I've lost count of how many threads we've had! Previous thread.

Let's keep the gossip lighthearted and, as always, stick to critiquing the clothes rather than being overly critical about the women wearing them.

Going back to dog whistle racism (never heard that before but makes so much sense!). Eg 'Do people like you eat normal chicken?' when you ask 'what do you mean people like me' they suddenly say 'oh people that have travelled a lot'. Or quote from my FIL 'felt a bit risky driving through x area earlier with all the darkies about, not you, you're different, almost like one of us'. Then people go all wide eyed when you say 'that's racism'. They didn't mean any harm after all.

SlipperOrchid · 20/07/2019 18:40

I don’t think Johnny Spencer and William look alike. I often look at photos of William and think his expressions are very like Diana’s were though especially when he looks up with his head bowed.

MotherofPearl · 20/07/2019 18:46

That's horrific Tipsey. It's really quite blatant racism. Your FIL sounds charming. Hmm

I'm white but not born in the UK. About 10 years ago I got citizenship and had to attend the citizenship ceremony. Afterwards we were mingling (it's a group ceremony) and the lord lieutenant (who had presided over it all) asked where I was from. I told her. She then asked DP who is from Yorkshire and said so. 'Ah, a true Brit then', she said. Just moments before I'd been swearing allegiance to HMQ and being told I was now a citizen. Beggars belief!

Not that I'm comparing that to racism, obviously. I'm still afforded white privilege, but it gave me a tiny glimpse of that awful, tiny minded, insular mentality.

Sorry to derail.

I like Charlene’s dress, but it looks a foot too long.
Poor Jacques looks exhausted. Why would you take such a little boy to an evening do?

What an awesome picture; the Royals meeting Neil Armstrong.
I’m assuming he’s bending down to shake a Edwards’s hand and not bowing!

The thing about racism is it is fear of difference. Anti Semitic feelings, anti English from Scots, Southerners versus Northerners in Britain. It’s only recently that terms like Dago went out of use. People just fear the other, especially if they aren’t very well travelled or cultured.
It isn’t just about black versus white. The upper class fear the working class, the Catholic fears the Protestant , etc. Racism is really just fear and ignorance.I don’t think it’s about superiority most of the time.

mathanxiety · 20/07/2019 19:13

William is all Saxe Coburg Gotha from the tip of the nose up but he has a look of his great grandfather Albert Spencer (aka Jack), the seventh Earl Spencer, in his lower face and mouth.

I sincerely hope he will grow a beard. He is going to look like Humpty Dumpty otherwise as he grows older and more jowly.

QueenOfTheAndals · 20/07/2019 19:20

The other things you've described there are bigotry @Honeysuckleandroses, not racism.

OP posts:
mathanxiety · 20/07/2019 19:21

Some of the antipathy toward others is based on actual experience of oppression, Honeysuckleandroses. Some fears of others as a class are completely legitimate and are rooted in experience, not ignorance.

Racism is the feeling of a dominant class toward a class they have traditionally oppressed. It's the feeling of individual members of that class toward individual members of the oppressed class too. It can be expressed in many ways including refusal to acknowledge inbuilt advantages and disadvantages related to institutional racism in society.

QueenOfTheAndals · 20/07/2019 19:22

@mathanxiety the little girl in the first photo is Diana's aunt, who is still alive at nearly 100!

Agree, QueenOfTheAndals

The oppression I mentioned is based on concepts of racial hierarchy.

This is now not a very exciting comment... I’ve just seen a thread about skincare and it’s way more detail than I expected! Do you all bother with a routine and does it really work? Does Vaseline actually do anything or should I jump to Botox?

Making this somehow royal as reckon most of them use some form of Botox and fillers :) Or I could buy a tiara to make some version of the Croydon facelift... the Windsor facelift :)

Random thought... do you wonder how close the four royal children are? (Charles and his siblings) They’re quite different ages. Also the idea of technically working with family... or a family firm at least... quite intense (and for ever!)

QueenOfTheAndals · 20/07/2019 19:50

I think most of them use Botox and/or fillers and that isn't meant to be a slight. I can't blame them, given the level of scrutiny their appearances come under.

OMG that's inspired!

You’d need diamonds enough for the pull back factor....

Also strings of pearls to hide my neck! :)

GotToGoMyOwnWay · 20/07/2019 20:16

I often wonder too @Notmyrealname855 as to how close they all are. Just because you are siblings doesn’t mean you have to get on - as most of us know from some of threads on here.

TipseyTorvey · 20/07/2019 20:40

Notmyrealname I do think serious attention to skincare does make a difference. A couple of years ago I decided to get serious and researched like a mad thing all things acid and retinoids and skincare. I spent a silly amount at first but advised by lovely people on MN and reddit have worked out a fab routine from the ordinary, Paula's choice, cerave etc and I haven't had a single black head, pimple or rough skin episode since. I rarely leave the house without factor 50 on etc. I am eyeing up botox but a bit wary as don't want a surprised face so need to find the right place. Point being I think all the rf have 'stuff' done but oh so subtly...apart from Anne, love her, don't think she gives two hoots 😂

QueenOfTheAndals · 20/07/2019 20:41

I always imagined that Charles and Anne were close, given they're only a couple of years apart but I guess they aren't that close to their younger brothers. And are Andrew and Edward close to each other? I've not seen them out and about together much.

Oh and no, I don't think vaseline is the way to go. If you want oils go for rosehip oil or almond oil. Vaseline is great once you're really really moisturised and want to lock that in but it's an occlusive so might cause blockages and then spots for many.

Wetdogloveshubert · 20/07/2019 21:46

@TipseyTorvey do share! I'm a lazy so-and-so but don't want to end up with old lady skin! Every so often I have a stab at a routine, but don't give it enough effort and lose interest. I'd love to have better skin.
