What watch could be described as 'classy' please?

I'd like to treat myself to a grown up watch and be a bit more stylish. It's to wear to work (full time office job). I can't find anything I'd describe as 'classy'. Please can anyone offer me some inspiration?

I have two stainless steel Longines watches, both bought for significant anniversaries with DH getting the man’s version.
Never tire of them.
I wear the battery operated one (£350 IIRC) on a daily basis and the Dolce Vita (£1,000+) for best.
We’re looking at Cartier tanks (£££) for our 25th.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 23/07/2019 15:09

I think that if you are going to spend £££ on a watch, it ought to be mechanical or automatic movement, not quartz that you could get in a cheapy watch for a fraction of the price. Too many people buy watches based on the case and not the skill employed by the watchmaker.

I like the Rolex Datejust 31.

Hoping DH is feeling generous around my birthday

teta · 23/07/2019 15:30

Cartier tank.

Longine do some really lovely very understated watches. Much nicer than some more expensive ‘noticeable’ ones sometimes.

XingMing · 23/07/2019 17:29

I have a Longines, bought 20 years ago when Dubai was the cheapest duty-free in the world. Also a Christopher Ward (online only and now men's only) homage to the Hermes Cape Cod, double tour leather strap (perhaps my favourite), a black on black cheapie with Arabic face and numerals, and a Christopher Ward ladies chronometer with a black face and Matisse style numerals. This is also a look alike, for a make, beginning with B, I don't recall but very swanky five-figure priced watches.

bebeboeuf · 23/07/2019 17:48

Longines are lovely.
Some are a homage to the tank and some are quite individual in their own right.

They have released a new moon phase last year but in yet to see it in person.

bebeboeuf · 23/07/2019 17:49

Christoper ward although men’s only now do have some mid sized watches that would suit someone looking for a quality piece with a decent mechanical movement.

Wavyheaded · 23/07/2019 18:16

Forgot to add - Nordgreen also do beautiful Scandinavian-style watches, I'd say they are not cheap but mid-priced. Hoping to treat myself to one on my birthday!

Greyworm · 23/07/2019 18:51

Mondaine. Understated and elegant. And Swiss.

bebeboeuf · 23/07/2019 19:03

ive always wondered what the difference between the cartier tank solo and tank francais is. The price difference between the two is massive.

Also - the Longines Dolce Vita is so similar, even down to the blue hands. Is there a huge quality difference as its about half the price?

Somersetlady · 23/07/2019 19:06

Cartier Tank is my favourite or something similar!

merlotqueen · 23/07/2019 19:09

I have a silver rotary watch, feels simple and classy

I like this

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 23/07/2019 20:07

My DH has a Longines - it costs a fuck ton of money every time the battery needs changing and the back has to be resealed!

NeverTalksToStrangers · 23/07/2019 20:13

I got a beautiful watch recently after years of not getting the point of them. Not expensive but super classy, not at all gaudy, but striking on my wrist. Love it.

Mine. I love it.

troppibambini · 23/07/2019 21:10

I have a Cartier tank which I think is classic.

Outsomnia · 23/07/2019 21:16

Longines here. Special birthday gift. Gorgeous.

cortex10 · 23/07/2019 21:25

Cartier panthere

FlorenceLyons · 23/07/2019 21:26

Another vote for Mondaine. I have the classic silver one with a black strap, and also a more unusual gold one with a brown strap. Love them.

Fridaysgirl · 23/07/2019 21:34

I agree with many of previous posts.
As an avid watch collector wearer I'd add Raymond Weil to the list. Also reasonably priced now.
One of my favourite watches is in fact a plain men's watch with a leather strap. Very classy.

Jsmith99 · 23/07/2019 21:37

If I were looking for a ‘classy’ watch, I would definitely steer clear of ‘fashion’ brands, eg Gucci, Calvin Klein. ‘Proper’ watch brands, eg Seiko, Tissot are much classier.

Mechanical watches are definitely classier than quartz and, at the top end, stainless steel Rolexes are generally more highly sought after then gold or jewelled ones.

My everyday watch is an Oris Aquis 39mm. It’s a men’s diver style watch with a steel bracelet, quite similar to a Rolex Submariner. Swiss made, mechanical movement and has sapphire crystals front and back. I think it’s quite classy, but others may disagree Grin.

Jsmith99 · 23/07/2019 21:38

I have a large, very plain Mondaine, too. Love it.

soulrunner · 23/07/2019 21:39

I've had my Omega Constellation for 12 years and wear it every day (I'm a one watch woman). However, I also had a Citizen for ages and agree that while they're definitely "high street" price, they are good looking and good quality- nice, understated watches.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 23/07/2019 21:41

Cartier tank
Rolex datejust
Omega

If you're looking for something a bit different then look at Rado, classy and a high end watch, just not as we'll known as the 3 above
