11

This is when I start to realise I’m not willing to spend a lot of money on what I class as a ‘summer raincoat’... both protected species and seasalt ones more like what I would pay for a ‘real’/winter raincoat rather than a thin one! Will have a look at m&s... thanks everyone for the ideas!

Ah OP I only splurged because of the 40% off (I saved £80!) & the fact that I don’t have an “in between coat” - only a thick winter one! I have young DC so lots of pushing buggies the rain getting hot & bothered But it’s definitely not a must to get an expensive one!

fraxion · 29/07/2019 18:28

Hope you love it as much as I love my parka @happytobemrsg! I wear mine in the winter too with a sweater underneath, absolutely well worth the money for me. Had to talk myself out of buying another one as I have far too many coats Grin.

LambChopsMcGee · 29/07/2019 19:02

I have a pale pink one from Uniqlo. Have a look at their blocktech coats

Happyelfjokeday · 29/07/2019 19:06

Think it’s because the ‘hideous’ one I bought yesterday was £30 so can’t reconcile spending over £100! It’s warped my sense of how much to spend. Never mind... I will find something! I’ve just ordered that Dorothy Perkins one so hopefully that doesn’t look too bad... will see. Weather looking rainy for next two weeks so it will get some use if I can find one I like! Glad others have found one too :)

Ah I like the Blocktexh parka! That will be my backup if this one I’ve ordered doesn’t look nice

Most of these are too warm for summer though. I've got a Joules cotton one, but would definitely have been far too hot in it in yesterday's rain - it was still about 20 degrees. I just wore a t-shirt and then a parka/cagoule thing.

thisenglishlife · 29/07/2019 19:57

The M&S ones are £45 but they do go in the sale for about £30.
