Would it bother you if your doctor was wearing shoes like these?

I love them, but can't really justify them unless I wear them for work, at least sometimes. They have loads of styles - some are definitely innappropriate but wondered if some would be ok. Rest of outfit is usually colourful but fairly smart/ conservative.

So I went to work this morning (GP) in my snakeskin Birkenstock’s with painted toenails (pink- shock horror!) and chuckled as I remembered this thread and wondered how many of my patients noticed my footwear today 😂

headlock · 17/07/2019 22:39

I wouldn't mind that at all! Watched a documentary once and the lady GP had pink hair.Smile
I think a fun/modern element like this makes a doctor more approachable.

EL8888 · 17/07/2019 22:40

I love them! Go for it

Mummyandpsycho · 17/07/2019 22:43

A lot of the drs I see at hospital wear similar. One wears irregular choice heels and we always chat about them. Wear them. I always find myself looking at the ground due to my anxiety and if I saw those they would make me smile and actually talk lol

Stopyourhavering64 · 17/07/2019 22:46

Consultant oncologist I work with wears Birkenstocks and nicely pedicured toes...I have absolutely no problem with this just wish I was allowed to wear them for work too

LaMarschallin · 17/07/2019 22:47

YANBU
Bad taste doesn't make you a bad doctor.

keffie12 · 17/07/2019 23:18

It most certainly wouldnt! I would think my Dr was rathern quirky and interesting wearing them. Then I dress quirky and unusual and I would happily wears them shoes too

keffie12 · 17/07/2019 23:18

Should say those shoes above not them shoes!

ShadowOnTheSun · 17/07/2019 23:32

No, it wouldn't bother me at all. Love myself a bit of wacky. Only two things would bother me (re doc's appearance): if he/she would be unhygienic (dirty nails, smelly, dirty hair, etc) OR vulgar/super sexy/stripper-y attire (never seen one like that in a hospital, though). The rest is fine.

As for wearing these shoes and giving bad news. My daughter was hospitalized when she was very little and I was told by doctors she will die (luckily and miraculously she's alive and well now!). Frankly, I don't even remember if the doctor was male or female, he/she could have been naked or could have had two heads instead of one, I was in such a state that I don't remember anything about doctor's appearance at all. So even if he/she would have been wearing smiley shoes - I wouldn't have noticed. But I realize people are different, though.

They’re not at all my style but a doctor wearing them wouldn’t bother me. I’d think “ooh quirky!” and then move on.

Loopytiles · 17/07/2019 23:34

For me it would depend on your specialty! I would usually like loud clothing but would be bothered by these if receiving bad news.

FairyFlake45 · 17/07/2019 23:50

If you’re a good GP, I’d just be happy to be able to actually get an appointment with you! Don’t care what you’re wearing on your feet as long as you know your stuff!

FairyFlake45 · 17/07/2019 23:54

Also, not sure why you have to “justify” buying them. They’re not particularly expensive, especially for someone on a Doctor’s wage?

GibbonLover · 18/07/2019 00:07

Maybe it's not about the money. Lots of people are trying to reduce the amount of new items they buy. If OP is doing the same, she'll want to be sure that she will get plenty of use out of the shoes. Perhaps she has too many pairs of 'going out' shoes as it is and doesn't really need another pair.

Sunflower20 · 18/07/2019 00:19

Not totally unprofessional but not very smart. I wouldn’t judge a doctor based on this though.

wafflyversatile · 18/07/2019 00:28

Interesting that those who disapprove say they would be disrespectful during bad news while those who have recounted traumatic events didnt care or welcomed more chatworthy fashion.

I wouldnt mind in the slightest. I've seen these before and like them.

I think there is a difference between being childish which is a criticism and channelling our inner child. Why should we put aside these things just because were over a certain age. Also, I'm sure we've all dealt with childish bratty immature unprofessional untrustworthy people presenting in smart suits. It's not the clothes that make you good at your job. Weird to think people would apportion authority on the basis of clothes over the actual service given.

ElizaPancakes · 18/07/2019 01:06

I wouldn't be bothered as I trust the doc to know her stuff; I would think what on earth possessed her to buy such fugly toddler shoes.

In general I don't really notice what is on a person's feet but those are made to be noticed.

ElleMac44 · 18/07/2019 01:58

Life is too short to be worrying what my GP wears, as long as she's comfy and happy it wouldn't bother me at all. My GP is fab, I couldn't care less if she wore a bin liner.

HeckingHeckHeck · 18/07/2019 06:44

I would love to see a GP wearing these!

Personally, I’d rather have someone feeling entirely comfortable in how they present themselves (not constrained by antiquated ideas of ‘professional dress’); people who are comfortable and happy are better able to focus. If a professional person actively makes themselves feel uncomfortable (either physically or in their style of dress) just to appease other people’s preconceptions surely they’re likely to be more focused on their clothing, not less?

damnson · 18/07/2019 06:46

Couldn't care less

thecatsabsentcojones · 18/07/2019 06:51

My husband wears crocs at work, the reason hospital doctors wear crocs is they are easily sluiced when bodily fluids spill all over them. That's a foul thought, so if you're the type of doctor who won't suffer the results of a flying bit of blood then shout it loud with these shoes.

Can I just add add crocs are standard NHS uniform along with the blues, no purchase of these hideous items have been made by us.

Lawnmowingsucks · 18/07/2019 07:00

As long as you don't judge me for not wanting to tell your receptionist my health issue and as long as you don't avoid triaging me because I haven't told said receptionist my health problem - then I won't judge you for wearing a little girls' shoe to work HmmWink

Chociefish · 18/07/2019 07:16

Wouldn't bother me but then I already have 4 pairs😂

SpanishTiles · 18/07/2019 07:42

Would you be wearing them to raise money for charity?

TinyTear · 18/07/2019 08:20

It bothers me more to see people in HUGE heels that look terribly uncomfortable and you can't run in them
